RECRUITMENT OF TRUSTEES
The current serving Trustees are elected to serve on an annual basis. A new board of Trustees is selected from volunteers whose names are put forward to the members of the club for approval to be voted in as Trustees at an Annual General Meeting (AGM). The new trustees commence their duties on the 1[st] July of that year. Any change to the trustees is registered with the Charities Commission. The Board of Trustees is limited to between 3 and 12 members only.
The President, Secretary and Treasurer are automatically appointed Trustees after being elected to their positions at the club’s AGM.
Objectives and Activities
Lions clubs enable service-minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward. Clubs endeavour to improve health and well-being, strengthen communities, and support those in need through humanitarian services and grants that impact lives globally, and encourage peace and international understanding.
Objectives
The Objects of the Club are such purposes as are exclusively charitable in England & Wales, including in particular the advancement of citizenship by
-
promoting the principles of good citizenship;
-
encouraging members to take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community;
-
providing a forum for the open discussion of all matters of public interest; provided that partisan politics and sectarian religion shall not be debated by members;
-
encouraging service-minded people to serve their community without personal reward and encouraging the promotion of high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavours;
-
supporting youth to develop their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals;
-
promoting the Voluntary Sector for the public benefit by associating with local authorities in a common effort to advance education and provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation or other leisure time occupation to improve the conditions of life of people in local, national and international communities;
-
promoting volunteering;
-
the relief of poverty and the relief of those in need in particular by providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief;
-
the advancement of health or the saving of lives by preventing avoidable blindness, assisting disabled people to lead independent lives or helping to prevent or manage health issues;
-
promoting for the benefit of the public the conservation protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment and promoting community participation in healthy recreation.
The club’s normal activities involve holding fund raising events, attending, and supporting events in the town and local area with the purpose of raising funds for the club’s ‘Charity’ account, support others within the local, national and international community and to promote the Lions ethos.

The club held a successful Beer Festival in June 2022 preceded by a Jubilee tea party. One event, a sponsored fun cycle ride, was cancelled because support was withdrawn following the death of Queen Elizabeth. Another cycling event is planned for the coming Lions year.
Our biggest fundraising event was the 2022 Beer festival which raised over £12000 pounds. Our catering trailer food sales made profits of £2300. Firework night was on the weekend and with good weather. The firework display is an event provided for the town people to allow a safe and inexpensive way to participate in the tradition and it is not seen as a profit making event. However the high attendance provided a net profit of about £2000. Our Santa’s Sleigh collection raised £2700 (with gift aid).
We have worked with Barton Meridian rotary Club and the Friends of the Barton Line in sharing support and staffing of events and activities.
We were very grateful to Chris and Ann Hume for organising a successful club charter on Jan 21[st] 2023 following missing 2 balls – a consequence of the impact of the Covid epidemic.
– INCOME AND EXPENDITURE YEAR ENDING 30[th] JUNE 2022
Barton upon Humber Lions accounts were audited on 23rd September 2022 by Wrights, Certified Chartered Accountants and are available for viewing on the Charity Commission website.
These accounts are for the year July 2021 to June 2022
In December 2022 the club were faced with costs relating to car damage during an event. Payment was made from the Admin account (£2548.51). It was agreed by the trustees to allocate £2600 from advertising revenue to cover this cost. The trustees took advice from the district treasurer regarding this matter and the figure will be covered in next year’s accounts.
The Barton Lions are very grateful for donations made by the Town towards our public firework display (£2000) and helping substantially with the costs of the marquee in June 2022 (£2000) in which they hosted their Jubilee celebration event which was followed by the Lions’ Jubilee Tea Party.
Tesco have provided donations and grant funding in relation to the schools’ Art Project and a multitude and local businesses gave items and food for the Jubilee Tea Party. Barton Community Band have also given outstanding performances at our Jubilee, Oktoberfest and Beer festival events.
Our club is financially sound with the charity account standing at £27,740.20 and Admin at £2,068.89 on 12[th] April 2023.
