Overview
This year has been another one of growth in terms of opportunities, events, projects undertaken and maintained, the number of volunteers who have joined the team, fund raisers we have hosted alone or with other community groups and financial donations.
The number of guests at the Humphrey Booths Resource Centre has increased and now is at maximum allowed in the venue, The number of guests at the Grand Palais has now returned to pre pandemic levels. This has led to the need of introducing a third venue to enable the charity to reach out to more people who are living with dementia or are isolated, lonely, or depressed. The Trustees are currently in discussion as to the viability of additional venues to reach out to more people in the Greater Manchester area.
Thank you to the Trustees for all the hard work.
Special thanks to
Anne Bellis for her work in arranging all the artists for the events.
Jean Brock for all the admin support.
Elaine Fox for the networking and the Social Media production for the different events.
Jeanette Cutt for her role in the Treasurers role - this role is growing with all the additional events that are planned.
Lesley Fisher for the networking and fund-raising aspect required to maintain the service level we are developing.
Part 2
Social Events at Grand Palais.
The monthly Social Afternoon have continued to gain in numbers. Anne Bellis has continued to attract excellent artists to entertain our guests. As the months progressed so did the number of guests attending and by September 2023, we are back to pre-Pandemic levels. We have introduced a sales table which adds a little extra enjoyment to the event as well as generating funds. Dancing with Dementia are proud to welcome local care homes. The care homes have prebooked tables which allows the guests to be seated promptly and without any delay which may cause stress to the guests.
The artist at the Grand Palais include.

Music and Dance with Dementia events at Humphrey Booths Resource Centre
The events at Humphrey Booth resource Centre have continued to prosper and grow in popularity – so much so we are regularly at capacity and must use firefighting techniques by asking people to sit in the train experience room or weather permitting to sit outside.
Our guests are encouraged to sing and dance the mornings away and to stay for a nutritious lunch cooked in the Forget Me Not Café. This increases the amount of social interaction whilst addressing isolation and loneliness. People who live alone benefit from eating with friends expanding on the therapeutic effect of the morning.
Anne Bellis – Social Secretary has a portfolio of artists to entertain at the weekly events at Music and Dance with Dementia These include:-
Kadie Jo Green, Nick Miller, Daniel Winters, Lareena Mitchell Sheila Diamond Paul Scholey, Martin James, Paul Scholey, and many others.
Another venue has been added to the portfolio. The Boundary Stone Ellenbrook
Based in a local public house this offers a different atmosphere to our guests to create additional experiences to enhance their memories.
The first event attracted 37 guests and we offered a choice of menu, and we were entertained by a professional artist. We asked our guests what we could do better, they suggested that the meal could be a simpler version of soup, sandwiches and chips with a pudding and tea and coffee. This worked well at the second event, and we have decided to use this option to meet our guests’ requirements. By the third event we had 50 guests so we feel this will be a popular event and will grow in popularity. The activities are varied to give a different approach to the entertainment which can include professional artist, community group bands and quizzes and games. The event will open up different entertainment including various types of music from songs from the 60’s, songs from musicals, ukulele and maybe a gospel choir.
Part 3
Festive Giving Programme 2022
Working with Our Hearts Our Community October saw the start of the preparation of the Festive gift boxes for local care homes. Both Teams pooling resources to enable over 300 gift boxes and festive hampers to be delivered to the care homes in the local area. The programme has started again for the Festive Season 2023. This year they number is being raised to 400 gift boxes.
Working with one of the local churches we decorated two festive trees. One with a dementia theme to raise awareness of the condition. The second one was a teddy tree where local crafters created over 200 teddy bears which were distributed to the Dementia Units at Bolton Royal and Salford Royal in the first weeks of 2023. Plans are in place to dress the Dementia Awareness Tree but this year the second tree will be angels in memory of loved ones who are no longer with us.
Part 4
The Salfordian Hotel .
Dancing with Dementia have hosted three weekends away this year. These weekends away are offering inexpensive holidays for people who live alone after losing a loved one and those who are living with dementia and their carer. The DWD Volunteers provide a fun time that is supported by staff at the hotel who are dementia trained. The trustees of the Salfordian would like to work with us to expand on the services that they offer our guests. Working with CVS we hope to access funding that will provide a subsidised holiday for our service users. Let’s get more people enjoying a few days away! Possibilities for day trips out to Southport and having either lunch or afternoon tea at the hotels are being discussed.
Part 5
Days Out
Retail Therapy coach trip to Oswaldtwistle Mill plus a festive meal and a singalong to enhance the day.
