FOUNDERS THOUGHTS
As we wrap up another year, our hearts are once again filled with gratitude for the generosity and support we have received from every corner of the country. During these challenging times, we have seen a wealth of continued support but also sadly an increase in referrals and desperate need within our community.
Daughters of Salford, continue to be filled with compassion in uncertain times and are committed to being a practical crisis resource for those raising young families in this remarkable city.
Since our establishment in 2020, we have had the privilege of helping over 2,673 households by distributing more than 9,386 crisis packages. This accomplishment would not have been possible without our dedicated and inspiring volunteers, along with our outstanding trustees. I have invited one of our Trustees to share her thoughts as we reflect on the last year,
TRUSTEE - REFLECTIONS
It continues to be a real privilege to be a Trustee and to be involved with our Salford Baby Bank Project. The sad reality is that demand for our packages has increased year on year and we continue to meet genuine need at a critical moment. A new baby brings both joy and challenges for every family. It’s hard to think that on top of the challenges some families face the burden of homelessness or have worries about money and whether they can meet the needs of their baby. Its humbling to realise the significant difference our packages make to families at these times of crisis or difficulty; whether this is ensuring a baby has a safe place to sleep by providing a cot or Moses basket or other items essential for a babies day to day care. Our team of volunteers and fellow trustees are brilliant. We are all in agreement that all babies should have their needs met and that all families should have access to the essential items that allow them to care for themselves and their babies well. We know from our own experiences that if they have those items it will help provide the best start for their children. There have been many individuals, churches, groups and companies that understand both the need and our aims and have supported our work this year. It’s been great to join together with them and I believe it’s a great example of how different parts of our community have come together for babies in Salford and their families. PREVENTION OF HARM
When Daughters of Salford established it’s board of trustees they came together because they were all passionate about the experiences of women and their families within Salford.
The primary aim was and continues to be to prevent further harm to those families struggling in present times, whether that is through the cost of living crisis or homeless crisis. We are committed to ensure that ALL children and ALL families have access to crisis provisions and as a board of trustees, we are all committed to collaborating with partners who share our goal of addressing health inequalities for women and their families.
A Preventive Approach at Salford Baby Bank;
Our Baby bank project is clinically led by Angie who has been a Registered Midwife for over 25yrs. In accordance with Daughters primary aim we are mindful of the adverse childhood experiences that can affect health and well-being later in life. Salford Baby bank specifically address the first 1,001 days of a child's life. Providing essentials for pregnant women and babies in nappies is critical, and we strive to approach all referrals with a preventive lens. We triage all referrals with the desired outcome that we support families with the practical items they need to avoid risk by providing safety equipment, prevent avoidable health issues and restore dignity.
Our care packages are designed to be practical and tailored to meet the needs of families in crisis, helping to restore dignity. Our safety care packages ensure that every baby has the opportunity to be clean, fed and also sleep safely, no matter where they lay their head within our city.
