## **Administrative Information:** 

The Parish of All Saints Darfield is part of the Wath Deanery and Diocese of Sheffield within the Church of England. 

All Saints Church, Darfield is situated in Church Street, Darfield, Barnsley, S73 9JX. Listed Grade I St Michael and all Angels Church is situated in Church Street, Great Houghton, S72 0BL. Listed Grade II* 

The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of Darfield All Saints [ **The PCC** ] is a Registered Charity with registration Number **1185316.** 

The PCC has responsibility for maintenance of the fabric and environs of these Listed buildings. It also has maintenance responsibilities for the Rectory Cottage and Church Hall, both situated in Church Street, Darfield, S73 9JX. 

The parish is part of the Wath2 Mission Area with the Parishes of Ardsley, Thurnscoe, Bilham, Barnburgh with Melton on the Hill, and Adwick upon Dearne.

## **Aim and Purpose:** 

Darfield All Saints’ PCC is a body corporate (PCC Powers Measure 1956, Church Representation Rules 2020) and a charity registered with the Charity Commissioners [1185316]. 

The PCC has the responsibility of co-operating with the Incumbent to promote the ecclesiastical parish mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. 

## **Objectives and Activities:** 

## **We aim to be a visible spiritual presence in our communities as we strive to make Jesus known to all.** 

The PCC is committed to enabling as many people as possible to come to faith and become members of a worshipping community. The PCC maintains an overview of worship throughout the parish to ensure that services and activities meet the needs of the many groups within the parish. 

It attempts to put faith into practice through prayer, Scripture, music and sacrament and to allow each individual’s knowledge of and trust in Jesus to develop. The PCC supports societies and individuals involved in missionary, pastoral and outreach work within the parish and beyond. 

## **Structure, Governance and Management** 

The full PCC meets up to 12 times per year to make decisions of general concern and importance to the Parish including deciding how the PCC funds are collected and spent. 

The method of appointment of PCC Members is set out in the Church Representation Rules 2020. 

All eligible church attendees are encouraged to register on the Electoral Roll and to stand for election to the PCC and to other elected offices. 

_Responsibility for day to day running of St Michael’s Great Houghton is delegated by the PCC to their District Church Council [DCC] elected at their own Annual District Church Meeting. A number of DCC members are additionally members of the PCC_ 

Usually from within its membership, the PCC appoints a Vice Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. The PCC has power to co-opt additional members, generally with full voting rights. 

The PCC also appoints a Standing Committee which has delegated powers to make decisions on urgent matters between PCC meetings. 

If the Parish does not have an incumbent for the time being, the PCC Vice-Chairman takes over as Chairman of the PCC and the PCC may nominate a further individual to deputise. The PCC may also create sub committees for specific purposes which can make recommendations to the PCC. Membership of these committees may include non-PCC members.

## Activities of the Parochial Church Council, Achievements and Performance 

The PCC met regularly during 2022 with a mixture of face-to face and Zoom meetings. Some meetings included presentations and activities linked with LYCIG – Leading your Church into Growth 

The pattern of regular services across the Parish was maintained with a celebration of Holy Communion once a fortnight in each of our two churches with an additional, generally lay-led, service held in All Saints on the alternate Sundays. Said Holy Communion Services were held on Ash Wednesday, Ascension Day and All Saints Day using the Book of Common Prayer. The pattern of Morning and Evening prayer on Facebook continued. The Café style monthly service, ‘The Well’ continued throughout the year in the Church Hall. 

Rev Fiona Kouble, Vicar of Ardsley was licenced as Oversight Minister within the Wath2 Mission Area and Priest in Charge of the Parish of Darfield on 3[rd] April 2022 and took over as Chairman of the PCC.

On 20[th] September 2022, Rev Sarah Maughan was instituted as Rector of Thurnscoe, Oversight Minister and Associate Priest within the parishes of the Wath2 Mission Area. On the same date, Rev Fiona Kouble was licenced as Associate Priest within the Wath2 Mission Area. 

The PCC dealt with the usual range of regular business, with its ongoing financial situation affecting the support to the Diocesan Common Fund and the various Mission agencies. 