Pantomime at Bolton, many thanks to Elaine Fox for donating this last gift in her role as Tesco Community Champion with the proceeds from the book sales.
Chippy Tea at Kingfisher Fish bar on Salford Precinct. Great time was had by all = food was lovely, the music was wonderful and the old photos of Salford displayed on the walls were a great renaissance and conversation starter. Re-kindling memories of Old Salford.
Part 6
Ongoing projects
Purple Angels
Working in partnership with another charity called Purple Angels we are part of the World Rocks Against Dementia Campaign with events being planned to promote awareness of the dementia condition. Purple Angels project is now beginning to take off. We have currently given out 39 MP3 Players to people living with Dementia. Marion Hutchingson has taken over as lead on this project and is networking with local care homes and home care providers to take music out into the community. The numbers of players requested is growing as Marion develops the project.
The Baby Love project is in full force with dolls ready to go to the care homes and hospitals. More than 100 lives touched by those beautifully dressed dolls.
Dementia Wards at Salford Royal and Bolton Royal Hospitals
Working with Dementia Wards at Bolton Royal and Salford Royal we are reaching out to 6 wards altogether reaching approx. 150 people per month. Supporters and Volunteers of DWD have supplied toiletries, combs and brushes, baby dolls, comfort blankets, shoulder shawls, slippers and clothes. (These items are for patients who have no family or friends to help with basic needs) We support the awareness days and events at the hospital by giving dance demonstrations and hosting information stands.
Working with local care homes
The birthday box project is an amazing fete and is being supported by many supporters donating items for the gifts. Over 100 gifts have been given out this year alone.
Artists to entertain the residents. Dancing with Dementia fund the costs of artists to entertain the residents of local care homes and sheltered housing accommodations. This is proving to be very popular. There is an option that we could look into an additional service next year with a therapy artist working with small groups of residents in the care homes and sheltered accommodation facilities.
Dancing with Dementia have contributed to the library at Pendleton Court, supplied crafted items for the new craft shop at Worsley Lodge and provided MP3 Players and baby dolls to Walkden Manor. We have donated craft items to Poppy Day Centre too.
Part 7
AGM.
Dancing with Dementia hosted an AGM at Humphrey Booth Resource Centre. Our supporters and Volunteers were invited and contributed to the session. Lesley Fisher was re-instated as Chairperson and Anne Bellis as Social Secretary. Jeanette Cutt gave an overview of the financial report. Lesley Fisher outlined what had been achieved and discussed plans for progression over the following months. No issues were raised.
Part 8
Fund Raising Events.
Networking with local businesses and working with other community minded people fund raising events were held throughout the year to finance the various projects.
Motown Night
Fashion Show at The Marriot Hotel
Fashion Show at Pink Butterfly Boutique
Craft Fairs at The Boundary Stone.
Shopping night at Pink Butterfly Boutique in Worsley
Tombola in Tesco Walkden.
Craft tables at HBRC
Craft tables at The Grand Palais
Three runners in the Manchester Marathon raised the profile of DWD but also raised over £4000.
Donations received.
There has been an increase in personal donations received. We are humbled that some of these are funeral remembrance donations. One family asked that we hosted a remembrance service as the loved one loved our events so much and we honoured the lady with an afternoon tea and songs from her favourite artist played. A very moving tribute for a loved one.
Part 9
Cost of living advice and support .
The cost-of-living crisis has had a major impact on our guests so if there are any special offers within the local supermarkets DWD promote the information. Promoting other community groups winter warmers for friendship and cost-effective food has been an ongoing project to enhance the social activity and to promote healthy eating whilst being cost effective. Places like The Hive, Age UK, Swinton Salvation Army, and St James and all Souls Church have all been engaged in the Winter Warmers schemes and our guests are invited to share in the offers.
Part 10
Spirit of Salford Awards 22[nd] October 2022
The team at Dancing with Dementia were pleased that they had been nominated as the Community Group of the year. This award is decided upon by public vote. With tough competition Dancing with Dementia are pleased to say that we were awarded the Community Group of the Year Award for 2023. Great celebrations at The AJ Bell Stadium that night.
