Chair’s Report
Welcome to our third annual report since we became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in September 2019. This year has proved to be an interesting year for us as we have expanded our team from 8 to 11. We are fortunate to be able to continue to provide services throughout the year.
Our Board has seen a number of changes where Ingrid Abercrombie, Diane Stratulis and Sarah Tupling all resigned from the Board at different times in the year. I would like to thank them for their hard work and commitment they have given to Deaf-initely Women.
I am very proud of the work that all staff have done and continue to achieve. We continue to support deaf women through a range of gender specific services that are not available elsewhere in the UK. We listen to them and their struggles for acceptance and respect in society. We continue to offer a range of services in getting our organisation known within the deaf and hearing worlds in our fight for acceptance and gaining rights as deaf women.
I am sorry to see Janet Mellor leaving us last year for personal reasons but pleased that she remains in contact with us.
Following Janet’s departure, we also saw Molly O’Brien leaving us for a new job in the disability research sector. Thank you Janet and Molly for your hard work and support.
I wish them both all the best for the future.
I would like to welcome Becky Daykin and Veronica Stewart who joined us in October 2021 working on the Social Connector project in ensuring isolated deaf women are getting support across Derby and Derbyshire. They have recruited and trained 11 deaf women as social connectors – all working together in ensuring no deaf woman is left isolated.
Sarah Tupling also joined us as a Peer Coach working for Derby Deaf Living Well service ensuring that many deaf women are getting support in managing their mental health. Welcome Sarah!
I would like to thank all volunteers for their support in the past 12 months. All have helped out in our activities. Also, thanks to all Board members for their hard work, commitment and unwavering support. I would also like to thank all staff and volunteers for their support in striving to achieve outcomes and outputs for our peers.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
YEAR ENDED JANUARY 31[st] 2022
1.5 Resources expended
All expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all costs relating to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with use of the resources. Fund-raising costs are those incurred in seeking voluntary contributions and do not include the costs of disseminating information in the support of the charitable activities.
1.6 Debtors
Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discounts offered. Prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due.
1.7 Cash and cash equivalents
Cash and cash equivalents include cash in hand, deposits held at call with banks, other shortterm liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings in current liabilities.
1.8 Creditors and provisions
Creditors and provisions are recognised where the group has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and provisions are normally recognised at their settlement amount after allowing for any trade discounts due.
1.9 Financial instruments
The group has financial assets and financial liabilities of a kind that qualify as basic financial instruments. Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at transaction value and subsequently measured at their settlement value.
Derecognition of financial liabilities
Financial liabilities are derecognised when the group’s contractual obligations expire or are discharged or cancelled.
1.10 Employee benefits
The cost of any unused holiday entitlement is recognised in the year in which the employee’s services are received.
Termination benefits are recognised immediately as an expense when the group is demonstrably committed to terminate the employment of an employee or to provide termination benefits.
1.11 Taxation
The group is exempt from tax on income and gains falling with section 505 of the Taxes Act 1988 or section 252 of the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 to the extent that these are applied to its charitable objects.
