Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 To preserve and protect the health and safety of
the public from the dangers of coercive
control and stalking and to bring about
lasting improvements in the management of
perpetrators and the protection of victims
specifically by:
(1) raising public awareness;
(2) ensuring that relevant legislation is effec-
tive and adhered to, and in particular
ensuring that stalking offences result in
immediate action both to protect the
victim and to deal effectively with the per-
petrator. The Trust will achieve this by, for
example, providing education and training
for police, military and other relevant
agencies;
(3) campaigning for improved legal measures
relating to stalking and related offences;
and
(4) supporting research into ways to improve
the protection of victims of stalking and
the management of perpetrators.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
Across the course of 2023 the Trust developed a
new strategy that accurately articulates our
purpose and vision. Our activities now sit under
three themes that enable us to carry our mission
of to foster generations of young people who
understand stalking, the potential risks of
stalking, and what they can do about it.
All young people recognise stalking and have the
confidence to seek support
In 2023 we commissioned a consultant to
produce a single PSHE lesson about stalking for
Key Stage 3 students to complement our suite of
lessons for Key Stage 4 students. This will be
launched in 2024. All our resources are freely

3

available for schools to download and use themselves with accompanying teacher notes. Alongside our lessons, a 30-minute assembly has been delivered in 15 schools across the country by Alice Ruggles Trust volunteers. Funding secured in December 2023 from Durham Police and Durham Police and Crime Commissioner will enable the assembly to be rolled out across 52 schools in County Durham and Darlington in 2024 alongside a full evaluation of the project. Our social media presence continues to grow and work began on a refreshed website to be launched in 2024. All young people understand the connection between their own emotions, corresponding negative behaviours in relation to stalking, and impact on other people Our project with University of Derby to develop an early perpetrator intervention tool for adolescents continues to seek funding opportunities to pilot targeted support for young people at risk of experiencing or perpetrating stalking. We continue to work with the Knowledge Exchange Network to ensure our messaging has a foundation in the latest research. Adults in contact with young people recognise stalking and know how they could respond appropriately to concerns about stalking During 2023 the Trust delivered more than 20 presentations and on-line or physical training packages to a range of professional practitioners in criminal justice, offender management, social and healthcare, and domestic abuse caseworkers across England and Wales. Trust representatives also delivered talks to psychology and criminology students at several Universities.

We have continued to collaborate with Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys (TEWV) NHS Foundation Trust to develop a range of materials to educate their staff and service users—particularly young people using their children and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS)—about stalking.

2023 saw several new partnerships including with St Mary’s University to train police, CPS, and probation professionals across London; as a critical friend to the Northumbria Stalking Intervention Project; and our continuing involvement with the Findaway project, overseen by Wearside Women in Need.

Our fifth conference, held in October, focused on adolescent stalking. There were 13 speakers

4

across the day and a record attendance of 232, both physical and on-line, representing a range of criminal justice, social care and healthcare professionals, as well as academic researchers and educators. Statement confirming Para 1.18 The Trustees confirm they have given careful whether the trustees have consideration to the Charity Commission’s public had regard to the guidance benefit guidance when setting the Trust’s objecissued by the Charity tives and planning its activities during the year. Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 During 2023 Alice Ruggles Trust continued to
grow and professionalise with clear direction
provided by a new strategy.
Our core work, fostering generations of young
people who understand stalking, the potential
risks of stalking, and what they can do about it
continued to grow through our formal lessons
and informal engagement. Our PSHE resources
have been delivered by teachers or community
police at several thousand schools around the
country; we have a significant social media
presence; and our freely available animated
video, now available in English and Welsh
versions, has been distributed widely both
within schools and via social media.
Our work with professionals continues to be
important to ensure that young people seeking
help get a good response. Our general training
for all professionals continues to be popular in
supporting
people
to
gain
a
better
understanding of the risks of stalking whilst our
education
specific
training
courses
give
professionals the confidence to discuss stalking
with young people.
We are looking forward to our continued growth
in 2024.

Financial Review

Financial Review
Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 Our main sources of income during 2023 were (i)
fees for conferences and professional training
and (ii) individual donations and fundraising,
which together raised over £32,000 during the
year. This has enabled us to sustain our core
activities and maintain a stable financial position
during the year.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 We seek to expand our activities going forward
and recognise that a funding model based
largely on personal donations and training
income is unsustainable as the charity grows.
Given the uncertainties that we face in doing
this, we have built up an equitable reserve that,
after taking into account staffing commitments,
we aim to continue to maintain at a level where
it will sustain the current level of activities for at
least 12 months following any unforeseen
circumstances.
Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 £ 38,000
