## **Bromley Relief in Need CIO**

## **Trustees’ Annual Report**

for the period from 18[th ] October 2019 to 31st December 2020 Post Formation of CIO 1185879

## **Charity registration number:** 1185879

## **Introduction**

Bromley Relief in Need has its origins dating back to 1631 when the Bishop of Rochester made a donation for the benefit of the poor of Bromley Parish Church. It still has a connection with the church as the vicar of the Parish Church is the chair of the current charity. Over the centuries various other donations were received and mergers made until 1973 when there was a new charity structure, which was registered with the Charity Commission number 262,591. The Trustees changed the charity structure and became a Charity Incorporated Organisation (CIO) on 18th October 2019. It continues to help the poor residents of Bromley, but now covers the whole of the London Borough of Bromley and not just within the Boundaries of the Parish of Bromley Parish Church.

## **Trustees report for the period ending 31st December 2020**

Our objectives are

To provide relief, either generally or individually, to persons resident in the London Borough of Bromley who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress

We do this by giving grants or providing essential items to the poor of Bromley Borough. To ensure that the need is genuine, we only accept referrals from professional third party sponsors such as social workers, healthcare professionals, religious leaders or another charity.

We received 117 applications for support but deemed only 56 to be sufficiently in need to warrant acceptance or were referred to other charities, such as Bromley Brighter Beginnings. We formed a partnership with the Beckenham Parochial Charity during the year and they accepted 4 referrals from us resulting in a total of 60 beneficiaries.

## **Trustees**

The trustees meet about 6 times a year and have frequent informal email communications. They have overall control and responsibility for policy and major decision making. They are unpaid and make no expense claims. There are no employees or volunteers. There are also no overheads. We believe that our efforts ensure that our charity works to the public benefit in accordance with the Charity Commission Guidelines

1. **Public benefit: the public benefit requirement (PB1)** ,

2. **Public benefit: running a charity (PB2)** and

3. **Public benefit: reporting (PB3)**

Our current trustees at 31[st] December 2020 were

Jessica Arnold Peter Ayres Jane Cleveland Mark Gill Simon Jeal James Harratt (Chair and ex-officio trustee) Keith Nye Edwin Leslie Tree

Our Constitution requires not less than two appointed trustees, nor more than nine appointed trustees and there shall be one ex-officio trustee

## **Financial**

Our income rarely met expenditure of the last few years of the preceding charity. However, since the establishment of the new CIO, our income has been exceptionally high and has exceeded expenditure by £7198. This surplus income results from several large donations for which we are very grateful.

- £1,000 from a member of Bromley Parish Church

- £3,338 from Bromley Parish Church £3,500 from the National Lottery

£1,000 from the West Kent Masons

With the help of Bromley and Croydon Women’s Aid we ran a campaign to raise funds for victims of domestic violence, which raised £1344 and will be restricted for this purpose.

The above resulted in an income of £17,541 against an expenditure of £10,343.

We do not expect this to continue and plan to hold on to our inherited investments for the near future to provide a stable income.

The accounts have been prepared by a trustee, Edwin Tree, and independently verified as correct by a retired accountant. They have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis.
