Bethel Free Church Trustees, Annual Report (Coljllnutsd) Year ended 31 December 2024 Objectives and activities Objectives: The Objectives ol the CIO are, lor the public benefit.. the advancement ol the Christian lailh in Leeds in accordance with the Slalement ol Faith and such other parts ol the United Kingdom and tha world as the Charity Trustees may from lime to lime decide. Activities: Although we remain conscious and alert to any new public health issues since the Covid 19 pandemic, in particular in regard lo mental health issues in adult and young people, and these will impact upon our capacity and abilities lo respond lo any given situation, never-the-less we have returned to and extended normal levels ol activity where volunteers and lime allow.. A plan lo open up the Church as a 'warm space. under the Local Authority scheme was unable lo go ahead as we were unable lo obtain advice from them in regard lo our kitchen facilities in time. In principle, improvements were agreed and plans lo upgrade the kitchen area ar& now in place and relevant members are undertaking training in the necessary Food Hygiene Certillcales. Other aetivities: Distribution 01750 'Good News, papers each month lo local families. Rolaled personal visits lo 170 families who have been contacted via this general distribution and wish contact with someone from the Church. Throughout the year a monthly book-lable, ollering free Bibles and Christian Books look place in the local Town Slreel. This continues lo be popular with many local families and individuals, both UK and world citizens, and by God's grace we intend lo continue il as an ongoing Servi￿ lo these peoples from differing cultures, communities and COLJnlri8s whom we would not meet in our normal distribution area. Although sometimes our regular liming conflicts with another group there have been no issues and we respect each other's right and desire lo be there. A themed Children's Book Table has been run b￿lce in 2024 at the end ol school-lerms whore larnilies and local children have been invited to lind a reading or colouring book lor use in the school holidays. Books for the parents have also been freely available and Bibles on request. Bethel look part in Iwo local 'Communily Festivals, and hosted a'MacMillian' Collee allernoon. Mike has continued taking assemblies al a local primary school, where he is also a Governor with lead responsibility lor safeguarding. Mike continues lo support lo¢al primary s¢hools lo resist any allempls by radical groups to press their views on school policies and practices that would have be&n damaging lo the pupils and stall's mental and emotional we11being and attended the lrtal 'anli- knife and organised crime inilialives. Nancy Obinwa has also become a School Governor and taken on the lead role ol SEND Governor. Bethel provided an inleraclive Bible Exhibition for the local school and Workbooks lor RE on Christianity lo assist teachers with minimal preparation lor the Christian part ol the syllabus. Bethel has used ils links and contacts lo provide an opportunity lor residential groups from the school and stall al a reduced cost, bul these have not yel been taken up. The member ol stall currently responsible is due lo retire and this oller will be made again once the new person has been idenlilied. Bethel was again able to be a conduit lor the distribution ol Christmas presents for families in need

Mike undertakes occasional leadership ol a local walking group lor those men who are socially isolated and al risk ol sell-harm (suicide amongst young men is reported lo be in lop 10°k lor England). Mike is available lo lake Funeral services ol individuals who had some association wlh Bethel il the family requests that we undertake this last act lor them. This ollered free as many families struggle lo pay lor the basic funeral, even so many are now diverted into the low-cosl cremation service approach. This is now raising issues regarding the relative's unfulfilled bereavement and Bethel members are sought out lor comfort, guidance and emotional support. Where mor8 expert support is required people are supported lo access Ih8se. Any monies forthcoming lo the church or individuals from ollering Funerals are paid into the Church account. Mike has had lo be extensively involved with those attending church In.. resolving inheritance claims,. searching lor lost relatives.. encouraging people lo make Wills., supporting those who appear lo have been tricked into coming to UK on promise ol non-exisling work and liaising with Immigration Department when required. Telephone and email support is made available lo anyone in the Community who needs il and where appropriate lace lo lace meetings took place. Genera1 Sunday seNices and midweek meetings remained open to all adults who wished lo allend and could respect others. rights lo be present and not feel intimidated. 'Sunday School, Limited and lime sensitive financial support lo those known lo the church whose income does not meel their needs eg. Paying a phone bill lo allow continued communication and access lo Universal Credit accounts. Advice and assistance in ensLJrino homes are warm, dry and sale. Ulilizing new and traditional methods, we have sought all those who allend lo become'good neighbours. or friends, lo any in need whilst endeavouring lo protect Ihose volunteers ollering such services from over commitment or 6xploilalion. The Elder and pastoral team have also.. continued lo support one family through the Family Court process,. engaged with Children's Services or Schools on behalf ol children and families lo ensure fairness and understanding., supported individuals into work., continued lo raise the dillicully local lamilies have ol obtaining inexpensive Photo ID, as the local Agency failed aller one success lo work with a private company ollering such services. Bethel has been invited to take a major part in the local ComTnunily Days in 2024. Throughout 2024, Bethel saw an increase in those allending who originate from outside the UK and who w&re unknown lo each other before allending. We have, by therefore become an 'inl&rnalional church. and created a 'lamilY where people feel welcomed, supported and encouraged. 11 is rare lor anyone who comes into the church for the first lime not to have some complicating issues and whilst our first priority lo spread the Christian message, we believe we are following the Lord's example ol His love lo all in seeking lo address their whole needs. Consequently, by God's grac6, we are able to continue lo serve the Armley and New Wortley Communities in His Name and are a recognised, respected and received addition to the Community.