Most of our activities as a church were able to resume with the addition of a Board games Club and Book Club. Whilst our Mothers Union Branch were able to hold some meetings at the start of the year, it proved impossible to continue and the Branch effectively closed at the end of 2022. 

We were able to resume our Carols by Candlelight service in December. Great Houghton hosted a bunch of escaped sheep (of the knitted variety) linked with Advent and Christmas. 

We continued our ministry to our Parishioners through funerals and weddings in both our churches and at the cemeteries and Barnsley Crematorium. 

The regular meetings for prospective Baptisms and Thanksgivings continued. A trial of including Baptisms in the morning Service at All Saints proved problematic and a revised time of 12:30 scheduled. Our Day of Remembering in October Included a more formal service in the provision. 

St Michael’s Church has been open for an hour on most Thursdays during the year and their Knit and Natter group were able to resume in September. 

We were able to hold a Christmas Fair to foster our links with our community. 

All Saints’ Church was opened for visitors several times during the year including the national Heritage Open Days with emphasis on our stained glass, and for our now regular Snowdrop Trail in conjunction with the Maurice Dobson Museum & Heritage Centre. 

Rev Fiona Kouble and Rev Christine Moorey continued their links with Upperwood Academy and All Saints Academy. Both schools have organised services in All Saints and visited the church as part of their History and Religious Curriculum. Links with Sandhill Primary School in Great Houghton are also being developed. Year 5 children from All Saints Academy took part in the planting of a rowan tree in the Rectory Cottage Garden as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project celebrating the Platinum Jubilee, in which the TWIGGS team were also involved. 

## Fabric report: 

The regular routine maintenance of equipment in our buildings continued. Progress towards installing toilet facilities in All Saints Church and improving accessibility to the building are also continuing. 

The central heating boiler in the Rectory Cottage was replaced during the year, mostly funded by a grant from the Diocesan Church in Action Fund. Internal reorganization of stored materials has allowed two meeting rooms to be available for use. 

Thanks are extended to those who spare time keep the St Michael’s Memorial rose garden weed free and to care for the roses. 

The Friends of Darfield Churchyard continue to undertake the maintenance of our Churchyard for which we are very grateful. 

## Safeguarding 

The PCC and DCC are committed to implementing Promoting a Safer Church, the House of Bishops’ Safeguarding Policies and Good Practice guidelines. Safeguarding is included on the agenda of every PCC meeting and its relevant policies are regularly reviewed and updated as required by changes in legislation and recommended good practice. In accordance with their duties and where required, individuals are subject to regular checks with the Disclosure and Barring Service. Safeguarding Training at an appropriate level is undertaken in line with Diocesan guidelines. The PCC will maintain a Safeguarding Training Needs Analysis and present it each year to the Annual Meeting. 

## Activity Reports: 

## Prayer Ministry Team: 

Our Prayer Team is made up of seven committed Church members: Andrea Harrison, Irene Barraclough, Wendy Chorlton, Pam Emson, Sue Lee, Karen Walton and Carol Hunter. 

As the clutches of covid began to relinquish its grasp in 2022 and our churches began to recover from the restrictions, the team once more began to offer prayer ministry in the South Chapel after our morning services.

We have continued to meet as a team on a weekly basis to pray for our Churches, their feeding programmes and events and to bring before The Throne of Grace the people who have requested our prayer support for themselves or others. We are also in touch via a group app which allows us to share (with permission) urgent prayer requests as they come in. 

It is our privilege to be on the rota for cleaning our beautiful Church building and our members are also actively involved in other Church activities and outreach wherever possible (Bereavement Services, Party in The Park, Summer and Christmas Fayres etc). 

Dealing with people’s pain can take its toll and we seek to keep ourselves safe and close to God by undergoing training where possible and earlier in the year we met for a day’s ‘Resilience’ training in Church. We also seek to occasionally meet together for fun and fellowship (usually in the form of a meal). 

## Thanksgivings and Baptisms. 

During 2022 there were five Baptism Preparation Evenings, to which nine families came. 

