## **Church in Lockdown**
From early in the year the country was in lockdown, with our churches locked and everything moved online. We explored how we could continue to ‘be church’ in lockdown. Supported by advice from our Bishops and Archbishops, we began ‘live streaming’ services on social media and established a pattern of services online. Many people joined in with those, which has been really encouraging, and now we are back in person we have seen our congregation grow as a result. We tried to remain in touch with those who didn’t have access to social media, or internet, through telephone calls, postcards, parish magazines, gifts and letters.
## **The Kitchen**
St Aidan’s Kitchen continued, every week, as our ‘outside’ Kitchen when the building was closed. We see about half of our usual guests there plus another 100 or so who find themselves desperate and destitute due to the virus. We do hope to be able to return to our full offering, in church, with hot food, and the free shop set up we used to enjoy. Donations still come in, often bolstered by our social media presence. Throughout lockdown we worked closely with Poolie Time Exchange.
## **Hartlepool Central Group**
Our group council seldom met in lockdown. It seems it was one of very few things that didn’t move onto zoom. But we did meet, and we made the decision to remain in the group and wrote to inform the bishop of that decision. We hope that being part of the group will help during in future and will strengthen the position when looking at recruiting the next incumbent.
## **Communities of Hope**
In September we welcomed our three new CoH workers to the central group. The Community Evangelist primarily works in and around St Aidan’s Kitchen, to include a faith element and to disciple those we meet regularly on a Thursday. The Children and Families Worker works in local primary schools and in the community with families and is working towards setting up a new worshipping community. The cost of these three posts is met by a grant from the central church and they are paid via Stranton Parish.
## **Vocations**
The Central Hartlepool Group is being recognised as an appealing place for other people to learn and train. Students are attending on placements (for a month, six months or longer). This means there have been, and will be more new faces around, from time-to-time, trying to figure out what God is asking of them. Also, really encouraging, there are 3 or 4 members of our own churches who are now in various stages of questioning whether God might be calling them to ordination too.
## **Work with St Aidan’s School**
Our school continues to be a huge blessing. Our links there are strong and increasing. As well as weekly Open the Book assemblies and engagement with the Academy Council, we have also branched out to include other schools from the Durham and Newcastle Diocesan Multi-Academy Trust in our online worship. Now that we are an established ICON School, we are beginning to see how we can support other schools in the MAT to also join this network.
## **Modern Slavery Initiatives**
Awareness raising work around MDS continues and has recently included a lent course on women trapped in slavery, which was well attended online.
## **Safeguarding**
This is an item on every agenda of the PCC. No significant issues to report.
## **Fabric**
Both building were regularly inspected during the lock down. Routine maintenance took place. The heating system in St. Aidans was deemed inefficient and costly to run. A budget of £80,000 was set to procure a replacement heating system.
## **Finance**
In the year the parish spent £530 more than it received. On the day to day running of the parish (unrestricted funds) the loss was £9850, restricted funds (mainly the kitchen), a surplus of £9021 was achieved with the balance of £299 being interest received from trust funds. With church closed for most of the year, it is no surprise most income lines were down on previous years – “other” income was down £7146 (69%), donations were down £1401 (35%) money retained from fees was down £3201 (45%) and trading income (rent for St Columba) was down £990 (70%).
The amount received for kitchen was remarkably similar to 2019. We did pay the parish share we pledged in full at £25800.
With the closure of St. Aidans Church, the Thursday kitchen moved to the former parish hall car park and a partnership with Poolie Time Exchange was entered into. Due to generous donations in 2019 which continued into 2020, we were able to provide financial support to Poolie Time Exchange. The kitchen also benefits from non cash donations including regular meals supplied by the Muslim community and work of a team of volunteers to buy, sort and hand out bags of food and other essentials. The closure of the church did allow for savings to be made on maintenance and running costs which helped keep the loss for the year down

During the year the PCC employed a parish administrator (part time). No payments were large enough to attract social security costs.
As the Parish Administrator, Mrs Kathrine Batty, who is a member of the PCC, was paid £3580 (2019; £4070) during the year. Expenses of £189.00 were paid to Mother Gemma as priest in charge. All Saints Stranton and St Luke's paid equal amounts. No other payments or expenses were paid to other PCC members or persons closely connected to them or related parties The parish contributed to expenses for Revd Norman Shave and Revd Michelle Delves as part of group arrangements

## **Statement of Financial Activities for the year ended 31 December 2020**
## Note 1 – Accounting Policies
## 1a) Basis of Preparation
These accounts have been prepared to meet the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 together with the Charities (accounts and reports) regulations 2008 and statements of recommended practice on accounting and reporting by Charities. They have been prepared on an accruals basis. The statements include all transactions, assets and liabilities for which the PCC is responsible. The accounts do not include the activities of the Trust Funds held for the benefit of the PCC by the Diocese of Durham except insofar as income has been received from those funds
## 1b) Fixed Assets
Fixed assets are depreciated over a period generally 10 years estimated to reflect the useful economic life of the asset. The only asset being depreciated is the built kitchen in St. Aidans Church.
All other assets are charged to the accounts in the period payment is made.
## 1c) Debtors
Amounts receivable are stated at the value expected to be realised.
## 1d) Liabilities, Provisions, Deferred Income and Capital Grants
Full estimates are made of income received in advance and liabilities incurred and provisions are made in accordance with relevant financial reporting standards

**I report to the Trustees of Ecclesiastical Parish of Hartlepool St Aidan and St. Columba, for the year end 31 December 2020**
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
The charity trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
Examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011,
To follow the procedures laid down in the general direction given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act 2011 and
To state whether particular matters have come to my attention
## **Basis of independent examiners statement**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair” view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
1. Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the following requirements have not been met
- a) To keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act 2011
- b) To prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act and to account for Statutory Fees correctly
2. To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
