Achievements and Performance
SORP reference
2023 was another ambitious and very successful year for &Piano, building on the work we have delivered in previous years since our beginning in Summary of the main 2018. Para 1.20 achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the This year we held 9 events featuring 19 professional charity’s work has made to performers. 3 events featuring 19 participants, and a the circumstances of its digital version of our Young Musician Showcase. We beneficiaries and any wider held our 2[nd] School Recital tour, visiting 6 schools and engaging with over 1000 secondary school benefits to society as a students. whole. We have achieved a lot over the course of the year, so here is a short summary:
- Established a partnership with Huddersfield Literature Festival and delivered an innovative song recital in March as part of their series of events, featuring songs that used words and poems around the theme of music, performed by two exciting young rising classical sings William Kyle & Georgie Malcolm.
‘ This event stood out to us in the HLF brochure and it was really worth the trip over from Sheffield to come. We’ll be telling our friends about &Piano and we’ll definitely be coming back.’ (Feedback from our HLF Music for a While event)
- Presented a new cabaret style classicalmusic-taster evening as a precursor to our 2023 Festival, thanks to the support of Dark Woods Coffee allowing us to use their venue as a performance space.
‘A fantastic evening of wonderful music! The performers really wanted to share their musical passion with their audience. A real treat in a great venue. We are so lucky to have &Piano in our community! Thank you!’ (Feedback from our ((LISTEN)) Dark Woods Event)
-
Successfully bid for an Arts Council England grant to support our 2023 Festival. This meant that our 2023 was our biggest festival to date:
-
Featuring 17 professional musicians, including West End actress Emma Williams, instrumental ensemble ‘Avenue Ensemble’ and pianist Jonathan Fisher. Most of our performers were based in and perform around Yorkshire and Greater Manchester.
-
oAudience attendance of around 400 over all our paid events and reached 150 people through our pop-up performances around Kirklees & Calderdale. -
Invited 8 Young Musicians to perform in our Young Musician Showcase, accompanied by pianist Jane Robertson. We also introduced a new event – an open-mic classical night we called ‘Performance Pub’ which invited local performers from all backgrounds and experiences the opportunity to perform as part of the festival in a supportive and welcoming environment.
“A fantastic and thoughtful event, you created a safe space where everyone who performed felt valued and equal - not an easy thing to do!” (Performer feedback from our Performance Pub event)
Performed to around 1000 secondary students around Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Halifax during our 2nd School Recital Tour, which was once again gratefully supported by funding from the Liz & Terry Bramall Foundation.
“Was a very interesting performance workshop, I really liked how the performers interacted with the students between each of the pieces of music. Students were engaged and answering questions about the pieces as well as asking questions of their own. I thought the workshop was very informative and it showcased that classical music is accessible for everyone no matter what your background is. I received a lot of positive feedback about the workshop from both students and members of staff. Students loved the fish song! (Laura Taylor, Music Teacher at The Brooksbank School, Elland, Halifax)

| Review of the charity’s financial position at the end of the period |
Para 1.21 | We finished the year in a financially similar position to how we finished 2022 – holding just under £1000 and no outstanding debts. Our financial report this year showed a deficit spend, but that was due to outstanding funds remaining from our Liz & Terry Bramall Foundation funding reported in 2022, which were ring-fenced to be used for this year’s 2023 School Tour. The charity is starting to think about how we can develop a bit more financial certainty and security as an organisation, to help us be able to plan better and with more certainty. Currently we can only go ahead with our plans dependent on if we are successful with funding, and this makes for a very hand-to-mouth delivery approach with very little margin for error in our planning. This year we made our first application to Arts Council England for National Lottery Project Funding to help support our 2023 festival, and were delighted to be successful in our request, allowing us to further enhance the quality and delivery of the festival, and engage some external marketing support. We hope that this will mark the start of a positive and fruitful relationship with ACE to help us support our work bringing classical music to the region around Huddersfield and Halifax, educating listeners and audiences about the genre and the repertoire, and supporting professional musicians with a connection to the North of England. There has been a shift in roles within our trustees, with Heidi Johnson becoming our new Chair, and Peter agreeing to take on the role of treasurer. Peter has a great deal of business management experience, and his support in this new role has already been invaluable in terms of drafting up budget plans and end of year accounts. We have also managed to resolve our Gift Aid issue by officially changing our charitable working name to ‘AndPiano’, and this meant we were able to claim two years worth of gift aid to support our 2023 Festival. |
| Statement explaining the policy for holding reserves stating why they are held |
Para 1.22 | The trustees of the charity agreed that a minimum reserve of £1500 should be held by the charity. This amount helps us to begin planning for the following year’s festival and from our annual financial history, with no recurring overheads, appears to be an acceptable amount to hold. |