These evenings are informative and interactive, for example we use a quiz to find out the reasons for wanting a baptism for their child. 

There is a presentation about what is involved in having their child baptised and opportunities for questions to be asked. 

The whole evening lasts about an hour. Refreshments are available, making for a relaxed atmosphere. Baptisms are now planned for after a morning service, enabling our church family to stay and support the baptism family.

## Friends of Darfield Churchyard: FODCY 

The small team of regular workers have continued their efforts to keep our Churchyard in a condition that impresses our visitors. Their tasks are appropriate to the seasons and include grass cutting, leaf and branch collection, path clearing and edging, checking gravestones, tidying graves and ensuring graves are accessible for visitors. If you have some spare time on Monday or Thursday afternoons, why not join them? 

## Church Hall 

Our regular users of the Church Hall have continued throughout 2022 with the exception of the Toddler Session run by Lucy and friends, which ceased in the summer.  These regular users are - Slimming World, Dance Fit (3 sessions!), Scouts, Exodus Youth Project (all weekly) and the U3A (monthly).  It is good to see the hall used so regularly for community activities.  However, our own church use of the hall is reducing as we no longer have our Mothers’ Union and our weekly after-church refreshments slot has dwindled to being more of a monthly event.  There were also a number of one-off bookings for parties or meetings in 2022 and a full day for a show put on by a local group from Thurnscoe.  The Hall paid its way in 2022 but 2023 brings a whole new set of challenges with the steep rise in energy costs and the deteriorating state of the Hall itself. 

## Bell Ringers 

The ringers practise every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and regularly ring for weekly Sunday morning services.  In 2022 we additionally rang for two weddings and several funerals and for some other important events which included: the licensing of Revd Fiona Kouble as our Priest in Charge, the area Confirmation Service, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee and then, later in the year, her death and funeral.  On Christmas Eve we rang a special celebration of 45 years since our first peal on Darfield bells, with two of the original team ringing for it.  On Christmas Day there was the usual joyous and noisy gathering to ring for morning service with 11 ringers and 1 visitor up the tower.  The ringers would like to thank the congregation of Darfield All Saints for their continued support and encouragement. 

## Games Night 

This is a group that usually meets every other month on a Saturday night to play more modern board and other games. Having only started in June 2022, it has only met three times because, with a packed schedule of activities for Christmas, it was decided not to hold one in December.

However, it so far has been quite successful and has attracted a cross-section of people of different ages and genders, with individuals and families attending. People generally seemed to have enjoyed themselves, and indeed, several individuals and families have now purchased for themselves some of the games they have tried.  In addition, several groups of people have got together socially in-between time, to get more practice and expertise. 

## Book Club 

Whilst this group is in its infancy, having only met three times (the first being a planning meeting), it is attended by a small but passionate group of book lovers. 

It meets every other month on the second Wednesday of the month for a session that lasts over an hour. Whilst at the moment, it is made up of mostly women of a certain age, we do have a couple of younger members and hopefully, in time, as the word spreads, we will gain more of varying ages etc. 

So far, we have read ‘The Alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho’s and ‘Elizabeth’s List’ by Lulah Ellender, both of which have inspired lively and interesting discussions. In addition, it has also led us to set up an informal book borrowing system between members, and of course, it has created a network of people who now feel free to discuss and share their recent reading matters and, indeed, some of the emotionally charged parts of their lives! 

## Curate’s Reflections – Rev Christine Moorey: 

I have now been in post for around 20 months and would like to begin by thanking everyone for their continued welcome and support.  As many of you know, my ministry has been affected over the past year due to major surgery and I have been sad to be absent for several months.  My report, therefore, may seem a little less full than last year, but I look forward to what God has in store for me for the remainder of my curacy with the wonderful people of Darfield and Great Houghton. 

Before my absence I was involved in several school assemblies and school services in church connected with Lent and Easter, and after my return, Christmas events.  I have recently been on some ‘Open the Book’ training and I look forward to developing my school ministry across the schools of Darfield and Great Houghton.  I hope and pray this will be an opportunity for growth for both church communities. 

