April 2023

Revlew of the Year
There have been nine full PCC meetings since the last APCM with the Revd.
Gareth Howles chairing the meetings. May saw the introduction of sub
groups to the PCC consisting of.. Pastoral, Worship, Outreach, Discipleship
and Children and Youth work. It was decided thal Ihese groups would meet
monthly and that every other monlh there would be a full PCC meeting. The
Jubilee weekend was a great success. The road was closed for the
afternoon, sand art was on offer at church along wilh refreshments provided
kindly by the Friends of St John's, music was also played from the church
bells.
On Pentecost Sunday there was a Churches Together service held with
music provided by Eileen and the music group.
The heating project was approved by the DAC and we applied for various
grants to help with Ihe cost. Lots of the congregation are fundraising by doing
sponsored walks and there is a meal planned. We are now waiting for an
electrician to become available lo carry out the work. Our thanks go to Ray
for all his hard work and expertise in bringing the project to fruition and also
to The Friends of St John's for their continual fundraising. We also discussed
future renovations of the church hall and the possible temporary removal of
some pews in church to allow for tables and chairs to offer refreshments after
the 10.30 services.
In Autumn we held our annual Bonfire without bangs, which again was a
great success. The Friend's of St John's held a brass band concert which
was very successful and Gareth provided us with a very enjoyable gin and
quiz night. This was g￿al fun and through donations provided a nice
contribution to the heating fund.
For Christmas the trees outside church in the grounds were lit up. We held
our carol service by candlelight, two popular Christingle services and
Midnight mass. The Nativity service was well attended. Thank you to Farsley
Fire and Smoke for the delicious sandwiches after the service.
Gareth has continued to build strong links with the local schools and this year
Farsley Fajfield had a Christingle service in church.
In January we had a lovely Confirmation service at St John's with Bishop
Arun.
There was also a music event by Dean freedman which was held in church.
St John's were helping the community by hosting the event for another
venue.
A lent course was run at the Community Church written and led by Shirley
entitled "Athletes for Christ." At Easter there were joint services with Rodley
and the Community Church and on Maundy Thursday, good Friday and
Easter Sunday the traditional Communion services. hour at the cross, sonrise
service followed by breakfast. A new service was introduced once a month in
the evening, a Ted service and the Even song service will begin again after
Easter.
Farsley famerfs Market is still taking place after many years at St John's.
Bev and lan Tuke are now standing down from running the café after many

years of devoted servi￿. Great thanks go to them both for all their time and
hard work over the years. The Famerfs Market are keen to continue with the
café in the future if no-one from church can help run it.
It has been a busy year of services, worship. and social events. Many thanks
go to our PCC members and to everyone who V￿rk for the good of St Johr)'s
and its community. Your help and support are greatly appreciated.

Financial Review 2022
Charity accounts are split befv￿en 'Unrestricted' funds (of which some may
be 'Designated' for a spectfic cause) and 'Restricted' funds. Unrestricted
funds relate to money the PCC can spend on anything that fulfils the
objectives of the church. Restricted funds record donations and expenditure
for specific purposes or projects.
Income re￿iVed from regular and onevoff giving has remained increased in
2022 compared to 2021. Seeing an increase in regular giving is something
that is really encouraging to the church - as believers, we are called to give
our time and our fInan￿S to support the work of the church. In 2021 we
joined the Parish Giving Scheme, which allovrfs anyone to give to church by
direct debit. This remains very popular and we are continuing to see more
people giving in this way. This helps the church as it does not incur the
charges we have handling cash and enables us to receive grft aid income
faster. In order to meet our obligations to the Diocese and our church's
running costs, we would always encourage members of the church to think
and pray about how much they donate.
Our restricted income increased. most significantly from income (grants and
individual donations) received towards the heating project and a one-off
contribution to energy costs from the Diocese.
Other income increases have corne from rental income and proceeds from
events. This is mainly as a result of the church having been open throughout
the whole year, compared with the after-effects of Covid in 2021.
Again this year we were disappointed that we were not able to meet the cost
of the whole Parish Share. The Parish Share is the contribution that each
parish church in the Diocese of Leeds pays to fund the cost of clergy and
housing. and other Diocese costs. from mission to administration. We fully
intend to pay what we owe. and have presented the unpaid Share as a
liability in the Statement of Assets and Liabilities. We paid as much as we
could whilst maintaining posrtive unrestricted cash funds.
Our expenditure has increased this year due to an increase in the amount
paid on the Parish sha￿ compared with 2021, and the impact of energy
costs for the church and the hall. We V￿uld expect to see a further increase
in these costs in 2023 given the full year impact.
A decision has been made on the design of the new heating system. During
2022 we spent money on further trial infrared heating systems which was

