Princ5 al alm5 and activities
The prfncipal objects of the British Suzuki Music Ass￿l8t10n (-8SMA-) are lo advance education in
the art and science of music by the promotion of the methods of education developed by Dr Shinichi
Suzuki with pa￿'cUlar reference to the musical education of children in the United Kingdom.. We
continue lo operate in accordanGe with those charitable objects.
The Suzuki teaching method developed in Japan by Shinichi Suzuki 15 fouDde(l on the belief that
8very child can leam and emphasises the advantagès of providing an environment in which every
child's ability can flourish. An early stsrt for the child at three or four years old, with a qualified Suzukl
teather and the involvement of parents in daily practice, step by step learning. repetition, group
lessons and listening all contribute to the success of Suzuki teaching.
The main focus of the 8SMA is on teacher tralning. We ￿rrentty hold part-time courses In violin,
viola, piano. cello. flute. recorder an¢J brass whieh lead lo the Certificate and Diploma of the European
Suzuki Association. Additional courses are held for trained teachers. There are also short courses.
emonslralion days and meetings for parents.
As the national aSSoc(a￿on. the BSMA is the umbrella organisalion for trained teachers and Iheir
students throughout the UK. The 8SMA promotes the Suzuki approach by providing informatlon lo the
public 8nd the media. Members reeeive the annual BSMA journal Ability. Repertoire and publlcatlons
are available from the BSMA bookshop at a discount for members. Even15 are held around the
country, including Concerts, workshops and conferences. Funds and donations provide stholarships
and bursarie5 lor teacher Iraining. The BSMA also maintains links with other Suzuki organlsallon$
throughout the world, including the European Suzuki Association and International Suzuki
Association.

The BSMA Is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and registered as a chaiity in October 2020.
The Executive Committee Iwhith indudes the Trusiees of the charity) con￿$1$ mainly of Suzukl
teachers and parents.11 is responsible for governance and ￿lIcY makillg. The School Committee. a
standing committee of qualified teachers and teacher trainers from various parts of the country, has
an important advisory role. The Chalr of the School Commitlee is also an elected member of the
Executive Committee. The School Committee advises the Executive Committee on policie5 relating to
teacher training and implements the BSMA policy In the regular organisalion of teacher training
courses. The directors of the principal teacher training courses are ex officio members of the School
Committee. Sub-committees are also sel up from lime to time to report to the School Committee or
the Executive Committee.
The day.to-day management of Ihe BSMA is undertaken by full time slAff at the BSMA office.
Volunteers. many of them members of the committees, also play an important rolB in individual
projects.
Membership of the BSMA is largely made up ol Suzuki teachers and pupils. families but is also open
lo anyone with a general interest in music educabon.

To enable wider public access to the benefits of a music educatlon, the BSMA continues to take its
Suzuki leaching into Local Authority schi)ols on the basis of a heavily subsidised membership
arrangement. 11 also makes a number of bursary awards annually to deserving trainee teachers. In
addition, all BSMA concerts a￿ open to the wblic with seats priced below norrnal commercial levels.
Flnancial results for the
ear
During the year ended 31 Augusl 2025. the BSMA generated total incoming resourc8s of £345.159
12024.. £314,067). Membership subscriptions increased to £140,310 {2024.- £103,650), reflecting
continued growth in both family and teacher memberships. Donations received amounted lo £43.750
12024.. £30.8601, including support from the London Suzuki Group, the Greys Charltsble Trust, the
WCC County Fund and the Richmond Foundation.
Events income tolalled £65,20512024.' £85.804). wth the reduction rellecting the absence of a major
gala event during the year. Teacher Iraining fees were £59,59212024= £64.6561 and music and
literature sales rose to £35.969 <2024: £27.516).
Total resourrR5 expended were £356,198 {2024.. £306,675)- Salaries and nalional insurance rose to
£82,73212024.' £65,938) primarily due lo additional staffing. Events expenditure increased lo
£115,061 12024.. £69,065). driven by the costs of the National Suzuki Workshop venue and re18ted
activities. Offlce and communications costs were £70.64612024'. £66,659).
The net result for the year was a deficrt of £11.039 (2024.. surplus of £7.3921. In ad¢Yition, a prfor
perioé adjustment of £108,074 was made to correct the brought lo￿ard unrestricted funds, resulting

Restricted scholarshi

During the year, the Trustees reviewed the restricted scholarship funds held by the chadty. The
Trustees concluded that the original purpose of these funds had been satisfied and that there was no
continuing restriction over their use. Accordingly, the balance of the restricted scholarship funds has
been transferred lo unreslricled funds. The Trvslees a￿ salisfied Ihal this treatment reflects the
substance of the original restriction and the current posibon of the charity.
Rgserves Polic
The general fund is considered to be a prudent reserve to gwe (x)nfidence in the futijre of the BSMA
for teacher training and to encourage more pupils lo study by the Suzuki method.

accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards. including FRS 102.. The
Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland.
The law applicable to charitie5 in England and Wales requires the Iruslees to prepare finanaal
stalements for each financial year which give a true and fair wew of the s18te of aff8irs of the charity
and of ils incoming resources and application of resources for that peri(xl.

1. Accounting Pollclès
The following accounting policies hav8 been used consistently in dealing with items which are
considered material in relation to the financial slatements.
a) Basls of preparation of ac¢ounts
The financial slaternenls have been prepared under the hlstorical cost convention and comply with
the Companies Act 1985. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance wilh Ststemenl
of Recommended Practice {SORPI, 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities.. Statement of
recommended practice. published in March 2005 and applicable accounting stsndards. Where
appropriate comparative figures have been reststed.
b) Fund accountlng
Unrestricted funds are available for use 8t Ihe discretlon of the Trustees in fijrtherance of the
charitable objectives of the 8SI. Restricted scholarship funds are fLtnds subject to specific reslricts'ons
imposed by donors.
c) Incomlng rè$ourGoS
All income is accounted for as soon as the BSI has entltlem&nt to the income and there Is certalnty of
rec8iPt and the amount is quantifiable.
dl Members subscrlptSon8 and events & conferences
Subscriptions and events are accounted for in the year lo which they apply. Subscription income
received during the year that relates lo a subsequent financial accountsng pariod Is carried forward as
a credltor in the balance sheel and shown as defetted Incom8.
el Resourcès exponded
All expenditure 1$ aGGounted for on an accruals basis and has been listed under headings that
aggregate all the costs related to Ihal activity. Resources expended on stsff and office and
communications costs are not allocated behveen cost categories. as any apportionment would be
rbllrary given the small si2e of the office. Govemance costs are those incurred In eonnection with the
management of BSI'S assets, org8nisational adrninistralion and compliance with constilulional and
stalutory requlrements.
f) Flxed assets
Assets intended to be of ongoing use to BSI in carrying out its aclivities are capitalised as fixed
assets. Depreciation Is charged on tangible fixed assets al Ihe following rates. so as to write them off
over their expected useful lives.. Office equipment 10tyA of cost per annum- Computer equipment and
software 20% of cost per annum,. Website design 25% of cosl per annum.
g) Glft Aid
In December 2002 the Inland Revenue confimed thal all categories of membership would be eligible
for lax relief under the Gift Aid Scheme. Incoming resources from tax reclaims are included in the
SOFA at the same time as the grft to whith they relate.
h) Stock
Stocks of music and literature are held at the I0￿r of cost or net realisable value.