I have conducted one funeral since returning from sick leave, at Great Houghton.  Supporting the bereaved and conducting a funeral service for their loved one, continues to be a privilege and an area of my ministry which I value greatly. 

I helped to organise the memorial days across our parishes and was present at Great Houghton to help host their first Memorial Day; a gentle time of quiet reflection and prayer, creating a space for the local community was a privilege and I am so grateful to Olive for her immense support with that event.  We shared a Remembrance Service the following day with our Methodist brother the Revd Mick Neal leading the service and myself preaching; it was lovely to welcome our brothers and sisters from the Methodist church in Great Houghton. 

My second Christmas in post was busy and exciting!  Being involved with the Advent Sheep trail at Great Houghton was a particular highlight for me; getting to know local business owners and seeing families come to two new services was just wonderful.  Seeing how the church can come alongside a community, at such a significant part of our Christian calendar, is so encouraging and I pray for more opportunities to build relationships with our communities and see more people coming to know God and our church families.  Another special highlight was preaching at the Darfield Carol Service, seeing the church full at Christmas was just so fantastic (albeit nerve wracking too from that high pulpit!). 

I would particularly like to thank church wardens, Peter and Olive, for their relentless support with a list of things too numerous to mention; thank you for making everything possible with such humility, commitment and gentleness; and for answering so many questions, possibly the same questions repeatedly(!), always with such patience.  A thank you too, to Aubrey for his support at various, including school, services; so valuable, to enable children to hear, possibly for the first time, live music. 

Thank you to Revd Fiona for my training so far; alongside looking after three churches she has me to train!  I look forward to the remainder of my training and hopefully(!) being of use and support as the months unfold. At the time of writing this report, I await my ordination as priest.  Thank you for your encouragement with my ministry and look forward to celebrating my very first eucharist at Great Houghton.

## 4th@4 Youth Fellowship Group 

4th@4Youth group have continued to meet monthly throughout 2022. The annual trip to the Diocesan Youth event _Breathe Deep_ was delayed due to Covid restrictions from the usual January to April in 2022 and was, for the first time held at Sheffield Cathedral.  Sue Holden (Darfield) has now joined our leadership team. 

We have met once a month in church and have welcomed several new younger members to the group. 

I would like to give thanks to Sue Holden, Andy Smith and Fiona Kouble who have made the group sessions possible and for their input over the last year. Dr Roland Kouble 

## The Well 

Our shared café style church (with Ardsley and Thurnscoe parishes) has continued in the Church Hall on the third Sunday of the month - with three exceptions -in August we had a holiday. in October - we had to cancel due to the electrics in the Church Hall not working and in April when we hosted the Maundy Thursday service along with bowls of Goulash soup. This felt like a great way to explore the Easter story together. 

In May we said farewell to Sam Ellmore, our ordinand who had helped develop The Well, as he left to prepare for his June 2022 ordination and the beginning of his Curacy in the parishes of Ecclesfield and Grenoside. The services continued to be led by the wider, and over time the numbers attending have been growing. 

I am indebted to Sam -and we wish him well as he continues in his next step in ministry, to Robin, Rob and Dave as they develop the music side of our shared worship, for Jo and team for hosting refreshments and for the bakers who regularly contribute and for the rest of the team in offering prayers, sharing reflections, creative responses and not forgetting Jenny and Amelia who ensure that we can all see the service on the screen! 

The Well is truly a place to encounter God and to encounter each other. Revd Fiona Kouble 

## Wath Deanery Synod 

We are part of the wider Wath Deanery Synod, which is in the Doncaster Archdeaconry of Sheffield Diocese and the Deanery Synod meets three times a year. In early 2022 Bishop of Sheffield, the Rt Revd Dr Pete Wilcox invited Fiona Kouble to take on the role of Co Area Dean - alongside the current Area Dean Rev Andy Brewerton. They were both formally licensed in April 2022 at All Saints by the Bishop of Sheffield as part of Fiona's licensing as Priest in Charge of Darfield Parish. 

