Objectives and Activities
The purpose of the charity is to support families whose lives are affected by mitochondrial disease. To raise awareness of mitochondrial disease. And to raise funds for research into mitochondrial disease, as well as giving families days out where they can come together with others, share experiences and understanding of the same or similar issues affecting each other.
The objectives are to enhance the lives of people who have a degenerative disorder for which there is no cure or treatment. Because it is a rare condition and people often feel isolated, allowing people to meet others going through the same thing.
We offer a family fun day out in places all over the country including adults with mitochondria disease. Sometimes with a medical expert present to inform the family of any new developments in the field of mitochondrial disease. New medications or trials.
As the condition can be quite isolating we feel it is important to ensure the mitochondrial families we support feel included and part of our ‘mito family’.
We have continued monthly zoom calls with the families which have been very useful and have had encouraging feedback. We are continuing to have the bereaved parents zoom call which we find there is still a need for.
Our main event this year was a family day at Magna science centre in Yorkshire.
Fundraisers continue to raise funds for Leigh Network with an amazing amount of £2.000 being raised from running the Manchester marathon. Plus various other donations. Charity sales as well as raising awareness of mitochondrial disease.
Leigh Network continues to deliver blankets to sick children spending time in hospital. Also butterfly boxes to families who are struggling with coming to terms with diagnosis.
We continue to raise funds, by doing sponsored events and coffee mornings.
