Review of the Year 2023
Vicar’s report
For my eighth report as Incumbent, I wish to express my continuing thanks to all who have supported All Saints as we have returned to preCovid routines
-
We have welcomed new members into our church family
-
Three babies and children were baptised in All Saints this year
-
Three of our church family (one adult and two young people) were confirmed at Southwark Cathedral on 25[th] November.
-
Rev Lynn took three funerals
1
-
Rev Solomon Ekiyor was licensed as an Assistant Curate in May and is with us as a Training Curate
-
Sarah Cornick (Southwark Diocesan Ordinand), who was with us for part of her Ordination Training was Ordained in Southwark Cathedral in June
-
The Financial stability of the parish is much improved, however the rising energy costs have been a challenge. We have continued to benefit from the Church of England’s Parish Buying scheme, which has helped to reduce the costs of our energy. Through careful financial management, we have managed to end the year with a small surplus. We have also been able to give an extra £2500 to the Diocese as part of our parish pledge which meant that our pledge for 2023 was £13000. I wish to express my thanks to Roy Dennis for his work as Treasurer, and all who have generously given of their time and money.
-
Our teams have resumed their activities and we held our Summer and Christmas Fairs. We also held our popular Bingo and Cream Teas and our Supper and Quiz events.
-
We are still working to our 3-5 year MAP, we devised in 2019.
-
Our links with two local schools (Hackbrindge Primary and Culvers House Primary) continue and Rev Lynn led the Year 6 Transition sessions for both schools. Hackbridge Primary Year 6 pupils attended a Christingle Service just before Christmas. Rev Lynn was invited to the Culvers House Key Stage 2 Christmas Celebration.
-
Our monthly prayer diary is being used by a number of people, which helps us pray for one another and the work of the parish.
-
On the teaching and learning front the Lectio Divina which began in 2020 has a regular attendance. We completed Mark’s Gospel and are now working our way through Genesis.
-
We held our Easter and Advent Journeys and my thanks goes to our ’Journey Team’ for their support in this.
-
Whilst my thanks go to everyone for their contribution to the ministry and mission of All Saints, my particular thanks go to our church wardens Alan Creber and Ron Alfrey and our PCC Treasurer Roy Dennis for their seen and often unseen contribution to the life and work of All Saints. My thanks also go to Rev Angela
Walford and Rev Solomon Ekiyor. I also thank June Mountsteven our Centre Manager for working with myself and the PCC.
This is just a brief review of 2023. I will be expanding on these and looking to the future in my address at the APCM
With every blessing Rev Lynn Billin 13[th] January 2024
PCC Secretary’s Report
Since last year’s APCM the PCC have met on 11 occasions, this includes the short meeting held following the APCM to the present time. The majority of the meetings have been held via zoom and continue to be on a monthly basis. The centre manager has been invited to join alternate meetings to discuss her report and any issues pertaining to the centre. Several topics have been discussed throughout the year concerning both the church and the All Saints Centre. Approval was given for the necessary maintenance issues that have arisen during the past year to be dealt with, both in the church and in the centre.
Glenda Dennis PCC Secretary
Churchwardens’ Report
I have found the Safeguarding courses I have attended very helpful. In September we had our Quinquennial inspection and we have done some of the things that were highlighted and we have arranged for some work to be done on our roof and gutters in April. Ron Alfrey is working in the grounds on vegetable plots and a raised bed and Sheng Bang is continuing to clean the church-We had a problem with our dishwasher that has now been fixed and a diseased tree has been cut down in the grounds.

Safeguarding
During the year I worked closely with Rev Lynn re the safeguarding, we have worked towards all DBS checks being completed to fall within the three year renewal. We have also made clear the importance of the courses for safeguarding and
2
are working towards people completing these for PCC and YC helpers
Jayne Sales Parish Safeguarding Officer
Mission Action Plan (MAP)
Our new MAP was approved by PCC in January 2020.
Bible Study
Bible Study ran successfully for a number of months, but due to falling numbers I have cancelled the evenings. It was a privilege to lead the studies with folk joining in and making positive input which I felt was enjoyable, and encouraging. Ron Alfrey