Part 11
28[th] October DWD became part of CO-OP Community Fund
The team were advised of the Co-op Community fund, and we applied earlier in the year to be part of the scheme. In October we were informed that DWD had been chosen to be part of the scheme. The aim is to encourage Co-op member to choose DWD as their preferred charity and we receive a percentage of the takings on sales of Co-op goods and services. We will learn how much funding we will receive at the end of Oct 2023. This funding is to be utilised on the costs of the artists at The Grand Palais
Part 12
Raising awareness of the dementia condition and raising the profile of Dancing with Dementia
Lesley Fisher gave interviews to
My Generation and CVS
Awareness days at Salford Royal Hospital carers event where we gave dance demonstrations and encouraged dancing and singing to popular songs.
November 2022 Working with student journalists from Salford University making of a video.
We Invented the Weekend.
Dancing with Dementia working with the We Invented the Weekend team and created a fun dance session on the Lowry Plaza It was extremely good fun and ended with a conga round the plaza, even dog walkers joined in with their dogs! A great spectacle!
Conference at Manchester University Lesley Fisher and Jeanette Cutt attended a conference organised by Lancaster University. This was on how exercise can help people with cognitive impairment. Lesley spoke to the students and staff about the programmes we run and the effect of music and dance on the wellbeing of people living with Dementia. The session was successful and there has been interest from two more Universities Edge Hill and Liverpool with an idea of the session being made available to their students based on lived experiences.
Dancing with Dementia were approached and were asked to be stakeholders in a project at The Bridgewater Halls with a production of So Many Beauties To see our logo alongside such groups as Northern College of Music, The Bridgewater Halls, and The Halle is a very wonderful experience. This has prompted Bridgewater Halls inviting our guests to various events. Again, reaching out to people living with dementia with events such as Songs and Scones etc.
The event was an amazing piece of co-creative performing arts for people living with dementia. Working within the community, bringing various groups together and promoting the value of the work each group achieved. Greater networking will enable more people to access supporting events which will benefit the community.
Working with Tesco’s Walkden Community Champion Lucy Jorgenson, Lucy has provided clothes which are to be donated to the hospital wards for patients who have arrived at hospital with little or no additional clothing and have no friends or relatives to supply them with. DWD engage with the patients to ensure they have a comfortable stay in hospital. Lucy also donated various items as raffle prizes which generated income to allow us to carry on the projects we have started.
Dancing with Dementia have been approached to work as part of a team who are working together to share best practice on dementia provision and support. Dancing with Dementia will be part of the group Co-producing A Brighter Future . We are also active members of the Salford Dementia Action group . This interest has led Lesley Fisher to want to offer another service to our guests. We are currently working with people who have been diagnosed and their loved ones and carers. Perhaps we could extend our provision to offer preventative support?
Hosting information stands at St George’s Aspire
Networking with Home Instead
Networking at RHS Bridgewater Gardens at the dementia awareness ceremony.
Part 13
Supporting Research into the dementia condition.
Each dementia journey is different as we know but how/ why does it start? Research has shown that isolation, loneliness, depression, being overweight and having an under active lifestyles can have influence of the condition. If we can offer our support to help the people who fall into these categories, then maybe we can help to prevent dementia taking a hold. Lesley Fisher has meeting planned with Salford University Dementia Department in the next few weeks to plan to work together on various project to promote the development of various research topics.

Part 15
Dancing with Dementia
Moving forward 23/24
It is difficult to really comprehend how DWD has grown and how our provision for people living with dementia has had such an impact on the local community. Sometimes we just accept what we do as normal but when we look at what we are achieving it is jaw dropping.
We have continued to host the DWD at The Grand Palais attracting more than 100 guests each month.
Music and Dance with Dementia at HBRC are meeting maximum numbers – between 75 and 80 people each week.
The new project at The Boundary Stone reaching out to people in a different part of Salford, 37 people attended the first event and these number have continued to grow. This type of provision is so needed.
We must have a service user base of more than 400 people!
It is possible that we can help reduce the factors that start dementia and to be part of a preventative measure as well as the supporting role we do now.
There is an option to work more closely with Aspire and to create two more Music and Dance with Dementia sessions in two different venues. This is to open up the support to new service users. Spreading further into Greater Manchester there is the possibility of working with a community hub in Atherton. Discussion on viability and cost effectiveness of these projects will need further discussion and grant application to fund the expansion programme.
Dancing with Dementia is planning to start programmes that are designed to help people create a healthy lifestyle that may prevent the onset of the dementia condition.
We are excited about the future. New beginnings working with other groups, agencies, and health professionals. Reaching out to more people in the community who are isolated, lonely, or depressed. Raising awareness of the dementia condition and creating havens where our guests can feel comfortable, supported and respected. Dancing with Dementia strive to prolong and enhance the lives of our service users by treating them with dignity and creating a feeling of wellbeing.
