Para 1.20 Fitzjohns Community Food (operating as
Fitzjohns Food Bank for the purposes of Charity
Commission registration) connects members of
the local community who have time to give with
those who need support. Based at Christ Church
and open weekly on Monday afternoons, the
project has become an increasingly important
part of the local response to food insecurity and
the cost-of- living crisis, working closely with
partner organisations including the Lewes
District Food Partnership and the Sussex
Community Development Association to provide
coordinated and holistic support.
The project supports individuals and families
facing a wide range of challenges, including loss
or changes in income, ill-health, disability, low or
insecure wages, caring responsibilities, housing
instability and relationship breakdown. Many
members experience multiple and overlapping
forms of disadvantage.
Over the past year, Fitzjohns Community Food
has continued to grow and strengthen its offer.
Between 1 August 2024 and 31 July 2025, the
project had around 100 active member
households and supported around 60
households weekly, which equates to around
150 people (including children). Each household
receives at least three days’ worth of fresh and
dryfood,alongside essential household items

such as toiletries, cleaning products, baby supplies and pet food, typically to the value of around £40. Fitzjohns also provides a range of volunteering opportunities to members of the community, enabling social connections and contributions and providing training opportunities, particularly in our community kitchen. Fitzjohns 42 active volunteers, contributing around 3000 volunteer hours a year. A key development has been the transition to, and consolidation of, a Community Food Club model, now in its third year. New members receive an initial six weeks of free support, after which they are asked to contribute £3.50 per week. This approach helps shift the dynamic from emergency provision to a more dignified, community-based model, where members are active participants rather than passive recipients. The contribution enables greater food choice, improves quality and range, and supports the sustainability of the project. Feedback from members has been overwhelmingly positive, with 95% reporting that they found the provision good value for money and the same amount said it "helped them worry less about the cost of living crisis" and they felt "welcomed and valued as a member".

The project has also expanded beyond food provision to offer a wider package of support. A community café, providing hot meals and refreshments, is now a central part of the offer, creating a warm and welcoming space for social connection. Members can also access social activities, community events, volunteering opportunities, and one-to-one support through a Community Navigator, who supports members on a 1-2-1 basis with issues such as benefits, housing, debt, etc. We also run a Hardship Fund where members can apply for support for unexpected & emergency costs and grants of between £50-£500. 34 Hardship Fund requests were supported in the period between July 2024 and August 2025

Fitzjohns supports the wider community by offering a consistent and reliable service, one that people know about and feel comfortable to refer their friends and neighbours to. Our services are accessible and people can self-refer meaning that they can access support quickly and without unnecessary and stigmatising barriers. This builds trust and a sense of

belonging in the community, especially for those that volunteer with the project. Our Community Events (BBQs, autumn harvest, etc) are open to all and bring together different groups of people to celebrate community and good food, contributing to a neighbourhood that knows and looks out for each other and "breaks bread together".

Tax reclaims on donations

Gift Aid receivable is included in income when there is a valid declaration from the donor.
Any Gift Aid amount recovered on a donation is considered to be part of that gift and is
treated as an addition to the same fund as the initial donation unless the donor or the
terms of the appeal have specified otherwise.
Contractual income and

This is only included in the SoFA once the charity has provided the related goods or
services or met the performance related conditions.
Donated goods are measured at fair value (the amount for which the asset could be

The cost of any stock of goods donated for distribution to beneficiaries is deemed to be
the fair value of those gifts at the time of their receipt and they are recognised on receipt.
In the reporting period in which the stocks are distributed, they are recognised as an
expense at the carrying amount of the stocks at distribution.
Donated goods for resale are measured at fair value on initial recognition, which is the
expected proceeds from sale less the expected costs of sale, and recognised in 'Income
from other trading activities' with the corresponding stock recognised in the balance
sheet. On its sale the value of stock is charged against 'Income from other trading
activities' and the proceeds from sale are also recognised as 'Income from other trading
activities'.
Goods donated for on-going use by the charity are recognised as tangible fixed assets
and included in the SoFA as incoming resources when receivable.
Gifts in kind for use by the charity are included in the SoFA as income from donations
when receivable.

the gift to the charity provided the value of the gift can be measured reliably.
