Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
This year we have continued our series of talks on subjects relating to the history and heritage of the Ullswater Valley. These generate donations from the general public and we in turn donate half of these proceeds to a charity of the speaker’s choice. The remainder we keep for our general funds. In 2022 FOUW along with a group of volunteers initiated a pilot of phase one habitat surveys in the Matterdale area with the hope it could be extended to the Ullswater Valley with a grant from the Lake District Foundation. The project was supported by Professor Lois Mansfield from the University of Cumbria and a group of volunteers were trained in the methodology and some initial field work was carried out. Contact was made with landowners including The National Trust to gain permission for field studies and further work was planned for 2023. We continue to update the Ullswater Heritage Knowledge Bank, www.ullswaterheritage.org, – an online source of information about the landscape, history and cultural heritage of the valley. This year we have worked with Colin Aldred of Aerial Artwork to add Aerial Tours of the valley to the Heritage Knowledge Bank. These give viewers a completely new perspective of the landscape and its mosaic |
| of habitats. Points of interest are marked on the Aerial Tours and link to additional information on the ullswaterheritage.org website. There are currently 4 Aerial Tours, from Pooley Bridge, Glenridding, Aira Force and Howtown (https://www.ullswaterheritage.org/aerial- tours) We have continued, with the assistance of other organisations, the work with local landowners to open a signed Walking Route, from Penrith Station to Pooley Bridge and the Ullswater Way: ‘The Eamont Way’. This is to enable non motorised access to the Ullswater Valley . We hope to open the route in Spring 2023. In 2022, the trustees of FOUW started planning the ‘Ullswater Year of Art and Landscape’ in 2023. This involved pin pointing locations along the Ullswater Way where artists, both past and present, placed their easels. These locations would be marked in the aerial tours with links to information on the website about the artist. There would also be small QR codes at the locations chosen so that walkers can compare what was painted with the view in front of them. We applied to Barton Community Fund in November 2022 for £1500 of funding for this proposal. |
