Old School Community Rooms Charity No. 1185789
Annual Report of the Trustees 14th October 2019 - 30th September 2020
The Old School Community Rooms (OSCR, Charity No.1185789) was formed on 14th October 2019 and registered with the Charities Commission as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. The aim of OSCR is to help mitigate social isolation particularly for older people and the disabled, provide support for families with young children and act as a focus for community activities, education and events. To this end it has provided a venue for the community which will enable such activities.
Trustees
At the time of the formation of the charity three trustees were appointed: John Harrison (1 year), Paul Skidmore (2 years) and Nicki Main (3 years). Nicki Main resigned soon after incorporation. There were three further appointments during the year, each for a three-year term of office. David Holvey and David Jones were appointed on 19/11/19. Elizabeth Biggs-Poyner was appointed on 5/02/20. John Harrison was re-elected to continue as a trustee for a further three years at the end of his first term of office on 14/10/20. In addition to the trustees, Vivienne Swift continued as treasurer and Brian Ingram as an adviser. Kerry-Anne Canning (nee. Welsh) was appointed as Bookings Secretary for Harborough Magna Village Hall.
The Building
The land on which the new village hall has been built is subject to a Deed of Dedication granted by the Parochial Church Council. The Old School Top Room was demolished in August 2019 and construction of the new village hall commenced in November 2019 with an estimated finish date May 2020. The National Lottery Community Fund provided grant for the building and the trustees worked closely with their representatives, CDD Ltd (appointed OSCR Project manager) and Trendgrey Ltd (builder) throughout the build period. The building was eventually completed in August 2020 and handed over to OSCR on 15th September 2020.
COVID
Not long after the commencement of the build, the COVID pandemic interfered with the projected completion date, while building continued, the rate of
progress was slowed. OSCR is grateful to Chris Duignan (CDD Ltd) and Nick Henderson (Trendgrey Ltd) for their support during what was a difficult period of time.
Policies
During the year the trustees worked to develop policies for the charity and those listed here are in place:
COVID Advice to Hirers COVID Special Conditions Access to Building Terms and Conditions of Hire Safeguarding Privacy Lone Working Health and Safety GDPR Equal Opportunities Cookie
Fundraising
During the year the charity raised funds through a number of activities. OSCR (the charity) has registered with HMRC and is now able to claim ‘gift aid’ on all donations made. The ‘pledge a brick’ promotion raised almost £1,000. The trustees extend their thanks to Norman Clarke for managing this effort. A Crowdfunding initiative set up to raise funds to help furnish the village hall, through the Harborough Magna Village Hall website, raised almost £5,000.
Events
OSCR held two events during the year:
To mark the support of the Big Lottery Community Fund a presentation cheque was presented to representatives of OSCR, Ian Bentlett and Elizabeth BiggsPoyner, during a short ceremony on 23rd January 2020.
On the 26th September 2020 OSCR organised an ‘open’ day for local residents.
The OSCR trustees continue to work to ensure the village hall becomes a focus for community activities.
