The Shed Wymondham Annual Report
In a former factory on Ayton Road is found The Shed, a place where members can pursue practical interests at leisure, practice skills and enjoy making and mending, in a friendly and sociable setting.
Previously for men only, The Shed Wymondham is now opening up to women, so the whole community can come together to teach and learn from each other. Part of The Men's Sheds movement, the Wymondham organisation is a registered charity run by volunteers, covering its costs either through donations, gifts, grants or fundraising initiatives. A board of Trustees have overall responsibility, and members help in the running of the project, which is open from 9am to 1pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
The two-storey building on Ayton Road is being restored by Shed members and is remarkably well equipped, thanks largely to donations from the community. Facilities downstairs include a craft area, kitchen, indoor meeting area, disability accessible toilet, a wood workshop and material store. Upstairs is a project assembly workshop, wood working machine shop, IT suite, music suite and watercolour studio.
The Shed gets involved with many community groups and projects within Wymondham and the surrounding areas, for example by making and selling hedgehog houses as part of the Wymondham Hedgehog Haven movement, constructing signage boards for Greening Wymondham, making book boxes for a little local libraries project and helping Robert Kett Court to assemble and erect a greenhouse. In doing so it also helps members meet like-minded people while enjoying crafts or practical work, as well as helping to reduce isolation and increase the feeling of personal fulfilment.

The Shed Wymondham Annual Report
Due to popular demand, the Shed Wymondham has recently started a Women’s Group, an initiative that had been delayed due to the Covid pandemic. It offers the same facilities and
resources as the Men’s group, but also incorporates other crafting and skills. Members can bring their own crafts to work on or learn new practical skills in one of the multi-function workshops, being trained in a variety of power tools. The aim long term is to also have a mixed day with both men and women working together, particularly on Wymondham community projects.
Testimonials from some of our members:
"The Shed has helped me make new friends and renew an interest in painting. Always a friendly welcome and happy faces to chat to." JB
"What a wonderful idea and lovely friendly people making such a difference to our lives. Really very excited to start on this adventure, learning so much and meeting people. The Shed is so well organised and has fantastic amenities." TW
"Going to the Shed has been fantastic for me as all my arts and crafts senses have been re-ignited and my mind is once again buzzing with the joys of ideas and projects I would like to do. The atmosphere is a caring and happy one where we not only learn new skills but share our skills with others too. "It's lovely to also meet people from all over and listen to their passionate crafting stories or merging our minds to come up with solutions to crafting problems someone else might have, be it fixing a broken picture frame or learning to use iPad painting apps. "Also, it’s not just about making things or doing things, some come to have a friendly chat and a tea or coffee, it’s great that you can go for the full time or just for an hour or two. You don’t even have to stick with one project, you could be giving digital painting lessons one

hour to a couple of women and then find yourself learning to follow a crochet pattern the next." AT
From the very beginning The Shed has been a place where I have met and become friends with many and varied people from all
walks of life. My involvement started after I helped a friend whose husband had died, and she wanted to donate his tools to a worthwhile cause, and as I heard of The Shed I suggested that would be a good place for the donation. From then on, I have seen it grow to the great institution it is now. Not only has it been place for good company and friendship but also a place where I have been able to impart some of my skills and have certainly acquired many more
I have also become aware of some of the difficulties some people have in their lives, and it has made me more tolerant hopefully understanding other folks needs." SL
"I joined The Shed in Wymondham over three years ago and still enjoy it as I did then. It's a great place to meet and make new friends, have a coffee in a relaxed atmosphere and learn and pass on new skills. I have my own workshop at home where I can do most of what I can do at the Shed but it can be quite lonely after a while. "Meeting at the Shed gives me lovely company and new ideas. We come and go as we will and either work on our own project, join in with a Shed project or just drop in for a coffee and a chat. We have some good talent within the membership so can get help and advice on a wide variety of subjects and/or find a friendly shoulder to cry on should we need it. All in all a lovely place to come to." RL
