For my seventh report as Incumbent I wish to express my continuing thanks to all who have supported All Saints as we have emerged from the Covid 19 restrictions

2022 was another difficult year as we continued with limited worship until we were able to open fully in the summer. Whilst our Centre fully opened, some of our hirers have not returned or have returned on reduced hours.

This is just a brief review of 2022. I will be expanding on these and looking to the future in my address at the APCM

PCC Secretary’s Report

Since last year’s APCM the PCC have met on 11 occasions, this includes the short meeting held following the APCM to the present time. The majority of the meetings have been held via zoom and continue to be on a monthly basis. The centre manager has been invited to join alternate meetings to discuss her report and any issues pertaining to the centre. Several topics have been discussed throughout the year concerning both the church and the All Saints Centre. The decision was made to re-instate the common cup to take effect on Advent Sunday, participation being on a purely optional basis according to personal preference. Approval was given for the necessary maintenance issues that have arisen during the past year to be dealt with, both in the church and in the centre.

Alan Creber

Early in 2022 we had the finial on the London road frontage of the church repaired and at the end of the year the trees in the church grounds were pruned. I am enjoying being Church Warden and I am being assisted by David, Ron, Maureen and Sheng Bang which seems to be working well. I have complete 2 safeguarding courses which will help me in the pastoral part of my role

Safeguarding

As we continue to work hard to make everyone in our church safe, The Church of England changed us to 3 yearly DBS checks at the start of last year. Jayne and Lynn continue to work on making sure all processes are followed so we have the correct procedures in place. Jayne is working on creating a new list for the DBS checks along with DBS update online where DBS checks are registered which will eventually cut down on the amount of DBS checks we need to do for existing DBS holders within the church , ID will just need to be checked every three years. Members of PCC have been asked to complete Basic and Foundation Safeguarding courses along with the Domestic Abuse course. I would like to thank Alan with the support he has given to help people online with this. Jayne will complete a refresher of Safeguarding leadership in June along with Domestic abuse and safer recruitment courses. We do not have any issues to report which is good, we have a good leadership team and church family who work together to make sure we keep safeguarding at the forefront of our minds. Thank you for your continued support as we move forward with the year.

Young Church

We have run young church during most of 2022-23 financial year. The number of children have been generally fewer than pre-COVID, averaging 5. It has been lovely to have some new regulars in our group as well as welcoming back some children we haven’t seen in a while. The children are super enthusiastic and contribute some amazing ideas and energy to our sessions! We go across to the Community Centre during the singing of the Gloria and any parents/carers arriving a bit after that are welcome to bring their children to join us direct. We have Helen as coordinator. Jayne, Mandy and Steph are young church leaders. Maureen T. And Pearl are young church helpers. We have recruited Charlene as a helper for next financial year. A huge thank you to all of them! We continue to follow the Gospel readings where we can and we present back to the congregation on what we were doing and what we learned. We use the ROOTS magazine and website to help us plan the sessions. Helen Woolston

Lectio Divina

We have been journeying through the book of Mark, reading a short passage each week. We have found the exercise of reading and reflecting on the Bible very informative and interesting, and the discussion that extends from that addresses issues we face in everyday life and in society. It is a very open and comfortable atmosphere in which we can ask questions. It would be great if more people could participate since it is such a great opportunity to spend time in the Bible while exploring so many different aspects of faith and life.

Katy and Jay Shah

Social and Fundraising

We had a very successful year's fundraising consisting of our coffee mornings run by Pat and Maureen, Bingo/cream teas run by Sue with assistance from Glenda, Summer and Christmas fairs which raised about a thousand pounds and a enjoyable and successful quiz night plus the ride

Bible Study

The Lay led Bible study on Tuesday evenings at the Centre is growing with the nucleus of 4 now. We are studying the Acts of the Apostles and have tea or coffee with our biscuits as you would!!!!!!.

Saturday at 9 Men’s Breakfast

The Men’s Breakfast at 9 on the first Saturday of the month is going well at present. We are 6 hungry guys who feast well for £5 each. Talks so far have been done by Adrian, Ted, David and myself. Next month Eddie will deliver his on defeating the Argentine forces who illegally invaded the Falkland Islands in1982.

Easter and Advent Journeys

We had quite a busy Lent journey this time. The children all enjoyed decorating their bags and getting to know each other. The story is read to go with each activity, the children put everything into these crafts. Icing fairy cakes and eating them, a favourite activity. Advent journey was quieter, due to weather conditions. We had the same format as Lent, but obviously the stories were different. The children were amazingly knowledgeable about the Kings journey. We managed so lovely camel masks, and iced biscuits, of course. Both journeys end with a short praise, of prayers and songs, which is sung with gusto. A thoroughly enjoyable and educational afternoon each time.

Bishop’s Certificate in Discipleship

The Bishops Certificate Course is going well with the first module (NT which was taught by Lynn on Tuesday evenings at Trinity House Southwark for some 5 weeks) which I thoroughly enjoyed, clear and well presented by our vicar. I'm submitting Module 2 soon on Remembering the OT. Now on the exploring our identity and the church led by Rev Sam Dennis from Woodside church in SE25 a young guy full of enthusiasm and a great communicator just done the first session. I would highly recommend the course if you want to grow in grace and faith in our Lord Jesus.

Sacristy

In many other churches, the role of the sacristan is held by one person, to set up the alter and credence table for every service and to order the bread and wine, candles – all the consumables we need for every service. I am very grateful to Alan Creber who looks after the ordering, and Yi Li Zhang who sets up the altar and washes the vessels after each service. It is an important role in

Coffee Morning

Maureen and I are now coming into our 7[th] year of running Thursday Coffee Morning in the church each week. We charge £1 for tea, coffee or fresh coffee with homemade cake which we make each week. We also have various biscuits including Gluten Free. It has become a very popular morning. We are very fortunate that if one of us is not available or on holiday, we have another volunteer who attends the coffee morning regularly and if available will stand in for us. Apart from local people, we occasionally get a group from a care home in Wallington with their carers. They really enjoy it. It is a very welcome community morning which makes it all very worthwhile doing.

