## **The Zen Gateway Trust Annual Report y/e 2021** It’s been another strange year. The changes to how we’ve been living continue and it’s taking far longer than most of us suspected to return to any semblance of normality. In the meantime, the Zen Gateway keeps publishing new material and providing spiritual sustenance for our svrakas (hearers), the Sanskrit term in Buddhist scriptures for our present-day readers. Most importantly, we have also been writing and designing the new community site outlined at our last AGM. This has now been completed and our first online course is ready to roll. It’s essentially a Buddhist primer, going into the Mainstream Buddhism teachings in considerable depth. There are various spiritual practices included in each module, ranging from chanting to pilgrimage, and from breath-meditation to metta bhavana, meditation on loving kindness. If anyone would like to receive draft copies of the course prior to publication, please let me know. I would be happy to send these to you and look forward to all your comments. We have one last hurdle to overcome before we can go live with the community site, which is likely to delay our launch by another month. Bruce has been very helpful in our attempts to open a trust bank account that can process subscriptions and donations, but as he knows better than anyone, it has been very difficult to contact business managers at any UK banks during Covid and almost impossible to have a constructive conversation with them even after we are in touch. However, the good news is we’re just about to sign up with Barclays. We have lately been receiving advice from Bruce’s business manager at his Reading branch and have scheduled a meeting with the bank for 17th September, so it looks like there’s finally some light at the end of the tunnel. Many thanks, Bruce! We have recently expanded our editorial and design team. Alethea Creighton has become our regular line editor, casting her keen eye over all articles and newsletter copy. We also welcome aboard Dominic Kearne. He’s a committed member of the Zen Centre who joined us a few months ago as our website curator. He brings many valued skills, including a background in design and marketing. His role is to post up all materials on the Zen Gateway website as well as curate our YouTube channel & social media output. He has recently re-designed our homepage and passed along his plans to Sam Marcuson, our website designer, who will be putting them into action. Hopefully navigating the website and finding resources will soon become a lot easier. Sam has also been assigned the challenging task of constructing our community site and making sure all the interactive elements run smoothly. I also wanted to flag up the encouraging news that the SOAS website now lists The Zen Gateway as a reliable resource of information on Buddhism. Thanks again to Bruce for pointing out this gem! Finally, we’ve decided to resurrect the Zen Gateway’s advisory board. This was something that we started several years ago to foster a closer relationship between the Zen Gateway and the Zen Centre, principally Shobo-an. It was intended to offer representatives of the Zen Centre an opportunity to comment on our editorial content and offer ideas for material. Previously, Garry Gelade and Liam O’Brien were members along with Ven. Myokun. We have now invited two new members onto the board to replace them: Vanessa Wan, who looks after the Zen Centre’s social media platforms, and Sophie Walker, whom Myokun personally recommended. Some of you will know Sophie already through her husband Anish Kapoor. Sophie has recently published a lovely compendium book called The Japanese Garden. Both Vanessa and Sophie have agreed to become members of the advisory board and are looking forward to joining us. We hope to have our first meeting with them, together with Ven. Myokun, at the end of September. Perhaps we can also organize a friendly get together between the trustees and the new advisory board around the time of the AGM.