Saturday at 9 Men’s Breakfast
Social and Fundraising
This year we had both a Summer and a Christmas fair which between them raised over £1000 pounds, two quiz nights, a number of cream tea /bingo afternoons and a weekly coffee morning. It was a great effort by everybody involved because we raised over £3000 which was much more than we had expected.
Alan Creber
Stewardship
We resumed our Stewardship Sundays this year and focussed on Time and Talents.
Rev Lynn Billin
Young Church
We have run Young Church for most term time Sundays (outside of the All Age Service or special services like Mothering Sunday, Christmas and Easter). We have wonderful children who attend and we all learn from each other. We also have a fantastic team of volunteers running the sessions. Helen coordinates and she with Steph, Mandy Jayne, Maureen T, Pearl and Charlene all ensure that there are two of us covering each time. We use the Roots resources to plan out what we are going to do and follow along with the Lectionary readings that the adults are absorbing back in main church. We aim to offer a mix of activities, based around the Bible reading and in the past year this has included games, discussions, crafts and putting together shoeboxes online for the Christmas appeal.
Helen Woolston
Lectio Divina
Lectio Divina continues to meet on Monday evenings by Zoom. During 2023 we focussed on the Gospel of Mark.
Rev Lynn Billin
On encouraging others we have found that the Men’s breakfast is doing well and we have fun with Ted doing written quizzes and tests our general knowledge.
Ron Alfrey
Easter and Advent Journeys
Last year our Easter Journey centred on Jesus’ death and resurrection and for our Advent Journey we were following Jesus light of the World. Each Journey has themed craft activities and we end with a time of worship. Some of our young people who attended the Journeys when they were children, now come along as helpers. We have a committed team of adult helpers; Pearl, Maureen, Gillian, Helen, Sue, Steph.
Rev Lynn Billin
Sacristy
In many other churches, the role of the sacristan is held by one person, to set up the alter and credence table for every service and to order the bread and wine, candles – all the consumables we need for every service. I am very grateful to Alan Creber who looks after the ordering, and Yi Li Zhang who sets up the altar and washes the vessels after each service. It is an important role in the service of the Lord.
Rev Lynn Billin
Coffee Morning
We are now in our 9[th] year running the Thursday Coffee morning. It has become a very popular morning for the Community. It is a meeting place to get together and catch up with friends and neighbours. Maureen and I make a homemade cake each week and celebrate special celebrations birthdays etc. Everybody is welcome. We occasionally have a group from a Care Home in Wallington who love to come and see us.

Hackbridge Community Lunch club
The Lunch Club has run for another year and has been successful with about 25 people attending each month, Duncan doing the cooking with support from Vannusa, Pat and myself helping out with preparations. Sue taking the money and helping to serve, Doreen helping with setting tables and serving, and then Liz and Tina helping with clearing away and washing up we are very lucking in having them to help. Alan and Ron help to put the tables and chairs away with a lot of other people helping, after we have finished our meal and it’s time to go home June and I balance the books while it’s quieter. At Christmas we have a lovely celebration of a Christmas dinner and Christmas pudding, and have a lot of people interested in coming along to it, we sing carols after the meal with Ron leading the singing also a raffle, everyone has had a good time.
Maureen Videl-Alfrey
Church Cleaning
We are very grateful to Sheng Bang who cleans the church each week.
Rev Lynn Billin
Eco Church & Fair Trade
We continue to work towards becoming more ecofriendly and achieved our Eco Church Silver Award in 2022. The bird feeders are very popular with the local bird life.
Rev Lynn Billin
PermaCulture vegetable plots
On the PermaCulture plots which have been in use now for a few years, I now have the correct PH soil and already onions are doing well. I hope to plant brassicas later when the soil warms up, also tomatoes and potatoes. Thanks to Little Oak Tree company they take good care of the trees and hedged areas, so enabling ample wood chip available for use on weed evasive control, sorry to report the loss of a coxes orange tree which George planted several years ago, and a Rosemary Shrub both to wind damage and leaf mildew. I have constructed a wooden framework for a raised bed which I plan to sow a variety of wildflower seeds to encourage bees which are under threat due to excessive chemical pesticides. Anybody who is interested in this form of horticulture and would like to partake in learning a
sustainable and working framework with nature and not working against it would be welcome Ron Alfrey
Grounds
We had lots of rain last summer so it was very difficult to keep the grounds as neat and tidy as we would have liked. The back path especially now needs a bit of work. Two new rose bushes have been donated by Norman Jones and planted at the entrance to the memorial garden which Maureen as usual keeps neat and tidy. We are grateful to our volunteers Ben and Frank for their help in keeping the maintaining the grounds. Little Oak have pruned the trees and cut the hedges. We have painted the benches which continue to be used by members of the public.

Deanery Synod
Deanery Synod is made up of clergy in the Deanery – in our case Sutton and elected members of laity from each church. All elected to Deanery Synod are also on their respective PCC’s. Deanery Synod meets twice a year. Guest speakers are sometimes invited to speak at Deanery Synod, for example Mark Tomlinson spoke about Sutton Community Works, focussing on Sutton Food Bank.

Building and equipment
The boiler has been more effective following servicing by a different company. Ventilation remains difficult in the Bevan Hall because the Velux windows have stopped working again. Replacement of the system at £6K is the only solution currently on offer. The building exterior woodwork, of the outer doors has suffered from the extreme weather in recent years and the long periods of prolonged rainy weather over winter. The Gardner Hall Fire Exit was replaced with many
5
subsequent hiccups. Replacement of similar doors in the Bevan Hall and Esdaile is to be undertaken by a different contractor who unfortunately has had to postpone the work until into 2024. Replacement of all the ceiling lights for LEDs to be implemented in Jan 2024. Improvements to an outdated gas fitting & boiler efficiency have also been agreed.
