Charity’s purpose

We aim to boost confidence and esteem by providing free head coverings to anyone suffering hair loss as a result of undergoing treatment for cancer. We also support Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Weston Park Cancer Treatment Centre through providing items to support cancer sufferers in their care. We are a small caring charity that is based in South Yorkshire, and we work with hospitals, cancer support groups and individuals. Our mission is to continue the work of Laura Powell, our Little Warrior.

Big C little Warrior was registered as a charity on 25 Sep 2019 our charitable objective is formally stated as:

TO PROMOTE HEALTH AND TO RELIEVE THOSE SUFFERING FROM OR AFFECTED BY CANCER, IN PARTICULAR BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY, IN YORKSHIRE, BY THE PROVISION OF FREE BEAUTY TREATMENTS

Fundraising Activities

During the year two of the charity’s main sources of income were donations to the charity and the sale of creative items by the charity.

Big C Little Warrior would like to thank the many supporters who have made donations to support the charity’s work. We have been touched by the large number of donations made and these all have a big impact on the charitiable work that can be done by BCLW.

The charity also benefitted this year from income of around £2,000 in relation to the sale of Christmas Cards, Thank You cards, Paintings, Knitted items and Knitting Patterns. We would like to thank everyone involved in raising these funds. In particular we would like to thank our very talented and creative artist Carol Connelly who’s inspiration and hard work has made it possible for the charity to benefit from this income.

Barnet Fundraising Event

BCLW would like to thank everyone that supported the fundraising event held in December 2022. We are always very touched by the immense support that the charity receives and the event raised over £2,600. Our guests were entertained by two amazing bands who donated their time, and we would like to thank Little Wing and The Love Bandits. We also held a successful auction and we would like to thank everyone who donated prizes and also those who participated in the auction.

Activities of the Charity

Big C Little Warrior has continued to look to fulfil its charitable objectives in two ways.

The charity runs a scheme which provides free headcoverings to patients suffering hair loss as as a result of cancer treatment and this sevice has received positive feedback.

The charity has continued to distribute gift bags to cancer patients using the Firefly Transport service for patients travelling to hospital, distributing 80 bags.

Big C Little Warrior also arranges for 5 annual gift drops to the childrens cancer wards, delivering gift bags, comfort items (such as warm socks and hooded blankets), coffee vouchers and craft kits to the children’s ward at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and we also benefit young cancer sufferers at Weston Park Cancer Care Centre.

Headscarves and Head Coverings

During the year 11 people benefitted from the new scheme to provide headcoverings to patients suffering from cancer. We have had very positive feedback on this scheme and in some cases the confidence of the recipient has been greatly improved as a result. The generous contributions to the charity have enable us to provide the beautiful headcoverings crafted by Headscarves by Ciara.

Gift Bags and Support Items for Scheffield Children’s Hospital

During the year almost £7,500 was spent on Gift Bags and comfort items for Sheffield Children’s Hospital and also Weston Park Cancer Care Centre. We work closely with Sheffield Childrens Hosital to provide the items that will have the biggest impact for the patients. In particular warm blankets and hooded blankets have provided comfort, and also coffee vouchers have been provided allowing a little ‘me time’ when times are very difficult. Annually around 200 Gift Bags are distributed in the hospitals.

Christmas Gift Bags

Big C Little Warrior continued to fulfilling our charitable objectives of providing support to those being treated for cancer. 80 Gift bags were distributed at Christmas in partnership with the Firefly charity. We would like to thank local schoolchildren who helped to pack these giftbags for the patients to receive.

The trustees have prepared group accounts in accordance with section 398 of the Companies Act 2006 and section 138 of the Charities Act 2011. These accounts are prepared in accordance with the special provisions of Part 15 of the Companies Act relating to small companies and constitute the annual accounts required by the Companies Act 2006 and are for circulation to members of the company.

Notes on the accounts

1. Accounting Policies

2. a. Basis of accounting: The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard 102 (effective January 2015) and with the Accounting and Reporting by: Statement of Recommended Practice (FRS 102) (issued in January 2015).

3. b. Going concern: The financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis. The company's activities are dependent upon the continued support of its funders.

4. c. Cash flow statement: The trustees have taken advantage of the exemption in Financial Reporting Standard No. 1 (revised) from including a cash flow statement in the financial statement on the grounds that the charity is small.

5. d. Taxation: The company is a registered charity, and its activities are not subject to taxation.

6. Donations Received: The charity is grateful to the kind donations received as one-off donations from individuals and businesses.

7. Trading Activities: The charity has received £656 from the sale of charity Christmas cards and Thank You cards, £200 from the sale of knitted items, £50 from the sale of paintings and £890 from the sale of knitting patterns.

1. Expenditure on charitable activities for the period was £11,563.02. This bulk of this represents the cost of purchasing items to fill charitable gift bags and provide other items of comfort such as blankets, warm items of clothing and coffee vouchers. Expenditure on Headscarves and headcoverings for patients suffering from cancer totalled £927.53.

Safeguarding

The nature of the support offered by Big C little warrior requires our charity to work with both children and vulnerable adults. Our charity has established a safeguarding policy and we have appointed a safeguarding officer. We take our responsibilities and obligations with respect to safeguarding seriously and have safeguarding as a standing agenda item at every trustee’s meeting.

All trustees have valid DBS checks in place and all trustees have undergone both adult and child safeguarding training.
