How the Charity is constituted** The Anna Phillips Foundation is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). ## 7. **Trustee Selection Methods** Seeking to ensure the highest standards of governance, best practice and relevant knowledge and skills, together with a compassionate and ethical approach, The Anna Phillips Foundation adopts a patient approach in finding new Trustees who are both passionate about its work and have the highest integrity. As the Board of Trustees currently appoints new Members, we continue to develop a more structured and focused approach to recruitment of new Trustees, in addition to considering applicants on the basis of qualified third party recommendation. ## 8. **How new Trustees are Inducted and trained** The Foundation’s policy is to provide all new Trustees with a copy of its Constitution together with the most recent copy of the Trustees’ Annual Report and Financial Statements. The Charity is also currently exploring the benefits of enrolling new Trustees on formal training programmes provided by umbrella resource organisations in the charity sector. ## 9. **Additional information:** The Charity has robust safeguarding policies and is committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all, co-operating with the relevant statutory agencies. The monetary amount of this in-kind support is calculated using the number of hours given and the real living wage rate prevailing at 30 April in the financial year to 30 September. Summary of the Objects of the Charity as set out in its Constitution** The Objects of the CIO are, for the public benefit, to promote and protect good health of persons suffering from trauma related mental illness, and assist in the treatment and care of such persons by: - enabling recovery and wellbeing by facilitating opportunities for “mindfulness”, green care and related social activities. - collaborating with researchers to understand how the natural and social environment could improve mental health of trauma survivors, the useful results of which will be published. - raising public awareness of the social causes of mental illness, suicide, self-harm and how the use of the natural environment can be beneficial to mental health. 7 The Anna Phillips Foundation Registered Charity Number 1185535 . ## 11. **Summary of Main Activities carried out for the public benefit** a) The charity supports a range of therapies in nature which are beneficial to good, sustainable long term health and wellbeing. We continue to develop the location in North Wales for the above wellbeing activities, by enhancing the suitability and safety of the physical environment for people who seek optimal opportunities to secure a recovery path for their trauma related mental health challenges. We achieve this sensitively both for the individual and for an enriched biodiversity. The charity continues its partnerships and collaboration with specific strategic organisations to benefit clients. We seek a meaningful national benchmark for a care pathway to help people challenged by traumatic experiences. b) The charity builds on its meaningful relationships with key researchers in traumatic stress, and observes the benefits of nature in addressing trauma related mental health challenges. We look to the most appropriate ways of measuring a person’s progress towards recovery and long term wellbeing. This should help enhance the evidence base in a practical way. c) We continue to advocate for a better public understanding of the social and relational causes of self-harm and suicide, and of mental illness in general, through various social media and conferences by sharing relevant ideas on how to address this huge societal challenge, using nature as a reference. We work with others to address the growing concerns around the continual use of descriptors such as “personality disorders” and their attribution to victims of trauma including domestic abuse and violence, a problem which disproportionally impacts children and women. 8 The Anna Phillips Foundation Registered Charity Number 1185535 . In this respect we are involved in the work of the National Centre for Suicide Prevention and Self-Harm Research, based in Swansea. We look forward to continuing our close work with the National Centre for the long term general public good. 9 The Anna Phillips Foundation Registered Charity Number 1185535 . ## **Activities, Achievements and Performance** ## 12. **Executive Summary** In the course of the period of this Annual Report the Foundation made further progress in enhancing the biodiversity of its woodland location in north Wales, a core long term contributor to the wellness aims set out in its Objects. ## **Biodiversity, Renewable Energy, Tree and Orchard Planting** We continue to enhance the biodiversity of the woodlands at Ty Anna. We are grateful for the interest and efforts of volunteers with knowledge and expertise in this area who helped with ongoing care and maintenance of our location, including conservation of water resources. The orchard, comprising of an interesting array of trees of Welsh provenance, continues to advance and we continue to seek guidance to optimise its balance with surrounding trees for the benefit of clients visiting for green care and mindfulness activities. The solar array continues to contribute to our long term renewable energy commitment, and the charity exports surplus electricity generated to the national grid. Wood that is not suitable for woodcraft or for use as mulch is used as fuel. Where appropriate we are also accumulating different wood which will go to producing woodcrafts (including beech, oak, hawthorn, cherry, yew and lime). 10 The Anna Phillips Foundation Registered Charity Number 1185535 . ## **Corporate, Governance, Safeguarding, Policy reviews** We researched the benefits of charity corporate partnerships by seeking guidance from a specialist consultant in this field. This included looking at various types of partnership for income generation, and consideration of the location of the potential partner. The charity looked into the longer term governance challenges and opportunities through a number of meetings with leaders of long established third sector organisations in Wales. Much of the good practice gained with the passage of time was shared with us and is applicable and relevant to the foundation going forward. While the charity does not require an audit and so does not fall into the category of needing a Risk Management Report, following some research into this aspect of governance, we remain constantly aware and vigilant of the operational factors which contribute to this requirement. ## **Mental health activities with partner organisations (highlights)** A team of trained sexual assault professionals from Amethyst visited our location and met with all the trustees. They were very impressed with the natural atmosphere and could see many benefits of bringing clients to visit as part of their recovery pathway from traumatic stress. Two APF trustees attended Wales Mental Health and Wellbeing Conference during the year. Organised by Practice Solutions Cymru, the conference in Llandudno offered very insightful presentations given on some innovative approaches such as the concept of a Recovery College. These colleges are aimed at people struggling with a range of trauma-based challenges either after a prolonged period of traumatic stress or after experiencing a particular incident which 11 The Anna Phillips Foundation Registered Charity Number 1185535 . has left a deep impact on them. The idea would be to have a Recovery College in each of South and North Wales. Two trustees contributed to the Traumatic Stress (North) Wales (TSW) North Wales conference at Theatre Clwyd, Mold during the year. Participants were clinical, research and care professionals from the NHS, care sector, justice system and third sector. A range of different, novel participatory activities worked very well, including sessions by the WNO who engaged plenary singing sessions as a means of tackling different forms and degrees of traumatic stress. Excellent presentations made by people with lived experience of traumatic stress. ## **Research collaborations** One APF trustee is a member of the Public Advisory Group (PAG) on Traumatic Stress at the National Centre for Mental Health (Wales). Two trustees are members of the PAG on Prolonged Grief. In this way we have input into the latest research on how to manage the challenges of traumatic stress, and of bereavement and prolonged grief in the UK, both of which carry a significant economic and cultural burden. An APF trustee is a co-author in a feasibility randomly controlled trial study into the use of a guided digital app for use by people who have prolonged grief disorder (PGD). This is a project lead by researchers at the NCMH at Cardiff University. Work is progressing in the trial and in due course papers will be published later in 2026. During the period of this report we very much welcome the early work of the National Centre for Suicide Prevention and Self-Harm Research (based at Swansea University, Wales). Statement of the Charity’s Policy on Reserves** As the charity does not have significant reserves, all liquid assets are in the form of a current bank account. ## **14.