In early 2022 each PCC throughout the Deanery was asked to read and act on the contents of the updated Deanery Handbook. copies are available if anyone would like one. 

In the first meeting at Brampton Bierlow, Libby Culmer gave a presentation on Cashless payments with confirmation that this was easy to use. 

At our meeting in June Viv Cooling, Church Buildings Officer Team Leader, spoke of using our building to develop relationships in our local communities.  She went on to encourage everyone to see the possibilities of our church buildings.  Her position is to support and help parishes with building and maintenance related queries.  There was discussion after a member of a local PCC asked, “Why is it not possible to use individual cups at Holy Communion?” Bishop Pete has said that it is not allowed by Canon Law and is not the doctrine of the Church of England.  There was a lively discussion on local practise with the Common Cup and the theological integrity. 

John Marsh, Mission Development Advisor, came to our October meeting in Swinton and talked of new congregations, the discussion that followed focused on “What is a new congregation?”, and how would these develop.  He is keen to come and meet our team that run The Well! 

We also had a shared Deanery Prayer gathering (along with Tankersley Deanery) at Wombwell, St Mary’s.  The Bishop of Doncaster was present, and we had speakers, prayer and discussion on ‘Growing Together in Mission.’ 

## WATH2 Mission Area 

We are part of a wider Mission Area - the parishes of Ardsley, Adwick upon Dearne, Barnburgh with High Melton, Bilham, Darfield and Thurnscoe 

In April - Fiona Kouble was licensed as the new Priest in Charge of Darfield parish, the churches of All Saints and St Michael and All Angels.

Revd Canon Kathryn Herrod, Priest in Charge of Bilham, Barnburgh and High Melton, and Adwick on Dearne, retired in October 2022.  As plans were made early in the year, it was confirmed that there was no expectation that Revd Fiona Kouble would take on responsibility for covering the main services parishes in the Wath2 Mission Area that Revd Kathryn had been leading. We are now advertising for a new minister to join the team and covering the parishes of Bilham, Barnburgh and Adwick on Dearne 

We were delighted to be able to appoint to the Mission Area position in Thurnscoe and the installation and licensing of the Revd Sarah Maughan took place on 20th October.  She was also licensed as Oversight Minister and Associate Priest for Adwick-upon-Dearne, Ardsley, Barnburgh with Melton on the Hill, Bilham and Darfield.   The Revd Fiona Kouble was also licensed as Oversight Minister and Associate Priest at this service to the wider parishes. 

We have maintained our Steering Group - ensuring representation from all the parishes and encouraging networking and support across the church families. We will be looking at developing this in the coming years. **"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing”.** [1 Thessalonians 5: 11] 

## Priest in Charge and Oversight Ministers Report. 

2022 has been a mixed year – a wonderful year, a year to celebrate whilst also acknowledging challenges that have been presented along the way. 

I joined you “officially” on April 3rd with a huge celebratory service and the Rt Revd Pete Wilcox, the Bishop of Sheffield as he licensed me as your Priest in Charge. I have been asked a few times why are you not the Rector? This is because I also remain the Vicar of Ardsley, and I cannot hold the official Title of more than one parish at a time - though I can be Priest in Charge of many (don’t worry I am NOT taking on any more!). We could add Rector if we legally “united” the two parishes, however I also have absolutely no plans to suggest this, so that in the future we still have the option for a Rector of Darfield and a Vicar of Ardsley!  This becomes possible when we are able to continue to grow our Church Families and making connections with our wider communities. We will do this by deepening our own relationships with Jesus Christ, this will probably not be overnight- but then we know that God gives growth in His time and not according to our checklist! 

When you read through this report there is so much to celebrate and much room for hope in the Lord. We have welcomed new members to our family and been alongside each other in moments of grief. It was a hard moment earlier in 2022 when our brothers and sisters in Christ at the Low Valley Methodist Chapel had to close, and whilst we understand their sorrow, we have been delighted to offer a haven, a safe refuge for some of their members. I look forward to discovering together how God will bless us and enable us to work to His glory together. We have been able to begin to really support St Michaels and All Angels to become more visible in Great Houghton – see their report. 

