## **Rhondda Lawn Tennis Club**

## **Chairman’s Address on behalf of Trustees, 2023**

Time is flying by. We have witnessed a period in recent years when RLTC has been transformed. The dilapidated shack has been upgraded to a venue which is the envy of many visitors. The membership of the Club has risen to almost 200, which is almost beyond belief when one considers that it was less than 30 a few years ago.

One must remember the saying, “There’s no gain without pain!”. Indeed, the amount of effort that has been made by some members, particularly most of the committee, has been immense.

The Club became registered as a Charitable Incorporate Organisation, a CIO, the object of which is the promotion of community participation in healthy recreation, in particular, by presenting facilities for playing tennis in Rhondda Cynon Tâf (and surrounding areas) for the public benefit, including developing the capacity, skills and confidence of children, young people and/disabled, including adults who are socially disadvantaged. In just a few words, the aim of the Club is to be wholly inclusive.

The interest in playing has increased and the Club House is developing as a possible venue for social gatherings. It is heartening to see so many children signing up for coaching, and on that note, I must say how impressed I am with the interaction that our coaches, Mike, Callum and Mansoor, have with the youngsters and adults. Whenever I’ve been present at coaching sessions, I’ve been impressed by the coaches’ delivery and the response of those being coached, in all age groups. If only the warm atmosphere created could also have been added to by the weather!

As mentioned earlier, a considerable amount of work has been carried out by the committee, whether in an administrative, advisory or practical manner. The time and

effort given has been so valuable to the Club. However, I am confident that you will all agree that the contribution of our Treasurer / Membership Secretary has been beyond belief! The rest of us on the committee are aware of the research he has carried out regarding the availability of grants, the personal contacts he has made with representatives / employees of grant bodies and the local authority, which have resulted in the donations which have paid for and are still paying for the Clubhouse restoration.

It was no great surprise, consequently, that he was named as the Tennis Wales 2023 Volunteer of the Year for the leadership he has shown, the fundraising work he has carried out and the countless hours he has given to the work, day and night.

On behalf of the Club, I can only say a huge thank you for all of John’s contributions. Thanks also to those who have donated kitchen items and financially towards the cost of refurbishing the Club. Thanks to those who have obtained Food Hygiene Certificates. One mustn’t forget those who have donated their time and labour. THANK YOU. Long may it continue.

My hope for the future is that people from the wider community will become aware of what the Club has to offer, that those interested in playing in Men’s, Ladies and mixed matches will increase, and that plans which include indoor courts will materialise.
