Chair’s Report for Annual Review Darlington Football Club Foundation was established in the spring of 2019 in order to extend the Club’s community focus and charitable activity. The Football Club approached independent people to become trustees and to use their experience and knowledge to incorporate the Foundation as a charity that was separate from the main club. The initial period during 2019 saw three main priorities being delivered: - Establishment of the Foundation as a charity with trustees who could oversee the development; - Publicity with existing Darlington FC fans and stakeholders to demonstrate the charitable intent of the club; - Deliver a number of community-based activities including football training programmes and volunteering opportunities. A group of six trustees were recruited and the formal incorporation as charity was completed in October 2019. A number of publicity opportunities were exploited to raise the profile of the Foundation including regular features in the Football Club’s matchday programme, website and social media. A separate social media identity for the Foundation was also instigated. A number of school holiday football coaching programmes were delivered which deliberately made small profits to help fund the early work of the Foundation. Some of these funds were also used to subsidise young people who could not afford the courses including groups from Darlington’s deprived wards and also a group of Syrian refugee children. In March 2020 the opportunity to generate grant funds from the National League Trust was identified and the application process started. Then COVID-19 happened and all development activity halted alongside Darlington FC’s own lockdown, furlough and hibernation. In May 2021 Darlington FC Foundation were successful in their bid to the National League Trust and to securing the match funding to appoint their own Development Manager.