We have been able to offer different styles of worship in both of our churches and with our new Worship Leaders Group (people involved in services across both Ardsley and Darfield). I pray that we will continue to develop, to grow and encourage a variety of worship that will enable us to encounter God in different ways and that we will be excited to invite others to come and join us! 

Patterns of worship have had to alter across the year as we have adapted, but I do believe that we are now finding a sustainable pattern that still offers space for creativity and the promptings of the Holy Spirit. 

The Bellringers in All Saints continue to delight, inspire and call out the Glory of God and the presence of prayer across the community! thank you to Chris Walton our Tower Captain and team. 

I am delighted and hopeful at how our school’s ministry is developing across both communities. 

A Songs of Praise service and Christmas 2022 were exciting times and I think  I would not be alone to say that it felt as though we were back after Covid – especial thanks to Mr and Mrs Venables for their endeavours. 

There will be more said at our Vision Sunday service, but for now a few thanks – to Peter Robinson our erstwhile solo Church Warden, for always being a head of the game and his resolute support, for our PCC Members for ongoing challenge and encouragement, for our worship leaders- for inspiring worship and sermons, for their willingness to trust in the Lord, to try out new things, to celebrate in the traditions of the Church and for enabling the rest of us to worship our awesome God. For our musicians: for Mr Aubrey Venables, and our musical and choir Mistress Mrs Margaret Venables, and all the members of the choir; and for our growing worship band at The Well. I am also delighted to be able to minister alongside our curate the Revd Christine Moorey. 

Growth will only come if prayer is our foundation and so to our Prayer Warriors a particular thanks – but I am grateful to acknowledge all the prayers of the whole church family.

For each of you as you as you have organised flowers, cleaned, counted donations, read, led prayers, tidied up, baked, offered refreshments and welcome, as you have debated the scriptures, the Church, the world around us. For your support, for your challenges I give thanks to God daily. 

Where is God leading us too – well to know Him better and to be able to proclaim His word and love into our communities and perhaps a toilet and kitchenette project along the way!!??!!  And finally… 

_4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.[6 ] Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.[7] And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus._

## Financial Review and Explanation of Funds 

The Financial Statements on page 10 give the combined figures for the whole parish.  They show that the total unrestricted receipts in 2022 were £58,699, of which £41,655 was from voluntary contributions (including £6,902 from Gift Aid).   An additional £4,133 was received in restricted funds. 

Total unrestricted payments were £56,498, with an additional £3,861 in restricted payments, £3,276 of which related to the spending of grants received. 

In summary, the total income for the parish in 2022 was £62,833 and total expenditure was £60,359.  Full details of receipts, payments and funds are given in the Financial Statements. 

Income and Expenditure are classified under three headings – Unrestricted, Designated and Restricted. 

Restricted amounts have been received for a specific purpose and can only be spent for that purpose. 

Designated amounts are identified by the PCC as being for a particular purpose, but this purpose can change if circumstances change. 

All other receipts and payments are classed as Unrestricted and can be used by the PCC for its general purposes. 

## **Financial Notes for Darfield All Saints Church only.** 

(Notes for St Michael and All Angels, Houghton, are given on page 9.) 

Total unrestricted receipts in 2022 for Darfield were £53,385.  An additional £4,133 was received in restricted funds, which consisted of £480 donations, £377 interest and dividends, and £3,276 grants. 

The ‘planned giving’ (through envelopes and standing orders) reduced by £930 (4%) from the previous year to £22,884.  Thanks go to the many of our regular givers who have maintained or increased their giving in very difficult circumstances.  Open collections have almost doubled from the previous year to £4,671.  Church Hall income made a good recovery in 2022 to £7,934.  Our fund-raising income also started to recover and made £1504 with income coming from a table-top sale (£275), a stall at Darfield Gala (£137), Wreath-making sessions (£190), Christmas Fair (£800) and _‘easyfundraising’_ income (£102).  We received 3 grants during the year, being £426 for the Hall noticeboard, £2,700 towards the Rectory Cottage boiler and £150 for the Rectory Cottage garden project. 

