## Foreword

In 2023, the remarkable growth of our charity has been nothing short of extraordinary. The growth in membership has been explosive, reflecting a widespread recognition of the crucial role our organization plays in the lives of our membership and the wider community. Our expanded slate of programme offerings has allowed us to cater to the diverse needs of our members, providing them with a much needed support system.

What has truly set this year apart is the deepening connection we've cultivated with our members. The continued positive interactions between the leadership and the membership themselves has resulted in a massive uptick in their involvement, as evidenced by a significant increase in volunteering, the number of members that have become re-engaged, and the invaluable feedback they've generously shared. This dynamic engagement serves as a testament to the impact we're making, propelling us forward with confidence and enthusiasm into the years ahead.

I look forward to continuing the journey we have begun with Bassuah Legacy Foundation and changing lives of both our members and the community around us.

Dr. Christina Konadu CEO & Founder

## Our Mission

At the Bassuah Legacy Foundation, we believe in the power of community, resilience, and the strength that lies within every single-parent family. Our mission is rooted in the conviction that no one should face the challenges of single parenthood alone. We are dedicated to creating a supportive haven for single parents, where they can find not only assistance but also a network of understanding and encouragement.

Our charitable objectives are not just a list of goals; they are a commitment to building a community where single-parent families thrive, children flourish, and long-shelved dreams can become a reality.

## Our Approach to Effecting Change

Improving the everyday life of a single parent can be daunting; so much so that many boroughs, organisations, and communities struggle to know where to begin. After conducting thorough research we identified five key areas in which we have focused since our founding in 2019.

## AIMS & OBJECTIVES

## RAISE AWARENESS

Raising awareness of single parenting to combat the stigma associated with being from a single parent household.

## IMPROVE MENTAL & PHYSICAL HEALTH

Encourage single parents and their dependants to become proactive in taking care of their mental and physical health.

## BUILD CONFIDENCE

Through our various support programmes we aim to build the confidence of single parents and their dependents.

## MOTIVATE & INSPIRE ROLE MODELS

Recognising efforts and achievements through our various events and in particular a yearly awards event.

## BUILD A SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY

We promote social inclusion by integrating single parents within the community and building a reliable network of resources.

## Our Strategy 2023 - 2027

At BLF, we understand how important it is to keep your eye on the future and the ways in which you can change it. In 2022 we set out a 5-year plan that acts as a road map for change. It gave us measurable KPI’s that keep us focused while delivering on the promises we make to our membership daily.

Launched 1st January 2023, we are happy to report that we have surpassed all of our KPI goals for Year 1, which is explored further on page 11.

Excited parents, children, and volunteers smiled as the day became a bright and sunny one. Laughter sounded along the shoreline as parents relaxed, exchanged stories, and formed a close-knit bond while their children revelled in the sun, waves, and newfound friendships. The free trip not only provided a welcome escape but also fostered a supportive network, creating cherished memories for both parents and children alike.

## General Services

While supporting our members through activities, events, and programmes is much appreciated, we know the need for more traditional support exists. Many unexpected things arise when lone parenting and we strive to be the sounding board, partner, and support our members need when navigating through life's trials, challenges and victories.

We fulfill this need through our General Services: **Housing Assistance, Employment Support, Volunteering, Member Advocacy, Shop Vouchers** and **Essential Shopping** .

In December 2023, we had a remarkable Essential Shopping event. BLF takes their membership to a grocery store and pays for a portion of their shopping at the till. This allows parents to select exactly what their family needs that month, catering to diverse food preferences, allergies, and religious dietary restrictions.

_“_

_I love it [essential shopping]. It really is so generous and exactly what I need this time of year, plus, the members are so friendly everytime I go I truly feel like I’m part of a loving, caring community._

## Outreach Success & Shortfalls

Despite experiencing a substantial increase in membership, we recognize the evolving communication landscape and the need to adapt to better connect with our members. It has become evident that traditional communication methods, such as email, may not be as effective as they once were, with members often not checking their emails regularly. In response to this shift, we are actively exploring alternative pathways to disseminate information and engage with our community. Whether it be through innovative digital platforms, social media channels, or our member-opted in WhatsApp group.

