the charity as set out in its
governing document|Para 1.17|To relieve poverty, sickness, hardship and distress of
children, orphans and widows primarily in Africa but
also anywhere in the world by providing education,
training and healthcare projects.
One of the main effects resulting from this poverty is a
very low life expectancy rate in Bumala, Kenya.
The relationship between wealth and life expectancy is
largely due to the nature of poverty. E.g., the inability to
see a doctor, access contraception, buy medicine, etc.
all compound the chances of early mortality. Poverty
has impacts beyond general health too, like exposing
people dis-proportionally to unsafe living conditions.
This informs the reality in Kenya, where people over the
age of 65 make up only2.7 percentof the population,
and the average life expectancy is only 59 years.

Olive Bearers has been working closely with
Bumala Visions Community Based Organisation
in Bumala, (BVCBO) Kenya
•
Funded 74 very needy children to attend full
time education at St Annes School - Kenyan
Education Standards.
•
Children receive 2 meals a day, medical care
and a school uniform including a new pair of
shoes and school bag each Christmas. Many
children attending state schools do not get fed
and are therefore slow to learn. By feeding the
children not only improves their health but
enables their brains to absorb and retain
information
•
A number of very needy adults who are
connected to the children at school are also
sponsored. One dear lady suffered fits on a
regular basis. This frightened her customers
away. Her only means of providing for her two
children was to carry water but when she fell
down, many of her customers were alarmed.
One of our Trustees recognised the need for
medical investigation. A sponsor stepped
forward that very day to enable her to be taken
to hospital for scans and consultation. The
scanner was not working in the first hospital in
Busia when they turned up for the appointment
so another hospital was found in Kisumu where
she attended, received medication and hasn’t
had a fit for well over 12 months. She is now
more able to live a normal life and care for her
children. She is so grateful to God and her
sponsors who cared enough to step forward.

Electricity was being installed in the town of
Bumala to many homes. Ps Ben enquired about
the installation of electricity at the school but it
was seen to be impossible. Once more, the
God of the Impossible stepped forward and
provided a way where there was none!
•
There was a fault with the meters installed in the
town and had to be replaced. This meant that
the electricity could not be switched on until
everything had been satisfactorily installed. Ps
Ben contacted the Electricity Board and
explained that it was important for the school to
start using electricity as soon as possible.
Permission was granted immediately - so St
Annes School was the FIRST to have electricity
turned on and usage was FREE until the meter
situation had been resolved! Praise God! His
hand of blessing is certainly on this school!

Because schools were catching up after the
Covid Pandemic closure, all school holidays
were reduced to just one week between terms
and learning was crammed into 9 months over 2
years! So instead of the new school year
starting on 1stJanuary 2022, it begun on
1/7/2021. This meant that we had to speedily| |---|---|---| Page 2 |||review funding in order to send out the required
funds and also employ 2 new Teachers for
Grade 4 (one of whom would be Head Teacher).
As before, God had provided every penny in
good time. We are so grateful to all our
sponsors who enable this ministry to continue to
grow.

education so as to produce disciplined, diligent
and excellent individuals

A number of sponsors had requested funds be
sent to purchase a nice gift (maybe a party
dress) for their children. Knowing that many of
these families would not even have a simple
meal on Christmas Day, FOOD4FAMILIES was
launched whereby donations were received in
order that food parcels of maize, beans, lentils,
sugar and a small amount of money could be
given to each parent/guardian according to their
need. It was such a joy to see the families
receive their gifts so readily during the Zoom

we thank God that, in the meantime, He has provided

Providing water for the school, e.g., ‘hand dug’
well at the school which yields around 2 thousand
litres of water per day and gives needy people the
opportunity to fill their containers.

During lockdown, a Football Team was set up for
all children and kits supplied by FC Lakeside,
Cheltenham, UK
•
Access to medical advice is not readily available
in Bumala. Olive Bearers facilitated access to
doctors and treatment for acute conditions, e.g.,
Epilepsy, Malaria, Rabies
•
Olive Bearers supported the Christmas
Celebrations by providing funds to purchase
shoes and a school bag for each child.
•
Progression through the school is celebrated with
Graduation Ceremonies and Certificates.
•
Gowns and mortar boards are handmade by
volunteers in the community giving the children a
real sense of educational achievement from an
early age.
•
FOOD4FAMILIES established Christmas 2021 to
provide the families/guardians/well wishers of St
Annes Children with food parcels as a Christmas
Gift
•
A one off Grant received from Souter Charitable