Overall income for 2022 reduced from the 2021 figure by £8,934 down to £57,518, but this is partly due to a reduction in income from legacies over the two years. 

A total of £56,009 was spent at Darfield in 2022.  This included a £23,000 contribution to the Diocesan ‘Common Fund’ (which largely provides the stipends and housing for the clergy).  We tithe our income from ‘planned giving’ and this resulted in £2,285 being shared between our five supported missions (CPAS, Scripture Union, Release International, The Bible Society and Goldthorpe Salvation Army).  Clergy expenses increased in 2022 as we gained a share in not one, but two, clergy (our Priest-in-charge and our curate).  Utility bills also increased for both the hall

and church as we returned to using both buildings more regularly than in 2021.  A few large of items of expenditure which arose during the year were (a) the replacing of the central heating boiler in the Rectory Cottage (covered mainly by a grant), (b) necessary electrical work in the Church Hall and (c) new outdoor noticeboards for both church and hall (the hall being covered by a grant). 

For 2022 Darfield’s total income exceeded the amount spent by £1,510 but it must be remembered that we received £2,500 in legacies, which went into our ‘Projects Fund’ for the church toilets.  Without this our spending would have exceeded our income. 

In addition to our current account, which is used for the day to day running of the church, we had four restricted funds and four designated funds.  All actions on our different ‘Funds’ are shown on page 2 of the Financial Statements. 

The total amount of money to carry forward to 2023 for Darfield All Saints Church is £89,759.  Of this amount £73,471 is in designated funds and £5,566 is in restricted funds.  Full details are given in the Financial Statements. That means that we have carried forward £10,723 in unrestricted and undesignated funds.  Bearing in mind that the monthly average cost of keeping Darfield All Saints running is about £5,000, we have just over two month’s running costs readily available in hand. 

Our COIF Charities Ethical Investment Fund Income Units continue to provide quarterly dividends to the Education Fund. 

We have to record members of the PCC or their immediate family who have received payments shown in the accounts during the year.  For 2022 these were – 

J Darlison, who was employed from August 2019 as a Mission Partnership Development Worker by the Sheffield Diocese on behalf of the 4forMission Partnership to support the four churches in the partnership. PCC and DCC funds are paid to the Diocesan Board of Finance to support this work in line with the agreed division of costs between the churches.  In 2022 this amounted to £1,997 from Darfield and £220 from Houghton. 

All members of the PCC who have pecuniary interests in PCC discussions declare these interests and withdraw from the discussions and any connected vote. 

## **Financial Notes for Houghton, St Michael and All Angels Church only.** 

Total unrestricted receipts in 2022 were £5,539, including £3,814 from voluntary contributions and £885 from Gift Aid.   Income from both open collections and ‘planned giving’ (through envelopes) reduced on the previous year by 26% in the case of the ‘planned giving’ and 16% in the case of open collections.  No grants were received during the year. £721 was received in wedding and funeral fees.  Overall income for 2022 reduced from the 2021 figure by £1,570.  Full details of all income are given in the Financial Statements. 

Total spending at St Michael’s in 2022 was £4,575 which included £1,000 contribution to the Diocesan Common Fund.  2022 accounts showed an overall profit of £964. 

St Michael and All Angels church has one restricted fund, JAM Gang.  All actions on our different ‘Funds’ are shown on page 2 of the Financial Statements. 

The total amount of money to carry forward to 2023 for Houghton St Michael and All Angels is £17,863, of which £97 is a restricted amount in the JAM Gang fund. 

## **Parish Reserves Policy** 

It is PCC policy to try to maintain a balance on unrestricted funds which equates to at least three months’ unrestricted payments.  This is usually equivalent to about £16,000 for the whole parish.  It is held to smooth out fluctuations in cash flow and to meet emergencies.  The balance of £101,960 held in unrestricted (including ‘designated’) funds at the year-end was more than sufficient to meet the target.  This is mainly due to the balance of £71,390 held within All Saints’ designated ‘projects’ fund.
