FOUNDERS THOUGHTS - AN EXTRA ORDINARY YEAR!
I have been so excited to see the launch of a 20 year vision for Daughters of Salford to be established here in my home City. I am incredibly proud of our contribution to Salford in our founding years activities and the launch of Salford Baby Bank. As the world responded to a pandemic unknown to our generation we launched our first long term project, Salford Baby Bank.
With hearts of gratitude to our board of Trustees and a sequence of miraculous events we were able to stock our stores and have supported 456 families in crisis with 1695 Hygiene, Food & safety Packages at an estimated cost of £33.424.50 which is incredible!
We could not have accomplished this amazing response to our respected NHS and Social Care Staff and their most vulnerable families, without the generosity of our residents in Salford and the commitment from our WONDERFUL Volunteers.
Daughters of Salford have partnered with over 30 inspirational organisations across the city and stood shoulder to shoulder to provide for the most vulnerable families living in deprivation. We have ensured that a response to the needs of parents has been heard and provisions made to ease the suffering. As the waves of the crisis persisted we too were able to continue to respond to referrals, meet the needs of our youngest Sons and Daughters, who often are too young to have a voice. We have provided their mums and dads the essentials so they have the provisions to thrive and sleep safe.
Our Guardian Angel volunteers who prepare the preloved and essential items has grown to 6 and we have 5 Guardian Angel youth volunteers donating their precious time of approximately 600 hours.
I am incredibly proud of our team and how we have responded to some of the injustice we have seen. I feel excited to see what we can achieve together for our community in the next year as Daughters of Salford grows!

Prevention of harm
Daughters of Salford are determined to work together with those who are committed to work in partnership to address the health inequalities for women and families within our city. We know that the prevention of harm is vital and the need to meet families with practical resources is growing as the pandemic exacerbates the health divide.
Salford Baby bank looks at referrals with prevention in mind. Our team is clinician led and attentive to the adverse childhood experiences which can impact health and well being in later life. The first 1001 days in a child's life are crucial and we aim to approach all referrals with eyes of prevention. All our Care Package provisions are practical and meet families needs in crisis and help to restore some dignity. Our Safety Care Packages ensure all babies can sleep safe wherever they lay to sleep within our City.

"Being busy & useful in lockdown has taken me back to my roots and my first volunteering role, again with families. Baby bank has been a lifesaver for me, something to focus on and less time to worry how I am feeling. A fantastic concept. Local people helping each other in really difficult times"
"Doreen makes a great brew, and it's been time to chat outside the house and have some company. Covid has been tough for everyone and I love delivering to our families and making a difference"

Raising Salford sons & daughters with hearts of Compassion
Innovation & Partnership in Salford
In February 2021 we were so blessed to be given use of the Kandy Kabin by Alex & Tom as they sell their commercial property. Their mum Sharon was a legend in Salford at the heart of the community and I believe she is looking down on us and smiling. It has meant space to organise and learn what it is to have a space to work out of and we are so grateful for the partnership and new friendship
Innovation & Partnership
in Oldham
In August 2020 we secured a partnership with Shared Health Foundation and NHS Properties, using the model of Salford Baby Bank into a social prescribing model in Oldham. Our partnership has a bespoke building and will launch Healthy Gems Hub in May 2021. Working alongside Primary Care our partnership
aims to develop the model so it can be replicated and strengthen its impact on health inequalities. Our heart is prevention for our most vulnerable families in our most deprived communities as we practically address crisis with prevention informed provisions and practices.

Daughters of Salford have agreed in line with good practice to work towards a reserve policy. We aim to ensure we have 3 months running costs by March 2022
What we have learned together...
We have learned that families in financial hardship do not just need nappies for babies. They need formula milk so that they do not need to water it down to last. They need weaning packages so that they can make the food bank donation go further. We have seen mothers using sanitary pads as they have run out of nappies and have no more hygiene essentials to bathe their babies and children. It is therefore essential to limit the risk of infection in our current situation.
We have been humbled by the gratitude of families below the safety net who look visibly relieved by the gifts we bring which do not look like charity and remove maybe a little of the shame. We have learned our community is full to the brim of generous and selfless individuals who reach into their own stores for provisions for those who can not at that point resource the basics for health and hygiene themselves.
We have learned to communicate when language was a barrier through friends and brothers at the mosque, who help those in desperate need, destitute within our city walls. We have learned as we have responded to the widows and orphans of this Covid generation, grief can be momentarily soothed by kindness and compassion.
We have learned to continually look with eyes of prevention to see where we can intervene, prevent hardship, and further reduce preventable harm and health inequalities. We learned safety equipment just became even further away from the grasp of many parents who found themselves expecting and delivering babies in a pandemic. With no work and caught in the homeless process, we learned that even here we can step in and avoid preventable suffering and pain by minimising the risks of accidental death and injury.
We have learned it is the simple things which remove shame and restore dignity - a clean bottom and face, formula feeds made correctly so optimum nutrition is achieved. A Moses basket, Cot or Pram, safe sleep practice if you please whilst a baby gate keeps our siblings safe on the stairs. Warm clothes, a coat and a blanket make cosy the moments when all the gas has run out. A simple 10 minute chat on the doorstep, reassures you your four walls do not define you, restoring hope and assuring you, one day this season of hardship will end.
