To promote national and international conflict resolution and reconciliation for the public benefit with a view to relieving suffering, poverty and distress and building and maintaining social cohesion and trust within and between communities by

  1. Investigating and identifying probable causes of the conflict; 2. Examining probable solutions to the conflict through participatory research into relevant economic and social issues;

  2. Mediating with parties to the conflict and others together to discuss such

research and possible solutions enabling them to build relationships of trust; 4. Recommending to the international community and parties involved the measures which, in the Trustees’ opinion, are likely to result in the resolution or prevention of the conflict or the reduction of any humanitarian crisis that may ensue from the conflict;

  1. Publishing reports for the public benefit on the causes and recommended solutions of particular conflicts;

  2. Delivering services which address the charitable needs of those affected by conflict: provided that all activities shall be balanced and shall maintain or enhance the CIO’s commitment to remaining impartial.

In view of the lack of understanding of the real causes behind conflicts, the Trustees will organise Conferences, Debates, Lectures, Research, and Workshops on all aspects of promoting World Peace, especially:

  1. Matters covered or alluded to in the charity’s declared objectives.

  2. Issues at global, international, and national levels such as tensions between communities.

  3. Relevant factors including economic, social, cultural, religious and spiritual. How do these hinder or support peace? And how does peace, or absence of peace, enhance or diminish public benefit?

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

  1. Factors relating primarily to women, who are particular victims of conflict but are not properly represented in peace processes and decision making. We will include them at all levels (see the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 of Oct 2000).

  2. Environmental issues where the many threats to our fragile ecosystem are also threats to peace.

In planning these activities the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

Conferences

Promoting World Peace Can China and India point the way to promote global peace? Conference 29[th] November 2025 St James Church, Woodley, Reading RG5 3LH

We hosted a conference and discussion exploring why and how China and India can work together to promote global peace . When we consider their immense size and influence, we believe that peaceful coexistence between them could be vital for global stability and prosperity. What are the implications for us in the rest of the world? How can we engage with this process and encourage peace for ourselves? 52 attended in person and 8 online. “We need to find ways to peace,” said Dr Prem Sharma OBE, in his welcome address as Chairman. He spoke of the challenge to our leaders and to all of us.

The programme continued with a greeting from the local MP, Yuan Yang MP. Then Counsellor Yongpeng Mu from the Embassy of China spoke about China’s relationship with India. Martin Palmer outlined their historical relationship in philosophy, literature and art. Former ambassador Krishna Rajan raised questions for China and Vivaan Rajul suggested ways for India and China to work together peacefully. Prof Yinshan Tang outlined the trajectory that China and India need; with their implications for us today. Councillor Rob Comber, Deputy Mayor of Wokingham Borough, followed by Councillor Shahid Younis, reflected on the theme, with its implications for us. This led to a detailed discussion by the whole group. Lord Sharma spoke about the key dimension of sustainability and Councillor Stephen Newton closed with thoughts on the local implications. Rev Laurence Smith, Vicar of St James, added further closing thoughts on peace. Dr Sharma’s words on peace remained with us: “Peace is not something just to speak about; it is something to be lived. Being a person of peace is an active calling, where we deliberately choose to clothe ourselves with Compassion, Kindness, Humility, Gentleness and Patience . We need God’s help to change us.”

Research

We continued to develop the Magna Carta World Peace Index – a project of collaboration between Magna Carta World Peace and Sustainability Foundation and Henley Business School, University of Reading.
