Obiectlves and activities Undertaking benefits advice including full benefits check for those who have been diagnosed with an asbestos related disease, the majority of whom are terminally ill with mesothelioma (asbestos related lung cancer) or lung cancer or other debilitating diseases such as asbestosis and pleural thickening. East Midlands Asbestos Support Team Advice about Government Compensation Schemes Providing information and advice about making civil compensation claims. Offer support, advice, advocacy for those who have been bereaved through an asbeslos related disease. We organise events and send out newsletters and resources to those affected or who have been bereaved through an asbestos related disease. We encourage our service users to share their experiences, (sharing patient stories in our newslelter as well as meeting online) which helps to reduce isolation. We organise events to raise awareness in the general population about the issues facing mesotheliorna victims and raising awarene5S to prevent future exposure. We act as a voice for those diagnosed with 8n asbestos related disease, or their families. We publlsh leaflets, booklets, articles and other materials for the benefit of the local community to raise awareness and understanding about the dangers of exposure to asbestos, the incidence of the disease in the area and the issues facing victims which will go some way towards preventing future exposure and consequential disease. We worf( with statutory agencie5 and health professlonals when required. We take an active role in the Asbestos Victims Support Groups, Forum and undertaking necessary tasks in supporting our aims. Summary of tho maln actlvlties undertaken for the public beneflt We help and support anyone diagnosed with an asbest05 related disease and thelr families. This includes welfare benefits and financial support as a result of ill-health caused by an asbestos related disease. Financial support helps with increased cost of heating. travelling costs for home visits, buying equipment, reducing the costs caused by ill health as well as creating important rnemories for famllies such as holidays. Help redu social isolation and foster a sense of community for those affected by asbestos related diseases Public benefit statement The Trustees confimi that they have complied with the duty in section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit, 'Charities and Public Benefit,.
East Midlands Asbestos Support Team Summary of the maln achievements during th8 period EMAST wag ingtrumental in recovering £7,710,997.71 in welfare benefits throughoul the Easl Midlands for people diagnosed with asbeslos related diseases. In addition, our Panel of Solicitors have reported to us settled civil compensation claims amounting lo £11,822,645. We reprinted and updated our successful and well received Bereavement Handbook. We also created a Legacy Leaflet to encourage individuals to consider making a will and leaving a legacy to us. We produced and distributed our bi-monthly Stepping Forward Magazine (for servi users who have been bereavodl and Wellbeing Magazine (for patients and carers). EMAST continued to play an active role in the Asbestos Victims Support Group and campaigning on issues relevant to victims of asbestos related diseases. EMAST continues to hold monthly Bereavement Support Groups across the East Midlands, Pats'ent and Carer groups and weekly online rneetings for Bereaved community. Working in partnership wilh Oerbyshire Wildlife Trust, EMAST launched our Breathing Space Project in April 2024, sponsoring an area of outstanding natural beauty and woodland. The generous donations of our supporters paid for benches, a sculptural signpost base, leaflets and signage. EMAST currently has over 1500 members wrth whom we are regularly In touch with, Flnanclal revlew The financial position remains stable with reduced staff costs from the end of 2024125 and healthy reserves. The charlty's pollcy on reserves In line with guidance issued by the Charity Commlssion, the trustees review the reserves of the charity and have adopted the following policy We aim to maintain unrestricted reserves sufficient to meel any redundancy payments and lo maintain activity for 12 months. Flnancial rlsks We are reliant on Charitsble donations. particularly from Panel Firms. If these were to reduce significantly the organisation would have to look for new sources of funding. I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of East Midlands Asbestos Support Team (the charity) for the year ended 31 March 2025.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner’s statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or

the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Lottery 8ereavement - for a more targeted and concentrated programme of support to those who have been bereaved following the loss of someone with Asbestos disease. Macmillan -to offer a face-towface Patient and Carer Support Group in Leicester facilitated by our Macmillan Benefits Adviser & Meso UK. This group provides an opportunity for patients to feel part of a wder community while offering more holistic support. We have also funded a coach for travel from Leicester to Westminster Houses of Parliament for Patients and Carers Together against Asbestos - National Lottery Community Fund (Award for All) - for small projecl to assist car$, produce carers handbook and event for Carers. Awareness Conferences fund - To organise awareness of the Dangers of Asbestos. Welfare Rights seconded worker fund - for the delivery of advice to non-cancer asbestos disease cases. Breathing Space Fund - funding from various funders I donations lo be donated to Derbyshire Wildlife Trust lo develop their facilities so that we can encourage people to visit the sile, walk and be mindful in the woods. 11 is recognised that being out in nature and taking exercise can have a positive impact on both physical and mental health. 4.
