Section D Achievements and performance
- Three editions of the Goldsworth News magazine were published during the year, in December 2022, and March and June 2003. Copies were delivered by volunteers to most properties in Goldsworth Park and are available on the website.
The range of topics covered in the magazine included:
-
“Retirement Views” from our recently retired Chair
-
“Introductory Greetings” from the new vicar at our local church
-
Reports on the activities of the Natural Goldsworth Park Project and articles about the wildlife on the lake
-
Articles about the Dragon Boat races on the lake, which support the local hospice
-
An informative article about the Basingstoke Canal, which runs alongside Goldsworth Park
The Facebook Group has over 1,600 members. It is a valuable method of reaching a wider audience in a timely manner and is well used by residents.
- The Trustees of GPCA met seven times between 01.07.22 and 30.06 23, and there were three public meetings, including the AGM. Attendance of residents of Goldsworth Park at public meetings remains disappointingly low, but we are loyally supported by our local councillors and county councillors.
Topics raised at meetings include:
-
Better lighting on the lake footpath
-
Use of the newly created BMX track
-
The illegal use of e-scooters on roads and footpaths
-
The removal of charity clothing-bins and Tetrapack bins from the supermarket car park
-
Poor parking and yellow lines

Section D Achievements and performance
-
Proposed use of the site of the local youth facility, which burned down some years ago
-
Trustees have good working relationships with the local councillors and council officers, who are invited to attend all public meetings. Many of the issues raised at meetings involve the Borough and County Councils, so the good relationships are invaluable in resolving problems. Councillors value GPCA as a channel of communication with residents and as a way of finding out what residents want from the councils.
-
The GPCA also has good relationships with a number of other local organisations, including the local church and Uniformed Groups and with commercial organisations such as the local shops (for donations for the Christmas tree) and the managing agents of the shopping centre over issues to do with safety of the playground equipment and cleanliness of the paving.
-
To enhance the community spirit:
Representatives of the GPCA attended the Remembrance Sunday Service and laid a Poppy Wreath.
As in previous years, the GPCA organised the siting of a Christmas tree in the shopping centre. The tree was sourced, free of charge, from a local area of common land, where volunteers work to clear the unwanted fir trees to restore the native heathland. Members of the Goldsworth Park Angling Club helped in the transportation and siting of the tree. Carols were led by members of the Goldsworth Park church, with the local supermarket providing the batteries for the lights.
For the second year running, the GPCA Calendar was produced, but, sadly, the sales did not cover the costs, and we were unable to make any donation from this venture to local charities.
Three Litter Picks were organised by the GPCA, and a significant amount of rubbish was collected.
-
The GPCA continues to help residents with problems relating to parking, overgrown trees and hedges, planning and other issues.
-
The GPCA continues to publicise the activities of other voluntary groups in the magazine, the Facebook Group and on the community notice board. GPCA supported the hospice’s annual Dragon Boat Race by managing an indoor tea and cakes stall.
-
During the period in question, the GPCA has continued to discuss the management of the Meadow and the woodland with Woking Council and with Thames Water, and we were instrumental in arranging a volunteers’ workday with an environmental officer from Thames Water to clear invasive cherry laurel from an area in the woodland that had been cleared to make a woodland path. This event was supported by a good number of local residents. We are still waiting to hear the outcome of the nomination for the Meadow and woodland to gain Site of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI) status.
-
The Natural Goldsworth Park (NGP) Facebook Group has a current membership of about 185.

Section E Financial review
Brief statement of the The Trustees have a policy of maintaining reserves at a level which
charity’s policy on reserves ensures that the GPCA’s core activities can continue in the long term. The level of reserves held takes into account expected future income levels and planned activities. As at 30[th] June 2023, The GPCA held reserves of £26,364. The GPCA may be facing a shortfall in income over the next 12 months and it is expected that a portion of the reserves will be needed to cover its core expenditure. The trustees review the level of reserves regularly and consider how these can be best utilised in order to meet the GPCA’s charitable objectives. Details of any funds materially None in deficit