This exploration marks a pivotal moment for us as we strive to stay attuned to the evolving preferences of our diverse membership, ensuring that our messages arrive to our members in a timely manner that allows them to make any needed arrangement to attend and engage with our organisation.

_2023 Bassuah Legacy Foundation Impact Report_ 25

## Looking Forward

After learning a lot in 2023, BLF used the information to keep what worked and lose what didn't. In 2024 we aim to increase engagement and continue to build a sustainable charity that can grow with it’s membership.

_2023 Bassuah Legacy Foundation Impact Report_ 26

## 2024 Preparedness

As we approach 2024, our charity stands well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. With our newly updated data collection strategy we’re moving forward informed and data-backed; consistently consulting the feedback given to us directly from the membership allowing it to inform our decision making - being flexible as funding is received.

Our budget and schedule for 2024 were set in Q3-2023; and procedures to ensure efficient and effective communication between the organisation and the membership are underway.

Moreover, we take pride in the development and ongoing cultivation of our leadership team. This team will continue to serve as the driving force behind the realization of our ambitious five-year plan.

As we transition into the second year of this journey, our focus remains steadfast on fostering growth and inclusivity. We eagerly anticipate expanding our membership while fostering a sense of strength and community. Embracing our **five aims & objectives** , we are dedicated to guiding and assisting our members in becoming the best versions of themselves. By keeping our primary objectives in mind, maintaining

We look forward to working alongside our members to create a lasting impact in our membership and wider community.

## Future Plans

## SERVICES

In 2023, our charity undertook a profound journey of understanding, listening closely to the needs of our community. The invaluable insights gleaned have paved the way for new initiatives in 2024.

Responding to the resounding desire for improved well-being, we are excited to introduce a **healthy eating programme** in January 2024, ensuring that families in our community possess the knowledge to make informed dietary choices; which feeds directly into our continuing “Essential Shopping” service. Building on the importance of connection, **our focus is on incorporating activities that foster meaningful conversations and strengthening the bonds within our community** .

Furthermore, recognizing the need for constructive engagement among teenagers, we are looking to partnering with other charities that provide a platform for teens to join together, learn, and grow.

As we transition into the new year, our commitment is unwavering, guided by the lessons of 2023 to create impactful and lasting positive change for those we serve.

## ORGANISATIONAL

In charting our course for the future, we are dedicated to fortifying the organizational backbone that supports our membership. Recognizing the importance of sustainable growth, **we plan to enhance our organizational structure, ensuring it aligns seamlessly with the evolving needs of our community** .

Embracing a holistic approach, we aim to foster a foundation that not only accommodates the increasing demands for our services but also **cultivates an environment of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement** . Through strategic planning and a keen focus on scalability, we aspire to build a sustainable growth model that **empowers our charity to expand its reach, deepen its impact, and stand resilient** in the face of future challenges.

by the Charily Commission under section 145(5){bl of the 2011 Acl; and
to stale whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance wtth the general Direclions given by
the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records
kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records.
It also includes consideration of any unusual rtems or disclosures in the accounts,
and seeking explanations from you as trustees conceming any such matters. The
procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an
audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a
'true and fair view, and the report is limiled to those matters set out in the statement
below.
Independent examiner's report
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to
my attention in connection with the examination. (other than that disclosed below)
which gives me cause to believe that in any material respect:
The accounting records were not kept in accordan￿ with the section 130 of
the Charities Act,. or
The accounts did not accord with the accounting records. or
The accounts did not comply wtth the applicable requiremenls conceming the
form and content of the accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports)
Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the account give a 'true and
fair, which is not a matter a matter considered as part of the independent
examination.
I have no concems and have come across no other matter in connection with the
examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a
