**Commission on public benefit)**|Annie's trust strives to provide assistance to the poorest public shelters
within Romania, currently focusing on Adjud Vrancea in the northeast.
With a small team of trusted unpaid Romanian volunteers, we have been
able to increase the quality of life, living conditions, nutrition and medical
treatment for the dogs. By providing essential flea and tick treatment we
have eased the suffering caused by deadly mosquito and tick related
diseases like heartworm, babesia and anaplasma as well as controlling
the very serious skin condition demodex, which is rife.
We fund and provide sleep boxes and kennels for the dogs living outside
in arctic conditions to provide a safe, warm and dry place to sleep.
Puppies are vaccinated and provided with regular food and milk. While
older and sick dogs receive more nutritious food to improve their condition
and recovery.
Dogs within Romanian public shelters receive very little medical care
when they get sick or injured. There is no medical care for the dogs on the
street who are left to suffer and die from common accidents, brutality or
disease. We provide lifesaving medical treatment to all dogs in need, that
would otherwise suffer without our intervention.
We operate a stray feeding programme funding food for abandoned dogs.
We believe that the most sustainable way of controlling the numbers of
dogs on the streets and in the shelters is to promote spay and neuter
campaigns throughout the country. We currently fund year-round
sterilisation programs for the public shelter dogs, strays and also to
owners with limited income for their pets. We educate to encourage better
welfare for their animals.
Annie’s Trust do not rehome dogs directly to the public, but instead we
liaise with trusted rescues and sanctuaries in the UK and Western Europe
who find homes for the dogs within their existing network. This ensures a

Section D Achievements and performance March **2012** **TAR** 4 ## Section D Achievements and performance **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year** We have sterilised over 500 dogs again this year. We work with suppliers to achieve an efficient cost control to ensure each donations goes as far as possible. We have built four new foster pens for dogs that require more care once they leave the clinic but cannot be placed back in general shelter care. This saves daily clinic costs, without placing the dogs at risk. In addition to this, we have built 28 kennels which would house 56 dogs to protect them from the environmental elements. This year we opted to take the opportunity to purchase a year’s supply of parasite treatment for the dogs. This offered a significant saving against ordering as required and ensured the dogs were adequately protected throughout the year. This ultimately improves the dog’s quality of life as simple things like fleas and worms can ultimately lead to very serious conditions for the dogs in these dirty public shelters in Romania. The effects of this can be fatal, and cases of skin conditions alone can cost more than £1,000 per dog in the clinic for treatment. The year has been difficult for fundraising due to the cost-of-living crisis in the UK directly impacting supporters' ability to donate. Fundraising overall is up, but with less per head than previous years. We have tried to be creative with some of our fundraising ideas and options and this included the creation of a monthly direct debit plan, acquiring a lottery license to run raffles and now also have a weekly lottery. ## **Section E Financial review** March **2012** **TAR** 5 £50,000 **Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves** Due to the impact on the costs increasing, we have increased our reserve from two to four months average expenditure.
