## **TOE BEANS CAT RESCUE CHARITY NO: 1194490**
## **JANUARY - DECEMBER 2022 ANNUAL REVIEW**
## **CONSTITUTION**
Toe Beans went through many vicissitudes during this year, although it had established itself in the locality, it suffered with the loss of volunteers and trustees. The constitution however remained a constant.
1. For the benefit of the public to rescue, rehabilitate, rehome or otherwise provide for the welfare and relief of suffering of unwanted or unowned cats in need of care and attention in and around Uttlesford District Council area, Essex, and to provide accommodation and facilities for those purposes.
2. To promote humane behaviour towards cats by advising and educating the public on welfare matters and the prevention and relief of cruelty and suffering.
## **CATS**
Toe Beans cared for 53 cats throughout the year. Cats coming into Toe Beans are cared for by Foster Carers in their own homes and some in addition have catios. The 4 catios purchased the preceding year were completed and/or reinstalled when carers left.
Of the 53 cats that Toe Beans helped throughout the year, 45 were rehomed successfully and we are always pleased to hear how they have settled. Some cats are rehomed on a home to home (H2H) basis, there were 8 cats in this category
All cats are neutered (if old enough), vaccinated, defleaed, wormed and microchipped before they go to their new homes.
We helped 5 feral cats. Strays are tested for FIV – FeLV and cats that are judged to be at risk, injured or ill, or after discussion with a vet, as per Cats Protection Vet Guide 2019 are also tested.
**Trapping and Microchipping** have occurred to some extent throughout the year.
## **Examples of cats we have cared for:**
Mavis was in need of an operation to remove a cancerous ear; a GoFundMe page was set up the cover the cost of this.
Lily was trapped after she had been seen hanging around the supermarket in Saffron Walden, she was taken to the vet and her owner found. The owner was persuaded to get her cat neutered.
Manfield was another large stray entire male cat hanging around the same supermarket, trapped and taken into foster care, after which an extensive search was done to try and find his owner. He was added to National Database Registers, advertised on social media, vets were written to but to no avail. After a local newspaper article an adopter came forward. Manfield was with us for 4 months.
Crumble had escaped from his minder, whilst his owner was on holiday. We helped with posters in the area from which he went missing, he had been seen several times in the vicinity, so a trap was set and within 24 hours he was caught, a scan and his microchip confirmed he was Crumble and he was reunited with his very happy owner.
Rocky was on a home to home (H2H), he underwent a routine castration before going to his new home. Unfortunately, he had a reaction to the anaesthetic, and this resulted in a large vet bill. We did a GoFundMe page and raised the funds to cover the vet bill. He recovered and is now living happily with his brother Ross.
## **VOLUNTEERS**
## FOSTER CARERS
The year started with 5 Foster carers looking after 9 cats. There was a high turnover of foster carers with a variety of reasons given for not continuing. Foster caring is a demanding job as it requires constant care twenty-four hours a day. Many find that it is too demanding, they take a break but then don’t return. The year ended with a stalwart 4 carers looking after 7 cats.
## TRUSTEES
The start of 2022 saw another resignation of an original founder trustee. This person was also the designated Fund-Raising Co-ordinator. Despite people saying they would help as a fundraiser the co-ordinators position remained unfilled by the end of the year.
June/July 2022 saw several more trustees handing in their resignation leaving just two of the founder members. An additional three trustees were found to replace them. These three Trustees were still in place at the end of the year but the remaining founder members resigned in the October.
## LOST & FOUND TEAM
The recording of lost & found cats had already been established and two ‘back room’ recorders were added to the team. Using social media as a tool for recording lost cats, found cats and using this information to help with either matching lost cats with their owners. The team recorded 274 missing, lost and found cats, with 50% having a known outcome. There is a need for more scanning angels, who would be able to go out and scan a found cat to check for a microchip. There are still too many cats that are not microchipped.
## **PUBLICITY**
The majority of Toe Beans publicity is via the Social Media outlets, i.e., Facebook with a business page, a page for VIC Very Important Cats, and Fundraising; Instagram; NextDoor and Cat Chat. During the year the SSL certification was received and implemented on our web page. https://www.toebeanscatrescue.org.uk/
## **FUNDRAISING**
Many events took place to raise funds, fun days on Saffron Walden common, having a stall at the Thaxted Fete & Dog Show, A raffle set up by one of the volunteers and another Raffle at Easter. As well as fundraising these events help with the publicity of Toe Beans, though these events do need a lot of volunteer hours, in the preparation, transportation, staffing the stall and packing up.
In September a local music festival, chose us as their charity for the festival, they needed our participation but this very successfully raised a lot of money. £1216
Due to the lack of a fundraising co-ordinator some of the ideas for fundraising fell by the wayside as volunteers felt overwhelmed by the amount of time expected of them.
Toe Beans has been accepted as Pets @ Home Saffron Walden Charity of the year, but this is unlikely to be until 2023.
Grants were received from Stansted Airport & Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust.
## **CONCLUSION**
The Trustees would also like to thank those who were volunteers in 2022 for their input.
Despite the clear turmoil of 2022 and with the possibility of Toe Beans closing due to lack of volunteers, the Trustees left the Christmas period open with a clear decision as to its future to be made in the New Year, 2023. With the appointment of a new Manager/Co-ordinator, a new Treasurer, a Fostering Co-ordinator and an Advisor, the established Lost & Found Team, and several foster carers, and volunteers, the Trustees look forward to reporting on the next year 2023 of Toe Beans Cat Rescue. The 2022 year ended with 3 trustees and 12 volunteers.
## TREASURER’S FINANCE REPORT
The treasurer resigned as a Trustee in 2022 and covered only minimal duties until a new treasurer was found. It was agreed by the Trustees that a new bank account would be opened, but this took much longer than anticipated.
Income during the year was allocated to four areas. General donations from the public, donations received from people adopting cats and kittens, fundraising projects and grants. The general/adoption donations accounted for over 70% of the income.
Vets bills accounted for the majority of Toe Bean’s expenditure, amounting to 74% of financial outgoings. During the year, Toe Beans also spent funds on the upkeep and maintenance of the catios including repairs and netting. Equipment was also purchased which included cat traps, gloves, scanner, microchips. Logo tops and a printer. Running costs also included cat transportation, medicine and consumables such as cat litter. Finance costs mainly related to the receipt of
donations via PayPal. Toe Beans also purchased insurance which included liability cover.
Although there was an excess of income over expenditure at the year end, these funds primarily related to the grant income of £2,500. These funds are earmarked for specific expenditure during 2023.
At the end of the financial year, Toe Beans had an outstanding financial liability of £817 which related to a vet bill. This liability was sufficiently covered by the credit balance held in the Toe Bean’s bank account and the intention is to pay this early in the new accounting period.
Toe Beans has yet to register with HMRC for Gift Aid, and this is an area the Trustees will consider further during 2023.
