## **2.2 Summary of the main activities in relation to these objects**

In planning our activities for the year we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustees’ meetings.

## **Section 3. Activities and performance**

## **3.1 Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the financial period**

The year in question was our Anniversary year and what a year we had. The 2022 Hetton Carnival took on the theme of ‘steam’ which was followed by a lecture series in Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens and our Anniversary Weekend Conference in November.

Alongside these key events many more smaller events took place in local venues and with local schools as well as major city-wide events as we partnered the City Council with the Stephenson Trail Project events involving yet more local schools and the Elemore Park Project which was developed throughout the year.

As ever the work of the HCR200 project was overseen by a group of committed volunteers who served as Trustees and committee members which certainly helped raise the profile of Hetton, the Colliery Railway, the City of Sunderland and our place in world history.

None of this would have been possible without the support, encouragement and diplomacy of our Projects and events Coordinator, Gemma O’Brien who did a sterling job enacting the various demands of committees and officers whilst at the same time fundraising and keeping all of our stakeholders happy and informed.

To quote Les Turnbull as he gave his lecture at the Conference,

“Forget about the diminished treatment that Hetton has had in the histography of railways, because you have had this Conference take your banner and go and fight for Hetton!”

The work was maintained through the regular meetings of the trustees acting as the Finance and General Purposes’ Committee and also the various sub-committees.

The various sub-committees continued to meet as and when necessary, feeding into the Finance and General Purposes Committee their recommendations.
