&Piano produces concerts and events featuring professional, skilled musicians, to promote live music of a high standard, and encourage more engagement with live music in and around Huddersfield, in West Yorkshire where we are based. We charge low ticket prices to ensure that our events are accessible and approachable as possible. We pay our performers fairly, and try where possible to employ artists with a connection to the local region (be it that they studied nearby, live nearby or are originally from the region), helping to celebrate homegrown talent and support our regional creative economy. We offer some of our performances online for free, to encourage wide access and engagement with our work. |

Achievements and Performance

|---|---|---|
Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole.
Para 1.20 | Despite 2021 starting off as another challenging year amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, with a full national lockdown at the start of the year, &Piano has once again had a satisfyingly productive and fruitful year of activity. Over the course of the year we were able to deliver: • 5 events throughout the year, providing opportunities to • engage 5 professional musicians and around 20 young musicians still in education to perform, (either in an online performance, or live). • We presented our 2ndYoung Musician Showcase – in a digital format but with in-person performances, featuring 10 talented young musicians from across Kirklees and Calderdale. • Produced a series of professionally made digital ‘Town Hall Session’ video performances, filmed in Huddersfield Town Hall thank to support from a grant awarded by One Community Fund and support from Kirklees Council. |
• Partnered with Greenhead 6thForm
---
College to be able to offer a
performance masterclass to Music
students with Opera North Principal
trumpet player Murray Grieg in
September.
• Made our return to live music
making with an afternoon
performance on November 21st –
‘Travels to the Sea’, performing
Vaughan-Williams ‘Songs of Travel’
and Elgar’s ‘Sea Pictures’ in a new
venue for &Piano - at St Paul’s
Church, Armitage Bridge in the
Holme Valley in Huddersfield.
Thanks to the successful application of a
grant from the Judith and Neil Charlesworth
Fund, this enabled us to produce a series
of digital videos for audience over the
course of the year, and as soon as
restrictions were lifted, we were able to
seize the opportunity by organising our 2nd
Young Musician Showcase, after the
success of the first.
We did this in a slightly different format to
last year, and were able to film in-person
performances of all the young musicians.
This was an invaluable performance
opportunity for all participants – for some, it
was the first chance they had had to
perform with another musician for over a
year.
The video was released in May, and was
once again very popular and well-received.
Since it’s released in May it has received
over 500 views on both our YouTube and
Facebook channels.
“Wonderful performances. Well done and
thank you AndPiano”
“Just caught up with this, what a lovely
showcase! Thank you”
“A brilliant concert! Well done to all
involved. And thank you for giving Holly the
opportunity to take part!”
Shortly after the release of our Young
Musician Showcase, we set out recording a
pair of short performances in Huddersfield
Town Hall – a series we called ‘Town Hall
Sessions’. The support from the Judith and
Neil Charlesworth Fund allowed us to have
these professionally filmed, creating two short recitals for audiences anywhere to enjoy during a time when restrictions on public performances were in place. It gave us the opportunity to promote our anticipated next in-person festival, providing paid performances opportunities for the musicians involved, and an opportunity to showcase the Huddersfield Town Hall – a local landmark which had been unused as a performance space. “I found it quite moving to watch you both performing in a completely empty hall.” “Our [Huddersfield New College] Musical Theatre students all watched this - they’ll have to record a performance just of themselves with a backing for assessment, so this is great for them to learn from.” As the country continued to open up, and evidence showed that the vaccine roll-out was successful in reducing the risk of COVID-19, we had the opportunity to work in person again. We worked with Greenhead College to support their music students build their confidence as performers by organising a masterclass with renowned trumpet player Murray Grieg, followed by an informal evening concert giving all students the opportunity to perform live again. And in November, we were able to arrange an in-person live ‘fringe’ event: “Travels to the Sea”, an afternoon concert on November 21[st] at St Paul’s Church in Armitage Bridge over the valley from Slaithwaite. We programmed two popular English song-cycles, featuring two familiar singers based in Huddersfield, Thom Meredith and Sarah Ogden, who both performed at the inaugural festival back in 2018. Unsure of how audiences would feel about attending amidst an ongoing pandemic, we were delighted to receive a near-capacity audience at the church, with some fantastic feedback. “I heard from the 3 doctors from Norfolk who had come for the [Huddersfield] Contemporary Music Festival and because I told them about the &Piano concert, came to it. They thoroughly enjoyed it and said it was the best thing they had heard in the 4 days they were there.”
“Just a quick email to say how much my mum and I enjoyed the performance on Sunday. The venue was perfect. It was so lovely to be out and about mixing again! And the joy of listening to such talent, we look forward to coming to your next event.” This in-person concert gave us a much needed confidence boost to head into the new year and continue our plans for our full in-person live festival in May 2022, which we hope will feature our three main events, in addition to other events tailored for new audiences, young children, and our young musician showcase for talented young performers.

Financial Review
| Financial Review | ||
|---|---|---|
Review of the charity’s financial position at the end of the period
Para 1.21 | &Piano finished 2020 with a balance of just under £800, and in 2021, we finished with a slightly larger surplus of just under £1500. The fact that we were able to deliver a healthy amount of work amidst restrictions and the challenges of a pandemic, and slightly build on our previous year’s surplus, we consider to be a strong success. With no regular outgoings, we are in a solid financial position, and with a comfortable level of resources to allow us to plan and prepare for our planned 2022 festival. 2021 resulted in another of small achievements for the charity. We applied for, and were successful in being awarded our first grant, which was invaluable in allowing us to record our digital performances. We also maintained our number of ‘88 Keys supporters’, who choose to donate an amount annually to help support the festival. We were delighted that most of our supporters wanted to continue their support with us, and as we plan future in-person festivals, this support is invaluable, knowing that we have a consistent donation amount annually that we can use to invest in marketing, development, and the various festival costs. Looking forward, our goal as an organisation is to build on our successes and develop the festival to be able to offer more opportunities and events for the communities across the region to experience live music performances. We are working on a couple of grant applications in order to be able to deliver our plans for 2023. |
