HEREFORD ROUND TABLE REPORT OF THE CHAIRMAN

FOR THE PERIOD 1 APRIL 2020 TO 31 MARCH 2021

About Hereford Round Table

Hereford Round Table is a modern movement with the members at its heart, the Round Table Movement today remains true to its founder’s vision, is proud of its successes, and more than ready to welcome the next generation.

Founded to give young men a place to meet, make friends, and exchange ideas, the Round Table is non-religious, non-political and non-sectarian, and has as much to offer men today as it did when it started in 1927.

As important as what the Round Table is, is what it isn’t. If you think the Round Table is a closed, secret society that belongs to the past, you couldn’t be further from the truth.

Much more than just a club or an association, the Round Table is a vibrant movement whose 8,000 members meet regularly in 600 clubs around the UK to see friends, have fun, and get involved in their local communities.

The energy that members bring to Table forms friendships, shapes lives and makes a lasting difference to many people beyond the movement itself.

Aims and Objectives

  1. To develop the acquaintance of young men through the medium of their professional and business occupations.

  2. To emphasise the fact that one’s calling offers and excellent medium of service to the community.

  3. To cultivate the highest ideal in business, professional and civic traditions.

  4. To recognise the worthiness of all legitimate occupations and to dignify each his own by precept and example.

  5. To further the establishment of peace and goodwill in international relationships.

  6. To further these objects by meetings, lectures, discussions and other activities.

Round Table Grace

“May we O Lord adopt thy creed, adapt our ways to serve thy need, and we who on thy bounty feed improve in thought, in word and deed”

HEREFORD ROUND TABLE REPORT OF THE CHAIRMAN FOR THE PERIOD 1 APRIL 2020 TO 31 MARCH 2021

Chairmans Report

It was a great honour to be asked by Rob Davies to be his VC. I accepted quickly as I had a drink and felt confident that I had plenty of time to prepare with it being 2 years before the role would begin.

Later that year I learned the news that Rob would be leaving roundtable, a huge loss all round but one that brought up the question of who to be chairman? Nicola was pregnant, work was dynamically busy and demanding….

Long story short - I felt I would regret it if I didn’t take on the opportunity, so in blind faith, I accepted the challenge. And duly set about making plans for handover, chairing council meetings for Rock the barn, meetings after programme events, visiting the racecourse to discuss plans for Fireworks and deciding who would fill the roles of the various officers etc. It seems so strange to look back on that time. We knew nothing then of how everything as we knew it would be affected and changed by a coronavirus.

Roundtable went into standby, one by one each event got cancelled, members grew beards, shaved heads, shared conspiracy theories on the new world order, baked breads, shared pictures of the same gentleman in many different topical situations and convened on video conferencing apps to hold quizzes and drink together. As a group I really felt we pulled together and offered each other the support and grounding that we probably didn’t realise we needed, both through the WhatsApp group and various zoom meetings.

Every time we communicated, despite the jokes and making fun of each other and sending memes of said gentleman - it wasn’t long before the conversation quickly turned back to how we could raise money, what we could do to do more. There were several members who helped out with Rotary’s endeavours. But something that felt uniquely Hereford Round Table was what we were all getting at.

2 Wheels 2 Legs was born, it had been chatted about as a concept for a while amongst the cyclists in the group but bringing everyone together felt right and with a number of the group not being cyclists it was felt a healthy competitive approach would be to bring in a team of walkers. So, the idea was a team of walkers and a team of cyclists set off from Snowdon in the pitch black at 5am. The walkers would have to ascend and descend the Welsh 3 peaks Snowdon. Cadair Idris and Pen y Fan and the riders would have to cycle to Brecon…

The day we set off, 3 October 2020 - a named storm (Alex) blew up from the continent. But we persevered. It was an incredible day with the cyclists getting within 10 miles of Brecon with the whole team still intact, sticking together as a unit despite huge differences in fitness levels.

Most of the walkers completed the 3 peaks and were well in the dry by the time the bike ride came to an end. Debate then ensued over the validity of each team's achievement! But the bottom line was we raised £6000 with no cost.

I would like to thank all of those involved who helped piece together the adventure. Jason Hicks for his organisation, Ben Williams for his support as Vice-Captain, and past chairman Phil Rowberry for his calm advice and steady guidance.

I wish Ben Williams well for his year and know that we will only go from strength to strength. The talent that lies around the table is undeniable. We just need to find that last bit of motivation as we clamber out of the strangest of times and re focus on fostering our community spirit, socialising ethos, and commitment to programme events. All credit however to the members of Hereford Roundtable for making it through in one piece, you have an uncanny ability to think outside the box, thank you for letting me be your Chairman.
