Lauren's Legacy

Report of the Trustees for the Period 5 September 2019 to 31 July 2020

The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the period 5 September 2019 to 31 July 2020. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in notes to the accounts and comply with the charity’s governing document, the Charities Act 2011 and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102), following an amendment bulletin published in October 2019.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Objectives and aims

Lauren's Legacy provides support to young people and their families who are undergoing treatment for cancer. This support could be in the form of respite breaks, provision of travel grants, provision of technology (tablets/laptops) to enable communication and study whilst isolated/hospitalised and other suitable grants/equipment as determined by the Trustees to add quality to life.

The trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charity's aims and objectives and in planning future activities. The objectives of the charity are detailed above. Who and how the charity has helped is detailed below.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE

Charitable activities

Lauren's Legacy was established in September 2019 with the specific aim of helping young people and their families going through cancer treatment. The assistance provided is designed to help with quality of life or specific requests by provision of wishes which could be concert tickets for a favourite band, laptops or tablets to aid in schoolwork or keeping in touch with friends and family during treatment, holidays or anything that can make life better during this difficult time.

We work with the Teenage Cancer Trust and Clic Sergeant who refer families to us for help. Our primary focus is young people between the ages of 13 and 24 living in the East Midlands area. Since our formation we have now granted 20 wishes with a total value of just under £6,000. These are as diverse as a wheelchair for a young man's wedding, individual climbing lessons, laptops/tablets/smart phones, lego sets and holidays. All of these designed to provide some joy during this difficult time.

We have managed to continue our work throughout the pandemic but some of our major fundraising activates have had to be cancelled.

A major target for us is to purchase a holiday lodge for families to use. With the onset of the pandemic this was put on hold, but we now wish to progress this.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Reserves policy

The trustees aim to maintain free reserves in unrestricted funds at a level which equates to approximately three months of unrestricted charitable expenditure. The trustees consider that this level will provide sufficient funds to cover support and governance costs.

The level of free reserves in unrestricted funds as at 31 July 2020 was £53,267 which equates to higher than the level required in accordance with the above reserves policy. This position has arisen due to being the first year of operations and the activity needing to build up.

FUTURE PLANS

The Trustees of Lauren’s Legacy all have personal experience of how devastating a cancer diagnosis for a young person can be. Whilst the treatment received from the NHS is excellent and Macmillan Nurses can provide practical support, sometimes there is a need to provide additional help to meet a specific need or bring some joy to the person and family. It is this area that we at Lauren’s Legacy wish to occupy by granting wishes and ultimately to have our own holiday lodge to offer much needed quality family breaks. Just to know that there are organisations out there, non-medical, that can help when asked can provide a feeling of support. We are a small flexible organisation that can respond rapidly, often within days, after a request for help.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Lauren's Legacy

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Lauren's Legacy

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of Lauren's Legacy (the Trust) for the period 5 September 2019 to 31 July 2020.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or 2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  2. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of preparing the financial statements

The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

The financial statements have been prepared to give a 'true and fair' view and have departed from the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 only to the extent required to provide a 'true and fair view'. This departure has involved following the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and republic of Ireland (FRS 102) , following the withdrawal of the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) effective from 1 April 2005.

Lauren's Legacy meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS102.

The principal accounting policies adopted in the preparation of the financial statements are set out below and have remained unchanged from the previous year, and also have been consistently applied within the accounts.

The financial statement are presented in £ Sterling.

Income

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Expenditure

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Grants offered subject to conditions which have not been met at the year end date are noted as a commitment but not accrued as expenditure.

Taxation

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.

Fund accounting

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.

Cash at bank and in hand

Cash at bank and cash in hand includes cash and short term highly liquid investments with a short maturity of three months or less from the date of acquisition or opening of deposit or similar account.
