2. Structure, governance and management
MammaMia Liverpool is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. It is governed by its constitution and administered by a board of trustees, who meet regularly to oversee the charity’s activities, f inances and policies.
New trustees are appointed in accordance with the constitution elected by the members at the AGM.
No trustee received any remuneration or other benefit from the charity during the year. Dayto-day activities are delivered by a small team of self-employed tutors and session leaders supported by approximately five volunteers.
3. Objectives and activities
The objects of the CIO are, for the charitable purpose of the advancement of education, to advance the education of the public and in particular, but not exclusively, children educated in local English-speaking schools living in Liverpool and the surrounding area, by:

providing teaching services in Italian as an extra-curricular activity;

organising cultural activities and events to promote knowledge of Italian culture, history and traditions; and
-
liaising with the existing Italian community of Liverpool and the surrounding area.
In planning the charity’s activities the trustees have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit. The charity’s lessons, courses and cultural events are open to the public, serve both bilingual families and new learners of all backgrounds, and fees are kept at an accessible level, with the programme supplemented by free and low-cost community events.
4. Achievements and performance
During the year the charity continued to deliver its core programme of weekly Italian language lessons and courses for children from nursery age upwards, including tuition for students preparing for GCSE and A-level examinations. Lessons were delivered by a team of qualified tutors at hired community venues, and course fees of approximately £10,200 made up the majority of the charity’s income.
The charity also ran a varied programme of cultural events during the year, including a Christmas party, a Befana celebration in January, Italian food workshops, a giocoleria (juggling) workshop, talks on bilingualism, and a family theatre show in January 2025. A fundraising concert and raffle held on 13 June 2025 raised approximately £620 for the charity’s work.
The charity worked in partnership with the Dante Alighieri Society and with Merseyside Polonia and the Liverpool European Partnership on shared cultural and educational activities. During the year the charity was also commissioned by Liverpool City Council to provide Italian lessons to a child in foster care, enabling the child to communicate with their — family in Italy a clear example of the charity’s educational purpose serving the wider community. MammaMia Liverpool is part of the network of Enti Gestori recognised by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), which promotes Italian language education abroad.
Approximately 100 children and 60 families who attended lessons and events during the year, and all GCSE candidates were awarded a grade 9 in the 2024 Italian language exam.
5. Financial review
The accounts have been prepared on the receipts and payments basis, as permitted for charities with gross income below £250,000. A summary is set out below; the full receipts and payments account and statement of balances accompany this report.

‑ Income for the year rose to £13,603 (2023 24: £10,914), driven mainly by growth in lesson ‑ and course fees, while expenditure of £13,662 (2023 24: £9,929) reflected the expanded teaching programme, principally tutor fees, venue hire and event costs. The small deficit of £59 was met from funds brought forward.
Reserves policy

Reserves at 31 August 2025 were £685, which is below this target; the trustees plan to rebuild reserves through fundraising and fee income during 2025‑26.