required to obtain the faculty necessary to stsrt work on the system.
As we close the year we are in a similar position than we were at the end of
2021. With £13,045 in total Unrestricted and Designated funds we have
enough to continue the work of St John's. We still have to start construction
work on the new heating system, which will commence in 2023. This will be a
major financial commitment for which we have £7.370 in restricted funds at
the end of 2021 and £11,721 in designated funds.
Thank you to all who donate to the church.. be it by standing order, online or
by cash or card. St John's has been a light to our community over many
years, and as we move into a post-covid we can see great
opportunities to continue to shine God's love. The church is run by people
with generously donated time and worKlerful talents" this is supported by
generosity in giving money.
Reserves policy
It is PCC policy to maintain a balance on Unrestricted funds of roughly
£1.500 at the end of each month. after paying the Parish Share to the
Diocese. We end the year with £1.324 in reseNe, which is just below the
reserves policy. We were not able to pay the full Parish Share to the Diocese
as noted in the above commentary. We continue to look forways to minimise
our costs and maximise income.
We continue to have ￿ major financial commttments for the ftjture: paying
the Share and funding the heating project. Both of these commitrnents will
require the generosity of church members. and our wder community, both in
terms of generosity of donations, and generosity of time and ideas in
researching grants and fundraising plans.

## **Independent examiner’s report**

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of St John the Evangelist, Farsley (charity no 1185811) (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31 December 2022.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the charity ’s trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ( “ the Act ” ).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

## **Independent examiner’s statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that, in any material respect:

- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act;

- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

REPORTS FROM CHURCH COMMirrEES AND GROUPS
Baby and Toddler Group
The group runs termtime from 10-11.30 and we ask for a voluntary contribution of a pound towards
refreshments. The sessions a￿ relaxed with freestyle play, refreshments are available throughout the
session. There is song time at the end with a mixture of nursery rhymes and bible songs. We try to
ensure that we speak to everyone particulady anyone who is new. There are be￿een 25-30 adults
with their children and new people come every week. We are neady at full capacity for the hall so we
may need to look at options for the future. We are very grateful for the volunteers who set up and
serve refreshments every week. The feedback is that we offer a friendly, welGoming, and relaxed
group which is really encouraging. Our aim is to reach out to families and people with young children.
building relationships and sharing the Gospel. It is an outreach group with a Christian element ending
with a blessing and a prayer at the end.
Chlldren's group at the 10.30 service
During 2022. the children's work at church has been using the church hall as a large space which the
children have loved to use to explore, play games and do craft activities during the 10.30am service.
All the sessions are grounded in the Bible- following the same readings that are being heard in the
main church service. We encourage our children and young people to think about what they are
listening to. and have lots of fun putting into action what we have heardl
We have a great group of children attending each week which we thank God for. We now have
groups running at the same time each Sunday- one for younger children (up to Year 4) and one for
young people (from Year 5 upwards). We have a dedicated team of leaders and volunteers who give
their time to helping our children discover more about who God is and the good news of the Christian
faith. We are very grateful for the help of committed volunteers without whom the Sunday School
would not be possible. We are aiming to move to three groups in 2023. for which we would need
more volunteers.
The children love coming back into the main service and sharing what they have read and C￿ated
that moming.
As many people who come to Christian faith do $0 when they are young, we a￿ aiming to grow the
Sunday School and reach out to the community. This will be done only with a thorough risk
assessment. paying particular attention to health and safety guidelines and ensuring C£*mpliance with
Di0￿san safeguarding policies and DBS requirement.
The Sunday School leaders and volunteers.
Bereavement Support Group
The Bereavement support group meets every 4th Friday of the month at St John's church hall
between 11-12 in the lounge. Farsley Bereavement Support Group provides a safe and supportive
space to talk for those who have lost someone who is dear to them.

Study Group
We meet once or twice a month for fellowship and bible study. We have recentiy gone through acts
and women of the New Testament and have just started Books of the Bible. We wnuld welcome
anyone new. We will be meeting again after Easter.
Janet Whitaker
Study Group
We continue to meet usually in four-week sessions with a break in between. We have looked at
Wisdom literature, in particular Ecclesiastes and its relevance for today and what the bible has to say
about old age. By contrast we looked at letters to Timothy and Titus. We have a limlted amount of
space but please ask if you are interested in joining us.

Parish Office
The office has been busy with bookings for the hall with parties. MHA use and charities using the hall
for their groups. I have been sending out invoices and keeping a check on payments for hall
bookings. The filing cabinets is the big job that needs tackling this year. I have been organising
quotes for on-going repairs to the church hall. some work has been completed but other jobs are still
outstsnding. The notice sheet continues to be emailed to those WIK) wish to receive it this way. If you
would like to be added to the list phone the office 0113 2566878 or email me

