## **BOARD REPORT** 

It has been a very busy few months with emphasis on getting more men to attend. We have succeeded in this and now have large groups attending both Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. 

This consists of 13 men booked for Tuesdays – 11 every week and 2 fortnightly 

14 men booked for Thursdays- 10 every week , 2 fortnightly and 1 when  able. 

We have had 20 enquiries in the past 2 months

We have men with varying abilities. Now have 3 gentlemen who are immobile, 1 who is blind, 3 with learning disabilities, 7 with dementia, 1 with PTSD, 1 involved with safeguarding. 

With these complexities we need to ensure we can meet their needs and cannot consider extra groups until we are sure we have sufficient staff and volunteers. It has been necessary to employ Steve until December to cover leave and

support HJ. He has been great and we really would have struggled without him. He is innovative, has foresight, sees what needs to be done, assesses risks and is able to manage 1:1 or men in groups. 

## Gentleman’s story 

Nigel was referred by CMHT. They felt that he needed to have some social interaction and his wife was struggling at home.  He has a keen interest in classic cars and according to his wife has a garage full of them. He worked most of his life as a caretaker at a school.   He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and was being seen by CMHT as he presented with some ‘irritability’ which wife was struggling with. He was initially brought to the farm to ‘have a look’ by his care worker from CMHT and then a visit was planned, and he spent time going around the farm with a member of staff and meeting some of the men. It is evident that Nigel has short-term memory loss and some word-finding difficulties. He was lacking in confidence and appeared anxious. 

At the next visit he stayed a little longer and enjoyed walking round and feeding the donkeys. He commented that everything was ‘so tidy’ and we were ‘doing a good job’.   It was agreed that Nigel would come again for the session . He arrived with a carer who explained that he had been very reluctant to come and she did not know how long he would stay. He stayed for the whole session! Carer was away the next week so CMHT supported him to come and his wife picked him up. By now Nigel was relaxed and engaging in conversation with other men. I introduced his wife to another wife and they chatted away about their roles and how they manage. 

Outcome- Nigel is now attending weekly. He has made friends. Last session he sat chatting with two other men, was laughing making jokes. He is accepted in the group. His wife has exchanged telephone numbers with other wife whose son it transpires had helped to reupholster one of Nigel’s cars and has now been to visit him again and taken him for a drive. We hope that Nigel will continue to develop and hope to introduce him to some small carpentry projects. His wife is keen to attend the Carers group. 

CUK is about acceptance, creating a space where men can feel safe and make friendships. It works to their strengths and staff/vols are patient and provide support for men to find their way whatever their ability. It also creates support and connections for their family. 

## Next steps 

Our next step is to work on volunteer recruitment. We clearly need good, reliable, trained volunteers to look after the men. We will be contacting Dorset Volunteer Centre and Dorset Community Action Network, publishing on Social Media, working with GP surgeries and attending any appropriate events. 

Website- we are aware of need to redesign our website although we have had several referrals from this so it is effective. Working with  Board member, Lottie and Maumbury Design we plan to launch a new website which reflects the Dorset

work and our growth and is interactive and will also work for professionals. Safeguarding Policies has been updated and added. 

Engagement- events next year plan to improve our connections with the community but more importantly with Dorset County Council and NHS. We plan in January to set out 4 events which will bring in important people and organisations and create the role of Ambassador. 

Paperwork/recording- daily and monthly review session records are kept. Monthly review will be updated in November to show how the groups are meeting the men’s individual goals. All individual photo albums are up to date. 

Site management- Liz now having meetings with Julie to understand what is happening on the farm and how CUK can fit in. Hopefully this will reduce any possible friction or concern about groups and help us to work together with young people. Joint meeting to be held in February 2024. 

Policiesall policies which were in record book have been updated, to be checked by Board. Unaware if there are any new policies we should be devising- how would we know this for the future? Attached policies for Board to agree.

We continue to apply for grants, have specifically been trying for a new tramper which is much needed especially with more men with mobility problems being referred. We would also like to purchase new publicity banners.
