## **Section 2. Objects and activities**
## **2.1 Charitable purposes**
The object of the charity is to advance the education of the public in the history and heritage of Hetton Colliery Railway in particular but not exclusively through the provision of educational tours, talks and workshops.
## **2.2 Summary of the main activities in relation to these objects**
In planning our activities for the year, we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustees’ meetings.
## **Section 3. Activities and performance**
## **3.1 Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period**
The year of 2023 did not see any slowing down of the significant traction of the previous years that were in anticipation of the bicentenary flagship year of events, activities and initiatives.
As ever the work of the HCR200 project was overseen by a group of committed volunteers who served as Trustees and committee members which certainly helped raise the profile of Hetton, the Colliery Railway, the City of Sunderland and our place in world history.
A continued effort to include partners and organisations in the work was key, to network and to share the endeavours of the charity.
The work was maintained through the regular meetings of the trustees acting as the Finance and General Purposes’ Committee and also the various sub-committees which were updated to reflect the work going forward.
The various sub-committees continued to meet as and when necessary, whilst also using hybrid and virtual ways of working; feeding into the Finance and General Purposes Committee with their recommendations.

The work of each committee and area of work is summarised below:
## **Finance & General Purposes** (Trustees)
- Continued to represent on Elemore Green Space Project and Stephenson Trail projects with Sunderland City Council
- Oversaw the whole project making strategic and financial decisions.
- Overseeing website and social media.
## **Lectures, Publications & Exhibitions**
- Three new publications launched
- Prior publications continuing to be sold via events and eBay.
## **Education**
- Community walks for the annual Heritage Open Days, incorporating Elemore Eco Park, ELCAP and Hetton Lyons Country Park
- In-house technology workshops with a STEM theme for several local primary schools.
- Community art workshops to create a community banner which is now permanently displayed at ELCAP.
## **Events**
- Attendance at the 112[th] Durham “Big Meeting” including the parade both locally and in Durham City and official blessing of the Hetton Lyons Banner at Durham Cathedral.
- Series of film viewings of the commissioned “The Hetton Adventure- The Railway, Colliery and Community – 1822-2022 both locally and Sunderland and Newcastle City Centre.
- Bicentenary sculpture moved to Elemore Eco Park, along with the provision of historical images which were showcased at the launch event.
- Hetton Carnival with a heritage, arts and culture theme, as well as a focus on previous ways of living including recycling, reducing, making-do-and mend to reflect the current times of austerity.
## **Partnerships**
- The adoption of a partnership committee to look at the wider needs of the local community in terms of heritage and culture; to strengthen small organisations and bring together expertise and enthusiasm. Initial projects potentially include the renovation of Nicholas Woods’ Tomb, and a heritage trail.
## **Technology**
- The beginnings of a project to look at opportunities utilise additional technology to bring Hetton Colliery railway in a new way – potentially via virtual reality or similar to optimise opportunities for new audiences.

## **Public Benefit**
The project has been designed to include a diverse offering; so that each element attracts a range of individuals. This approach enables us to reach a wide audience; and benefit a large number of people; from those with little or no knowledge of Hetton Colliery Railway to railway enthusiasts, to those with an interest mining, local and social history, and to raise the aspirations of local children and young people to reach their potential.
The local area suffers due to the community’s level of socio-economic circumstances so projects like Hetton Colliery Railway 200 are ever important in supporting local people to feel a sense of community and belonging.
## **Section 4. Financial Review**
## **4.1 Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves**
Following the Bicentenary celebrations of November 2022 all of our work is very much project based and this is reflected in the year end balance of £8984.33 all of which is restricted for the various ongoing projects all of which incorporate an element of core funding within the grant applications to support the ongoing work of the charity.
HCR200’s Reserves Policy states that reserves amounting to one-third of the Annual Unrestricted Expenditure should be held in reserve and this amount was met at the year end.
