Introductlon
Kokrobr(e is a fishing community to the west of Accrd. Ghana. There is a lack of educ2tion here with the
greater part of the communty depending on f￿hing fortheir livelihood. This is not reliable and does not
guarantee an income. Many of the thiklren in Kokrobite do not attend school due to the cost of unrforms,
shoes, books and daily food. An addltlonal problem is caused by the parents not appreaating the value of
an education having had no formal education themselves. Parents a￿ ￿lUctant to send their children to
school rfthere is an opportunityforthem to do somethingthatwill help to generate income for the family.
When this ￿ not the case the children spend the greater part of the day hanging around the streets or on
the beach.
Kokrobite Chiltern Centre IKCCI works with the parents and chldren and help to support the thildren so
thattheyare ableto attendschool andgain an educatK)n.Wealso workwith thildren aged 4- 18years out
of school hours and provide addittonal d355e5 to help them learn to read. wiite. speak English and be
competentin basic Math Pro￿dUreS. We grle them a Pla￿ to do their homework and assistance with this
when necessary. In addition. we offerthe opwrtunltyto ptsy sport-football. volleyball and cricket are the
current favourrÉe51 Forthe children attending sthool we provide them with unrfomi. shoes. school bags,
books, statlonery. at least one good meal every day and funds for medical care and haircuts when
necessary-
2021 was our eighteenth year of operating as a Ghana reg$te￿d NGO and ourthlrd as a UK reglstered
charity. SchooL% reopened in Ghana afterthe prok)nged ck>sure due to the pandemio We continued to
review our services and the best way to support the thildren. 5th0015 and communities that we work with
to ensure we continued to abide by Covid-19 protoco15 ojrrent at the time. One of our full-time team of
three started a course of further study at unNersity in May 2021 but continues to work with u5 during
vacations and another has taken a leave of absen￿ to pursue further study in graphic design.

We continue to have three football teams registered with Ghana Football A550ciation. the U13. U15 2nd
UIYS. Their training sessions resumed fft February with matthes recommenang in Marth 2021.

Attendan￿ atour learning ￿ntreSe5510￿5¢0ntinueS to be completety free of charge and voluntary as well
a5 beingopento both sponso￿d and non-sponsored children who may ormay not attend full time
education. We provide b￿akfast or a snack for all attendees depending on the time of day the session
takes place. Attendance numbers vary slightty depending on the session but typically Monday to Friday
sessions will have 50- Ellchildren with higher numbers, up to 160 on Saturday momings. Our provislon of
learning sessions has been commended by both Ghana Education Services and the Municipal Dirertorate
and we are grateful for their support.

KCC continued to deliverthe UKAid funded ToolsforTeachers SEN Tralning Programme until the end of the
firstquarterwhen the fundingcame to astheduled end. Funding had been extended by six months to
enable us to continue running a revised programme that made allowan￿ for Covid-19 restrictions in place
atthattime. The lasttwelve months of programme delwerywa5 done virtuallyto comply with Covid-19
protocols. The Tools forTeachers Project ran for 2.5 years dur5ng which time we provided Special
Educational Needs training using a literacy-based approach and 5UPPOrt for over 2CtI teachers from every
Ghana Education se￿iCe5 Primary and Junior High School (more than 150 schools in totall within the Ga
South and Weija/Gbawe Municipalities.
Ghana schools reopened in January 2021 afterten months of dosure due tothe pandemicwhich meant
that Learning Centre sessions reverted to the pre-pandemic scheduFe. Shoes. unrforms and school
stationery items were shared with more than 150 children in preparatlon forthe new term. KCC staff met
with community members and parents ofsponsored children to engage and encourage themtosupport
the children in their retum to school. Donated educational resources were also shared with four schools to
supportthem with the resumption of classes.
Kokrobite Chiltern Centre were invited to participate in the Youth Form Swf(zerland Global Change Makers
Programme. The KCC Directors were inte￿IeWed by intemational students and in turn KCC stude nts had
the opportuntyto Inte￿ieW Global Change Makersfrom aroundthe world.
We were pleased to restart our Library Box Projert with boxes of graded reading books going into five
schools in local communities. Each termthe book boxes come back to KCC for checking and replenishment
before going back out to schools enabling children and teachers to have daily access to levelled reading
materials.

The first temi at school went well overall for our students. However, there were some logistical iSSLtes for
schools as they reopened and we were pleased to be able to SUPPOrt w￿h supplies of face masks. hand
sanitiser and Veronica buckets for over 30 sthools.
The Learning Centre continued to open six days a week with typically up to EQ thIld￿n attending each
afternoon and 120 coming to the Saturday morning sessions.
Aftersome initial i55ues we were able to make great progress with our prototype aquaponic5 System and
delwerthe first teachlng sessions on how this works to our students. This was done with the 5UPPOrt of
volunteers from the International School of Zugand Lu￿rne. Switzedand.

Spain. The film crew and prOdU￿rS were keen to show lrfe as it is for chIld￿n and families from fishing
communities in Ghanaand howwesupportthem.The thildren lovedtaking part and were delighted to see
themselves on the screen when we re￿ived a copy of the programme.

a signiflcant donation of books which was dvixled between the Leaming Centre and Library Box Projett.
We held the first in our series of You are yourown Champion. sessions designed to encourage and
empower children and younE people aged 10- 14years to k)ok at themselves and their communities,
consider community, national and international issues and the attion they can tske to resolve thallenges
and bring about change.

Work continued at the new learning ￿ntre and the electrictty was connerted making it possible to work
longer days there when needed and proV￿l￿g essential security lighting for the site.
We continued to provide schools and individual students with supplies of hand sanfciser and fa￿ masks in
order to support them adhering to the ongoing Covid-19 protocols.
The'you are yourown Champion'sessionswerepopularandverywell attended.Sessionscovertopics such
as'what makes me unique? My aspiratlons and what can I do to help me achieve them?,, 'Adversity and
howto overcome challenges, and'mycommuntyand what I can doto support its developmenv.
We celebrated the International Day of the Girl by donating sports kr( to local schools-based girls, football
and netball teams.
We received donations of medical supplie5 including wound dre55ings. Covid-19 test kits. face masks and
medication from a sUPPOrter in Germany and were pleased to be able to share these with Bortianor Clinic
and Kokrobite Clinic.
The termly exam results for our sponsored students were good overall with all children showing varying
levels of improvement in at least three subjetts. Our leamlng ￿ntre sessions continue to underpin and
support the syllabus that is taught in Ghana schoo15 as well as looking to broaden the subject matter and
encourage our students to think criticalty about the topits they are studying.
After a challenging fund-raising campaign and in line with Covid-19 regulattons current at the tlme st was
great to be able to deliversuch a speaal Christmas ￿lebratiOn wlth more than 12(KJ chiwren receNing a
hot meal, soft drink, ice cream and wrapped gift.