Pat Hersey and Maureen Vidal-Alfrey

Hackbridge Community Lunch club

We started up our lunch club April 19[th] last year 2022, after Covid closed us down, Barbara Hart and her mum helped us out by doing the preparation and cooking and Liz was also helping out by clearing tables and washing up.

We were very thankful to them all for helping out while Duncan couldn’t do it, and with the help of Vanusa who also washes up and helps to set the tables. We had lots of help with June, Doreen, Sue, Pat and myself serving the dinners and Sue taking the money when they come in. We are lucking to have a good team of people helping us, with Alan and Ron putting the tables and chairs away after we have finished. Barbara was able to help out for 3 months until she couldn’t do it anymore, Duncan has been well enough to come back to do the cooking with lots of help. We have had a good attendance of people coming along each month and numbers have grown with about 25 people which is now our maximum. At Christmas we had a lovely celebration of a Christmas dinner and pudding, with sing along carols after the meal and also a raffle everyone had a good time.

Grounds

Keeping the grounds neat and tidy has been quite a problem for the past year with the extremes of heat, rain and then snow and ice, and not being able to be out in the garden at all. Our volunteer Ben has returned and will be coming on Thursday afternoons to help with strimming (weather permitting), weeding an tidying up, and cleaning inside when raining- doing jobs like cleaning the brass and sweeping round the pews. Ben has cut down the raspberry bushes and we hope to get a good crop for the summer an take it to the lunch club to make a nice dessert. We plan to make a strawberry patch as well for the summer months. Maureen V-A gave us some white begonias to plant which were put in the Remembrance Garden and down the front path. They lasted very well through the summer months. Pat also gave some perennial plants which she had grown, these were put down the front path as well and will be coming into flower this year. Rita gave tow lots of money to buy plants and I bought a red rose for a pot at the side of the bench by the path (in remembrance of Chris’ wife), and also plants next to the three benches at the back of the garden that are in remembrance for other people. I planted quite a few bulbs of various types of daffodils in small pots and they are placed down the path and are starting to shoot for a nice display in spring. The back path and border are now needing attention and Ben has been helping with the weed there.

Maureen Tomkinson & Alan Creber

produced good yield in the first picking an a fair yield in the Autumn. Ben a volunteer working with our Maureen has been particularly useful and gets the work done as he is instructed. I am planting seed potatoes next month and when the soil is dried out several in sets ready for harvesting in June (God willing). Alan has helped with

conveying good top soil from the vicarage via a wheel barrow and my son who is a director of Little Oak Tree kindly offered chippings from the arisings of the work which was done in the Autumn at the rear of the Church building. Fingers crossed for this season.

Deanery Synod

Deanery Synod is made up of clergy in the Deanery – in our case Sutton and elected members of laity from each church. All elected to Deanery Synod are also on their respective PCC’s. Deanery Synod meets three times a year. Guest speakers are sometimes invited to speak at Deanery Synod, for example Mark Tomlinson spoke about Sutton Community Works, focussing on Sutton Food Bank.

Churches Together in Beddington & Wallington

There not a lot to say this year. Two Churches Together people are retiring this year. Two people from our church went to the world day prayer. It was a good service. Once a year the Churches Together have a service at All Saints Carshalton. it went well. I could not make it I am not sure what else is going on at the moment

Carol Beer

Vegetable patch and fruit trees

I'll start with veg and fruit last seasons crops were dismally poor due to the drought, which occurred in the growing season and I was way for 5 weeks which added to the problem. A common problem is the soil and its stony make up and of course the habitual presence of our gastopods the slugs and snails .not being able use effective deterrents i.e. bird friendly? So this year to combat the little nuggets, I have embarked on the old fashion deterrent the crushed egg shell formula and hoping it will be effective. The raspberry canes

Staff

The Centre Office continues to be staffed by June Mountsteven, the part time, 20hrs, Centre Manager, together with Ken Hersey and Pat Hersey who both give their time - as signatory to the CAF account and to assist in answering e-mails and keeping expenditure records. Keeping the Centre clean and welcoming were Vanusa Quental 10 hrs pw and Helen Deards. 5 hrs pw. Beth Joined the staff for 6 months otherwise there has remained a vacancy for an alternate weekend and evening Centre Assistant, responsible for cleaning, welcoming one-off users and security.

Hirers

These User groups have remained when Pandemic rules allowed : 30 groups met at the Centre in 2019 reduced to the 13 below in 2022

Children's Groups, Dance, Humpty Dumpty Nursery, Karate for Children TheatreBug

Centre's Finances for 2022

The Centre expenditure of £37,000, has dropped a little in 2022, allowing £2000 to be moved to Church Funds. This is due to continued reduction in staff costs since 2019. The Centre's hire income recovered to £41.386 with Covid Restrictions lifted. There is £12,000 in the CAF Account and £19,000 continues to remains held in the deposit account at December 2022. £20K is considered sufficient reserve against contingencies, redundancies and urgent repairs.

Building and equipment

The boiler struggles to heat the whole building in extreme cold weather but has managed to run this year. The Velux windows have stopped working again. Replacement of the system at £6K is the only solution currently on offer, hence they remain out of use. The building exterior woodwork has suffered from the extreme weather of the year, long periods of intense heat in the summer, then prolonged wet followed by long hard frosts December. Replacement and repair of doors has been agreed for 2023.
