Alpraham and Calveley Reading Room Trustees Annual Report 2024 1186105
The Trust was founded in 1892 when land was gifted by Lord Tollemache, the local landownerand set up by a deed. A hall was built “ to provide the male inhabitants of Calveley, Alpraham and neighbourhood with a place where they may spend their leisure time pleasantly and intellectually and with a suitable place for such meetings and entertainments as may be approved by the Committee”. Happily, the Trust is more inclusive today!
The Trust owned and ran the Alpraham and Calveley Reading Room for the benefit of the residents of both villages, for many years. That mission remains the same today.
The hall became increasingly dilapidated and was unused and not fit for purpose. In 2018, the land was sold for redevelopment and the proceeds invested.
The Trust had previously had charitable status but became a CIO in November 2019
The Trust is managed by, currently, 7 Trustees, all of whom are both volunteers and local residents.
A new hall was built for the parish council by a housing developer under a planning gain arrangement and it was agreed that the Trust would lease the new village hall for a peppercorn rent and continue to run the hall for the benefit of the residents of the villages and local area.
The Hall, a basic shell, was handed over to the Parish Council by the developer in February 2024.
The Trust made two grants to the Parish Council of £23430 and £5500 to enable it to complete the building, with floor coverings, kitchen units and some tables and chairs.
The Hall was further equipped from our own funds and, also a grant from Bunbury Parochial Charities for £1600, for the appliances in the kitchen.
The Hall opened in September 2024. It is now called Alpraham and Calveley Village Hall rather than the Reading Room. We have been delighted that the hall is already being well used in the four months since opening! The community had not benefited from a functioning village hall for over a decade and now there is every indication that it will provide a successful facility, which meets the needs of the residents of the villages and benefits their welfare. The hall has so far, been booked for various classes including Pilates and ballroom dancing, and, also children’s parties. The Trustees have run two community events during 2024.
