TRUSTEES’ REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 APRIL 2021

The Trustees met twice in the year.

At a meeting on 22 December 2020, ELMO’s Vision and Mission Statements were discussed, together with continuing fundraising efforts despite lockdowns, ongoing links within the prison and opportunities for developing plans for when restrictions due to lockdown were relaxed and activities within the prison restored. The Trustees also discussed payment policy for musicians’ fees in the event of late cancellations, which are a significant risk in the current, volatile prison environment.

A possible project bringing recorded music into the cells at HMP Pentonville by means of a collaboration between ELMO and the prison’s Education Department was also discussed. This project had been developed by The Irene Taylor Trust during the lockdown. The Trust’s delivery team developed a series of CD recordings (including hip hop, folk, grime, rock and classical music), together with worksheets which include playlists covering ten different musical genres. Forty learners were introduced to new musical genres and ideas and were encouraged to respond to the questions posed and articulate their reactions. The activity broadened their musical interests, kept participants engaged with creative activity and provided the prisoners taking part with purposeful in-cell activity during very long periods of internal lockdown.

The Trustees also discussed the advantages of collaboration with The Irene Taylor Trust and using ELMO’s links at Pentonville to help facilitate the running of this project in Pentonville while we are unable to run live projects. An additional meeting of the Trustees was held in January 2021 to make a final decision on this matter. The meeting decided to go ahead with the playlist project, which then went live throughout January and February 2021.

Over the year, despite the ongoing restrictions due to Covid 19, Emma Dogliani, ELMO’s Executive Officer, has continued to visit

Pentonville weekly in her role as a volunteer visitor within the prison. This has enabled her to strengthen links with several other departments inside the prison and reach agreement in principle to run further workshops as soon as circumstances permit.

Links have also been maintained and developed with the Chaplaincy at Pentonville and the expanding Official Prison Visitors program within the prison, both of which are vital to the success of ELMO’s future projects.

As in 2020, a day of Christmas music, including interactive sessions, was planned in December 2021. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled the day before it was due to take place when the prison was returned to lockdown because of a new wave of Covid infections in the prison.
