During the reporting year the following initiatives have helped preserve and protect the good health of our members:

1. The purchase of a wood lathe offers members the opportunity to further enhance their skills by learning woodturning through training sessions given by a member experienced in this field.

2. The increasing range of ecofriendly wooden items we make, such as hedgehog homes, insect hotels and sparrow boxes as well as larger items like benches and plant containers enables members to share and expand their woodworking skills.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

3. The installation of more raised beds at our allotment has made it easier for members to tend to their plants.

4. The introduction of a communal session in the spacious and relaxing surroundings of the Rhiwbina Community Hub is proving to be popular and an opportunity for members to socialise, make friends and improve their confidence by giving talks on various topics.

5. The various community-based initiatives we undertake continues to benefit the public, such as the following items we made for local groups:

   - Plant beds and a tree tub for a new community gardening run by the Whitchurch Art Library gardening group.

   - Way-marker boards for the Walking Whitchurch Heritage Group.

   - Wheelchair friendly raised plant beds and a wooden bench for a wellbeing garden at Maindy Barracks.

   - A renovated sweet cart used to promote Cardiff City Hospice.

Section D Achievements and performance

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

During the reporting year membership of the Den increased to seventeen meaning that four more men have benefitted from the friendship and camaraderie we have to offer.

The new Monday morning social sessions at the Rhiwbina Hub are very popular and offer members, particularly those who may be less keen on practical activities, an opportunity to relax and enjoy each other’s company in comfortable surroundings regardless of the weather conditions.

We have expanded the range of wooden items we make and have increased the number of venues where we display and sell those items and promote the Den.

We also continue to support local organisations by making and installing items that benefit the community, notably:

- the plant beds and tree tub we made for the new community gardening run by the Whitchurch Art Library gardening group,

- the way-marker boards we made for the Walking Whitchurch Heritage Group,

- the wheelchair friendly raised plant beds and wooden bench we made for the wellbeing garden at Maindy Barracks,

- the promotional sweet cart we renovated for Cardiff City Hospice, and

- the security gate we made and installed for the Rhydypennau Hub.

All these achievements are consistent with the results of a survey of members undertaken in the previous reporting year, notably members wish to find a venue for purely social gathers and a desire to undertake work that benefits the community.

## **Section F Other optional information**

During the reporting period we launched our own Facebook page to make us more visible to the community.

Preliminary discussions were held with a representative from All Saints Church in Rhiwbina about the possibility of the Den using a large building at the rear of the church as a new base for the Den. We also met a local funding officer at the National Lottery to discuss the possibility of obtaining a grant to cover the cost of converting the building into a useable space for the Den.
