|Summary of the main<br>achievements of the charity,<br>identifying the difference the<br>charity’s work has made to<br>the circumstances of its<br>beneficiaries and any wider<br>benefits to society as a<br>whole.|Para 1.20|2022 has been a busy and successful year for &Piano,<br>with a couple of significant achievements to<br>acknowledge.<br>At the start of the year, we were delighted to find out<br>that we had been successful in our bid to the Liz &<br>Terry Bramall Foundation to fund an education tour<br>around secondary schools around Huddersfield and<br>Halifax, to promote and inform students about<br>classical music, and encourage them to explore<br>Classical music as part of their listening habits.<br>We delivered a 3-day pilot in July, visiting 3 schools in<br>Kirklees, and 2 in Calderdale with a violinist and a<br>mezzo-soprano, performing to about 500 students<br>overall. The feedback and reaction was interesting<br>and fantastic. Students enjoyed an opportunity to<br>engage directly with live music and musicians<br>passionate about the music they perform. The<br>performances included music by Rossini, Rebecca<br>Clarke, Strauss, Brahms and Gershwin. They also had<br>the opportunity to ask questions about life as a<br>professional musician.<br>At one school, one of the teachers pointed out to us<br>that one of their most difficult students was one of<br>the most intrigued and engaged during the<br>workshop, and teachers appreciated how engaging<br>the performers were with the students.<br>_"Very professional and engaging for the students._<br>_The musicians were fantastic and were very_<br>_approachable. We had a range of year_<br>_groups from 6th form to Y7s and they all got_<br>_involved.” Teacher, Brighouse High School_<br>The tour was a great success, and we are delighted<br>that we have funding remaining to be able to deliver<br>another tour next year, and hope that we can source<br>additional funding to make this an annual project for<br>us to help young people have better opportunities to<br>connect with classical music.<br>Encouraged by the success of our ‘Travels to the Sea’<br>concert in Autumn 2021, we went ahead planning<br>our first full in-person festival since 2019. We were<br>back to our traditional format of a one-event per<br>weekend, three weekend festival format - although<br>the middle weekend was slightly busier, with our<br>vocal event on Friday evening followed by a busy day<br>on Saturday with our Family Event in the morning,<br>Relaxed Performance in the afternoon and our first<br>live Young Musician Showcase in the evening. It was<br>a fantastic feeling to have two packed days of live|

musical activity happening, with something for every age and background happening in Slaithwaite. Continuing our remit to showcase talented performers of a high standard with a connection to the North of England, we were delighted to welcome two fantastic musical theatre artists from the North West. We also featured our first ‘trio performance’ in our instrumental showcase, welcoming Hallé Principal No.2 Cellist Simon Turner - based in Slaithwaite, to perform together with clarinetist Rae Todd. This was a fantastic opportunity for Rae, at the start of his professional career to work and perform alongside Simon and Chris, with a wealth of orchestral and chamber experience, and what we hope &Piano will build on in the future, offering musicians at different stages of their career and development the opportunity to develop, and for audiences to see that collaboration happen. _“You’re all so passionate about the music – the way that you introduce and talk about it all. It’s so inspiring to watch and experience so close to the performers and I will definitely come back to another event” Audience feedback_ Despite uncertainty regarding audience confidence since the pandemic, we were delighted to welcome back audience numbers equivalent to our pre-pandemic events. Around 300 people attended our six 2022 events, and we provided paid opportunities to 10 professional musicians, all of whom live, work or have studied across the North of England. We also held our very first live Young Musician Showcase event as part of the festival, which featured 8 performers, who between them were studying at Greenhead College, Huddersfield New College & University of Huddersfield. This opportunity allowed them the chance to perform a roughly 10 minute recital each. All of them relished the performance opportunity, accompanied by Artistic Director Chris Pulleyn who worked with them on their pieces, as well as the opportunity to watch and connect with other young musicians. We’re delighted that &Piano is able to offer talented young musicians an opportunity to build their confidence performing chamber and song repertoire, while also promoting more performance of this repertoire within Huddersfield. We hope that we can build on events like this, and our Schools Tour to help music making and music appreciation flourish around West Yorkshire.

|Review of the charity’s<br>financial position at the end<br>of the period|Para 1.21|At the end of 2022, &Piano finished it’s<br>financial year with its most significant<br>amount of surplus since it’s founding as a<br>charity. This is largely due to restricted<br>funds outstanding from the Liz & Terry<br>Bramall foundation, and is ring-fenced<br>towards another Schools Tour for next<br>year’s festival.<br>Unrestricted funding is £900 - slightly below<br>trustees agreed reserves level of £1500, but<br>with no outstanding or regular financial<br>commitments or debts, and just below the<br>reserve level, it is an acceptable amount to<br>be holding and is enough of a foundation to<br>support next year’s festival events.<br>Towards the end of the financial year, we<br>submitted our first application to Arts<br>Council England, and another application to<br>Kirklees’ One Community Trust, who have<br>supported us in the past. This is our first<br>application to ACE, and with incredible<br>demand for funding across the arts industry,<br>we must not hold our hopes up that we will<br>be successful, especially with it being our<br>first application. That being said, our<br>request is modest, and we are confident<br>that our application is strong.<br>Should we be successful in our applications,<br>it will enable us to make next year’s festival<br>our biggest and most ambitious yet. We<br>have a contingency plan for a smaller and<br>more modest series of events should we be<br>unsuccessful in our applications, to ensure<br>that we stay within budget.<br>We have been having great difficulty<br>claiming our Gift Aid back on donations. We<br>suspect that it is a result of the ‘&’ symbol at<br>the start of our name, and so we are looking<br>to officially amend our official title to spell<br>out ‘And’ in the hope that it does not affect<br>computer systems and will allow us to<br>submit our Gift Aid claims successfully as<br>we now have a significant amount of<br>donations to claim back for.|
