Report and Financial Statements Year ending 30 April 2021 Charity number 1185269
Report of the trustees for the year ending 30 April 2021
The trustees are pleased to present their annual report together with the consolidated financial statements of the CIO for the year ending 30 April 2021 which are also prepared to meet the requirements for a Trustee’s Report and Accounts for the Charity Commission.
Chair’s Report
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our plans for 2021 continued to be heavily impacted, including the cancellation of Lewes STEMfest and Brighton WonderFest. We were pleased that we managed to achieve community based activities in East Brighton, despite the plans having to be adapted several times due to ongoing restrictions.
I would like to thank our sponsors, volunteers, trustees and the public for their support in making our work possible.
Dr Stephen Wilkins
Chair
Our Purpose
The objects of the CIO are:
For the public benefit, promote learning for pleasure by people of all ages across Sussex in such ways as the charity trustees think fit, including but not limited to:
-
a. Produce live events that enable diverse audiences across Sussex to participate in informal STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) learning;
-
b. Enable and promote local STEM events, through online promotion and logistical support; c. Invite local people to contribute their knowledge and interests, celebrating and exploring their curiosity while fostering understanding between people from diverse backgrounds.
Our Activities & Projects
East Sussex Community Science Club 2021
Reviewing the visitor data from Brighton WonderFest 2019, it was identified that, despite being based right next to the region, there were very few visitors from East Sussex. To build relationships in the area, we worked with local community organisers to deliver engagement sessions. We worked with The Crew Club and the newly formed East Brighton Community Science Club to deliver a zoom ‘meet the scientist’ session. We also delivered activity boxes to the young people who attended the zoom session. The project was funded by UK Research and Innovation and the UK Science Festivals Network. The activities had to be modified due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and we are grateful to Keith Turner from the East Brighton Community Science Club who supported the coordination.
Brighton WonderFest 2021
This event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lewes STEMfest 2021
This event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Financial Review
The CIO ended its first financial period with a positive balance. The principal funding sources were the British Science Association and the principal expenses were for the East Sussex Community Science Club.