The Church Choir and Muslc Group
Our small choir continues to lead the church music at weekly moming services. Sadly, due to illness,
some of our members find it difficult to sing regularly but they all attend when they feel well enough. I
am happy to report that Ruth joined our choir earlier this year, bringing our current number up to six. I
am always happy to hear from anyone who would like to add to our number. We value enthusiasm at
St John's.
With the assistance of friends, our choir, once again provided the music for our annual service of
carols by Candlelight, breaking with tradition in 2022 by holding it on a Saturday- 17th December (to
accommodate the world cup final on the following day.) it was well attended and I think well
appreciated. My thanks go to all the choir members including those who joined us to augment the
sound. Their attendance is always appreciated.
The choir have managed to swell the singing of hymns at three funerals and a wedding lately and
have two weddings coming up when the organ and choir have been requested. It is good to see that
things do seem to be getting back to normal this year. Thanks to those who joined us to swell the
sound even further.
Atthough we had to curtail Evensong after a couple of attempts as the numbers attending did not
make it worthwhile, we do hope to begin again on the third Sunday of each month, beginning this
April. We pray that better attendance will ensure the survival of evensong at St Johns.
Sadly, due to various commitments, we are unable to provide a choir during holy week thi5 year but
intend to use Stainer's Crucifixion as a meditation. We hope that the congregation will support us and
attend as many as possible of the Holy Week services.
My thanks and appreciation go once again to our small but enthusiastic choir. l am sure the
congregation sing with more confidence when led by our choir.
Our music group continue to lead the all age services on the third week of each month, when V￿rk
and home commitments allow. Unfortunately, numbers have been low recently and we would
welcome anyone with a musical instrumenl who feel they could join us once a month to make a joyful
noise unto the Lord. Voices are wonderful instruments too!

Churches Together In Farsley
The small committee Continues but unfortunately no￿ne Is keen to take on any of the offices.
However, it was good to welcome Reverend Mo, the new minister at the Community Church. She
must split her time be￿een four churches as well as ministry training sessions so cannot always
meet with us. We have had lh8 usual services together, the AGM, Palm Sunday, Good Friday and the
Lent course based on the film ° Chocolat.. The numbers that attended were small but they enjoyed
the course and the discusslons. Possibly a change of night might help as Tuesday seems to be a
busy night for many people.
Largely, due to benefittlng from the Methodist fund offered to the circuit for children and outreach
work, we made a very positive contribution to the Queen's Jubilee Weekend when Town street was
closed to traffic. Children and their parents enjoyed our sand art station. We offered this free of
charge but parents were keen to make donations.

Social events
This year we held a Christmas singalong and bonfire without bangs. Both events were well attended.
The famier's market continues to bring in a steady income each month. lan and myself are stepping
down from running the café this tlme and unfortunately no one has volunteered to take this
commitment on. The Famier's markel has decided that they will continue to run the café rather than it
finish altogether.

Sunflower Memory Cafe
We stsrted the sunflower memory cafe mostly for people suffering from Alzheimer or Dementia and
their carers in February 2016 providing somewhere to come and talk and make friends with people
with the same problems. Anybody is welcome to the cafe. It is held every third Saturday of each
month from 10 - 12. We have tea, coffee, and toasted teacakes. Most months we have entertainment.
In July this year we took about 26 people to the café at Tong Garden Centre for afternoon tea and
had a look round. On the 9th of September we held a beetle drive to raise some money for the café
and had a good time. On the 1 Olh December we held the Sunflower café's Christmas party.

APPENDIX- ASSOCIATED REPORTS
Friends of St. Johns
Another successful twelv& months for the Friends of St. Johns, getting back to nomiality after
Covid. As usual, we have raised money from various events including table top sales, farmerfs
market, Christmas raffle, heritage event, sponsored wheelchair pushlwalk and a brass band
concert. In January we presented another cheque for £3,000 to the church towards the heating
system and we are still fundraising for this. In June we held our Jubilee tea party which was
very successful and well attended. We held our Heritage open day in September in the Church.
This is based on Farsley village and ils people and was held as part of the National Heritage
open weekend. This was not as well attended as in previous years but this was due in part to
the fad it was held a few days before the Queen's funeral. A wonderful array of photographs
was provided and displayed. Thanks go to the two Malcolms. Jim and the other helpers.
Pudsey civi¢ society brought along an array of books. Allan Hardcastle once again brought
along memorabilia. The Friends of Rehoboth cemetery had a stall with literature about their
project of clearing and restoring the old Rehobolh cemetery on Coal Hill Lane. In September
we also held our sponsored event, but with a difference this lime. We had a sponsored
wheelchair push and walk. In November we had a very suctsssful brass band concert
presented by the West Yorkshire Brass Band; it was very enjoyable. This was sponsored by
Nick Taylor in memory of his wife Rachael. We have had three very SUC￿ssful meals for
members of the Friends of St Johns and their friends and relatsves. These were very well
attended. We had a cury night at Deevas, a meal at The Fleece and a Christmas meal at the
Fleece. December saw the drawing of the annual Christmas raffle. We continue to have
monthly sessions gardening in the churchyard. We also continue to have regular tables at the
farmerfs markets and table top sales selling bric- a brac and books to help with fundraising.
CAN YOU HELP? Wo are struggling at present to get enough people to help with tho

more physical jobs e. g. setting up and taking down the tables for the farnier's market
and table top sales In church and getting out the boxes from the garage for Ihese
events. If you or anyone you know can help with these tasks. please see a committe8
Member. You only need to spare half an hour a month. Any help would be greatly
appreclated. For the foreseeable futuro we have had to stop settlng up tho tables as tho
majority of the committoe aro In their 70s and 805.
Thank you to everyone who helps al our 8vents.
