## COLLYHURST AND MOSTON BOXING CLUB Registered Charity No 1186370 Income & Expenditure Account for the year ended 31 December 2022 Collyhurst & Moston Boxing Club 31 DECEMBER 2022 CONTENTS ||Page| |---|---| |Trustees' Report|3| |Independent Examiner’s Report|5| |Statement of Financial Activities|6| _2_ Collyhurst & Moston Boxing Club 31 DECEMBER 2022 TRUSTEES' REPORT The Trustees' Management Committee present their report for the year ended 31 December 2022. ## **Trustees** The Trustee members who served on the Management Committee during the year were as follows: Deborah Jump – Trustee and Chair John Daly-Greenham – Trustee Alec Clark – Trustee Gary Millar - Trustee ## **Senior Management** The day-to-day duties are under the management of Martin Roberts and Thomas McDonagh. ## **Objectives and Activities** The promotion of community participation in healthy recreation in particular by the provision of facilities for amateur boxing; - To advance the education of the inhabitants of Collyhurst and Moston, Greater Manchester, and the surrounding areas in such ways as the Charity Trustees think fit, including developing their mental, physical and moral capabilities through leisure time activities; - To provide or assist in the provision of facilities in the interests of social welfare for healthy recreation or other leisure time occupation for individuals residing in Collyhurst and Moston, Greater Manchester, and the surrounding areas who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, financial hardship or social circumstances with the object of improving their quality of life ## **Appointment, Induction and Training of Trustees** All members of the Board of Trustees give their time voluntarily and receive no benefits from the charity. Further trustees will be recruited to fill gaps in experience and knowledge that bring a stated benefit to the charity. ## **Risk Review** The trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed, in particular those relating to the operations and finance of the organisation, and are satisfied that procedures and systems are in place to mitigate the charity's exposure to risks. ## **How the Charity's Activities Deliver Public Benefit** The promotion of community participation, fitness & education by providing amateur boxing facilities. ## **Principal Funding Sources** The main sources of income for the charity in the year are grants and commissions from Children In Need, Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit and Fight for Peace. _3_ Collyhurst & Moston Boxing Club 31 DECEMBER 2022 TRUSTEES' REPORT ## **Financial Review** This year the charity has increased income by 120% as compared with last year and significantly increased funding from all sources. The charity is in a good financial position and is comfortably able to meet its commitments in the future. The prior period has been restated to reclassify part of a loan received as income. ## **Independent Examiners** My Cloud 9 Accounting Limited 3 Hunters Mews, Oakfield, Sale M33 6WA ## **Registered Charity** Charity Number: 1186370 ## **Statement of Trustees' Responsibilities** The Trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the charity trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charity for that period. In preparing the financial statements, the Trustees are required to: - Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; - Observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP; - Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; - State whether applicable UK accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and - Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue to operate. The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. ## **Registered Office** 2 Oscar Street Manchester, M40 9DE On behalf of the Trustees' Management Committee _4_ ## Collyhurst & Moston Boxing Club 31 DECEMBER 2022 TRUSTEES' REPORT This year the charity has been able to grow its provision and now serves more people in the community than ever before, including people from more diverse backgrounds, a broader range of age groups and an increase in female participation. This has been made possible by securing more grant funding which has allowed the delivery of a greater number of boxing and boxing related activities both at Collyhurst and Moston Club itself and in the community. Examples of new provision includes a programme delivered in five local primary schools and a more extensive school holiday programme which includes mentoring and accreditation for young people. The development in provision means the charity has supported over **300** different individuals throughout the year, continuing to strive to have a positive impact on the physical and mental wellbeing of North Manchester residents. Our theory of change is that by improving physical and mental health through our activities and by developing strong relationships with local role model coach/mentor, our beneficiaries will become more open to new opportunities, develop a more positive attitude to life, and be better equipped to make those crucial next-step decisions to thrive in life. Young people will be more aware of risky behaviours, have improved mental wellbeing, have developed interpersonal skills, be more hopeful for the future and be less likely to get (or remain) involved in crime and risk-taking behaviours. We are in the foothills of our journey to improve assessment of programmes impacts. Having invested in Upshot and trialled ways of collecting impact data in our primary schools Training with Champions programme, we are now gradually rolling out similar approaches across all our programmes, including using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale plus individual questionnaires and small focus groups to evidence the impact of our work on for our beneficiaries. Our monitoring and evaluation work is quality assured by one of our trustees who is a Reader in Criminology at Manchester Metropolitan University. Key engagement and impact statistics are as follows: - We engaged over 250 young people a week in 2022, with 80% identifying as male and 20% as female. - Since then, we have increase reach to over 400 young people and shifted the gender balance of our beneficiaries to 28.7% female. - 48.6% of beneficiaries identify as White British and 51.4% identify with a broad range of other ethnicities. - Since 2020, 95% of young people at risk of school exclusion who take part in our programmes have remained in education after our intervention. - 90% of those referred from youth offending services are no longer committing criminal activity. - Following 12 weeks of engagement, 95% felt more confident and 98% felt better about themselves. In August 2022, The Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit awarded funding to CMBC to launch a pilot programme in 5 North Manchester Primary Schools, with the aim of using non-contact boxing and personal development activities to address the above described issues of school exclusions and to reduce the risk of violent crimes in young people. We engaged 140 year 6 and 28 year 5 pupils (53.9% male) in St Malachy’s, MCPA, St Augustine’s, Moston Lane and Saviour primary schools. As a result of taking part in the sessions 72% said that taking part had stopped them getting into trouble, 70% felt more confident, 71% felt good about themselves, 77% felt able to overcome challenges, 78% felt more motivated, 75% felt happy about life and 79% felt able to achieve their own goals. The trustees are satisfied that the charity operates within fit and proper policies and procedures that safeguards all service users, volunteers and sessional staff. The quality assurance and due diligence of the charities activities continue to be scrutinised comprehensively at quarterly trustee meetings and regular correspondence with the delegated management team within the charity. The trustees are satisfied that the charity has robust financial procedures and the financial position is secure. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Charities Act”) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: - examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act, - follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and - state whether particular matters have come to my attention. ## **Basis of independent examiner’s statement** My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below. ## **Independent examiner's statement** In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: 1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements:  to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; and  to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act have not been met; or 2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
