The repertoire for the performances, both public and for outreach performances is devised by the Festival Director, Ben Tarlton, who reports to Andrew Elliott for the Trustees’ approval.
The Charity’s work:
The main focus of the charity is to produce chamber music concerts to a very high professional standard in Llantwit Major church, usually towards the end of March each year.
Before the main festival in December 2023, a winter concert was given mainly for the Friends of the Festival by Ben Tarlton and the international classical guitarist George Tarlton. They also visited schools on the outreach project
The festival this year consisted of five concerts .
The first on Friday 22[nd] March which included a first performance of a commissioned work by Edward-Rhys Harry, as well as works by Arensky and Schubert.
The Saturday morning “Coffee Concert” featured two of the festival’s soloists playing solo Bach.
For the Saturday evening, there were performances of a Mozart Piano Quartet and the Schumann Piano Quintet.
On the Sunday afternoon we welcomed players from the Worshipful Company of Musicians who sponsored the concert. The performers were a singer, a horn player and a pianist.
The final concert on the Sunday consisted of performances of the Ravel Piano Trio and Tchaikovsky’s String Sextet.
All the concerts were attended by a good number of people and were enthusiastically received.
All these concerts were held in St Illtuds’ church Llantwit Major by kind permission of the Rector, Reverend Canon Edwin Counsell.
As well as performing concerts for the public, the musicians performed several outreach concerts in local schools and care homes. For this, the LMCMF was fortunate in securing funding from the Waterloo Foundation.
This work is a very important factor, as the Festival Director, Ben Tarlton, is passionate about bringing high quality music to as many people a possible.
The idea is to introduce classical music to young people (age 4 and up, mainly primary schools) by playing short, often virtuoso pieces to the children, asking for feedback and then inviting them to come up and conduct the players, something they really enjoy doing. We have noticed especially good concentration from the children and we know this will make a lasting impression on them, especially as provision for music in schools is not a high priority these days.
In the last few years, we have visited certain schools several times with different instrumental combinations, and are always warmly welcomed back.
These outreach performances are at no cost to the schools, as they are fully funded by the Waterloo Foundation.
Where the money is from:
1)First and foremost, from sponsors large and small.
2)From ticket sales and funding from the “Friends” of the festival who give each year to support us.
3)We also received a substantial sum from Gift Aid in March 2024
4)We run a bar each night (with a licence) and this makes a profit, although we do not charge high amounts for the drinks.
Where the money has been spent
1) Fees and travel expenses for the 8 performers. They are hosted as guests in private homes but the cost of providing main meals during the week is met by the Festival.
2) Costs are also involved with publicity, printing of programmes, posters and fliers. Piano hiring and tuning (this year it was £2,000), Website fee, and hire of the church. This year we also had a fee for the composer’s commissioned work.
This year there were five performances with very good audiences for each concert, providing good ticket revenue.
Publicity is :-
1) Via word of mouth

3) An increase in the number of “Friends”
4) A paid for advert in the local paper, which was well worth while.
- 5) Regular posts on Facebook.
At the end of the financial year we had sufficient money left from the Waterloo Foundation grant, to fund the outreach concerts for ‘24-’25, plus a small surplus.
We have a new volunteer Fund Raiser.
We will also receive Gift Aid payment during this financial year.
