Trustees Annual Report and Financial Statements

Registered Charity 1185501

For the period 25 Sep 2019 to 31 Oct 2020

Charity’s purpose

We boost confidence and esteem by providing free beauty and grooming treatments to anyone undergoing treatment for cancer. We are a small caring charity that is based in South Yorkshire, and we work in hospitals, homes and hospices in the surrounding area. Our mission is to continue the work of Laura Powell, our Little Warrior.

Big C little Warrior was registered as a charity on 25 Sep 2019 our charitable objective is formally stated as

TO PROMOTE HEALTH AND TO RELIEVE THOSE SUFFERING FROM OR AFFECTED BY CANCER, IN PARTICULAR BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY, IN YORKSHIRE, BY THE PROVISION OF FREE BEAUTY TREATMENTS

Despite the unprecedented challenges presented by the covid 19 global pandemic the charity has made an excellent start. In this section we outline our activities to date and describe the unique challenges Covid19 has presented.

Coronavirus

The charitable objective of providing beauty treatments to those affected by cancer requires close contact with patients who often have weakened immune systems. As coronavirus spread across the country the staff at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and other locations that we intended to provide services, wisely decided to limit access.

The trustees of Big C Little Warrior understand and respects the hospital’s decision and are happy to defer the treatment of patients in-line with our charitable objectives until it is completely safe to do so.

Given that our intended activities were precluded by the covid restrictions Big C Little Warrior has looked to fulfil its charitable objectives in a socially distanced manner through the distribution of gift bags containing make-up and beauty related products.

The trustees look forward to the charity resuming face to face beauty treatment activities once the threat of coronavirus has passed.

Fundraising Activities

As a newly established charity, our initial aim has been to run fundraising events to raise the funds required to start our services.

Despite the restrictions of lock-down measures our supporters have given generously to our charity. The trustees wish to thank all those who have given money and time in support of our objectives.

London Social Event

On the 30[th] of November, Big C Little Warrior hosted a charity fundraising event at Arkley golf course, North London. The trustees would like to thank all those who attended and gave generously of their time and money. In particular, we would like to thank our entertainers, Chris Copping and ‘Little Wing’, funny man Steve Craggs and our young magician Jack Mabon. After expenses, the event raised £5,131 and provided an excellent kick start to our fundraising campaign.

One stop shop

The trustees would like to thank the staff of the King Edward road One Stop Shop, Balby. The small shop raised £400 to help our charity get our activities underway.

Christmas cards

The trustees would like to thank all those who purchased our charity Christmas cards and in particular we would like to thank our talented artists (Annie Trotman, Judith Echlin and Carol Connelly) who generously donated their art-work to the charity.

Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards 2019

The trustees and all those connected with the Big C Little Warrior charity were proud when Laura was awarded the Yorkshire Children of Courage award. The event was sponsored by St James’ Place who made a generous donation to our charity.

Gift Bags

Whilst coronavirus prevented us from working on hospital wards it certainly didn’t prevent us form fulfilling our charitable objectives of providing support to those being treated for cancer. Gift bags were distributed in August 2020 and again at Christmas in partnership with the Firefly charity.

Safeguarding

The nature of the support offered by Big C little warrior requires our charity to work with both children and vulnerable adults. Our charity has established a safeguarding policy and we have appointed a safeguarding officer. We take our responsibilities and obligations with respect to safeguarding seriously and have safeguarding as a standing agenda item at every trustee’s meeting.

All trustees and volunteers involved with charity business have valid DBS checks in place and all trustees have undergone both adult and child safeguarding training.
