## **Trustees Report 2025 Adroddiad Ymddiriedolwyr**

## **Public Benefit**

The charity has offered important public benefit this year with the focus primarily on our first charitable objective to ‘relieve suffering and distress amongst persons endangered by accidents or natural hazards and to provide adequate arrangements for the secure and efficient search and rescue of any person or persons so endangered in and around Snowdon but not exclusively’.

## **Operational updates**

In 2025 we continued to see an increasing demand on the team. It was the busiest year ever for the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, with 358 call outs that resulted in 214 deployments. This continued to build on the 327 call outs we saw in 2024. During 2024, the Team sadly attended 9 fatalities. We had 48 members of the rescue team involved in deployments, with a number of other volunteers supporting operational and administrative roles.

These recorded call outs do not include the considerable extra work carried out to maintain equipment, look after vehicles, training, committee meetings, work groups meetings, the admin work, Trustee meetings and other tasks required to run the charity.

The Team gets operational support from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, usually from the crew of the Caernarfon Search and Rescue Helicopter, with whom the Team has a superb working relationship. We also receive support from the Wales Air Ambulance, Welsh Ambulance Service, the RAF Mountain Rescue Team and neighboring mountain rescue teams.

## **Governance**

2025 saw the team improve from some of our previous difficulties seen with governance, and we established a stable structure, including recruiting a full suite of ex-officio, elected and external trustees by year end.

The Trustees at the start of the year were four ex-officio Trustees, two elected Trustees and one external Trustee. Following an AGM at the start of the year, the Chairman of the Committee was elected, and remained consistent throughout the year. An external trustee joined the charity in June, with Carolyn leaving for personal reasons in September, and a recruitment initiative meant that we closed the year with two additional external trustees, with different backgrounds to strengthen our skillset.

At the end of the year the Trustees were as follows:

Jurgen Dissman – ex-officio as Chairman of the Committee Rachael Tate – ex-officio as vice-Chairman of Committee Dean Russell – ex-officio as Secretary of Committee Kes Taylor – ex-officio as Treasurer of Committee Simon Verspeak – elected Rich Beech – elected Nick Read – elected Jethro Kiernan - elected Abigail Fry – external Sarah Froy – external (voted in Jan 2026) Sara Williams – external (voted in Jan 2026)

The day to day running of the charity is delegated by the Trustees to the Management Committee who have worked hard on moving some of the challenges from previous years forward and are focused now on recruiting varied operational roles into the team to support with high demand.

In 2025 we also launched a set of values for the team, that sets out how we expect volunteers to operate and fulfil our obligations to the members of the public, and each other.

The Trustees and Committee engaged with a number of local politicians, and senior officers from the statutory and emergency services over the year, to try to communicate the challenges faced by this fully-voluntary charity carrying out such an important service in the area and to ask for further support – practically, financially and in educating visitors to the mountains of North Wales.

## **Finances**

In the Team’s financial year, the Team spent just over £107,000 and had an income of over £123,000, making a surplus on operating costs of over £16,000, with a year-end balance of over £604,000.

We hold a generous reserve as recommended by the charity commission. New vehicles and the possibility of a new base remain our priorities for the bulk of the reserves, and work has already started on obtaining new vehicles and investigating new premises. Further fundraising will be required when we have secured planning permission for our new premises.

Income is largely similar to the previous financial year in respect of donations (all types) with the majority of the difference apportioned to a large legacy received in the latter period. Two of our bonds matured in the last financial year meaning the Bank Interest payments are significantly larger in this time period, when compared to previous years. Sales of merchandise are reduced but compare with the outgoings spent on stock. While the margin of profit on this is small, it is a useful tool to get people talking, supporting and engaging with our social media.

With no government funding for mountain rescue teams in Wales, we continue to operate as a result of donations from the public through fundraising, merchandise sales and legacy donations, for which we are grateful.

Full details of the charity’s finances and accounts are in the Annual Financial Report, prepared and audited by Willams Denton Cyf.

## **Base and equipment**

We have secured a more favourable lease with the Church we operate from, and Trustees are exploring new premises that would allow for a more suitable base in the future. We are working through planning processes, which we expect to have completed by the end of 2026.

Equipment expenditure remains in line with previous years and we continue to be supported by local partners for kit requirements. Motor expenses have decreased by half but we expect this amount to be significantly increased during 2026, as the Trustees have agreed a plan to upgrade our vehicle fleet.

## **Moving forward**

It was a challenge for the team during 2025 to overcome some of the challenges of previous years and establish a stable operating rhythm. That has now largely been achieved, and the team will turn to ensuring there are sufficient volunteers to manage the increased demand. Call outs have increased year on year with volunteer numbers in the team remaining largely consistent, which has placed pressure on established members of the team. A recruitment drive and training program in 2026 will see a further c.25 members join, which will require effort and co-ordination from existing volunteers to be successful.

Trustees will be focused on reviewing the team's documentation, including our constitution, risk management framework and policies, along with supporting the Chair of the Committee with progressing the work to secure a new base.

With the progress made during 2025, the team feels optimistic that some of the pressure on the team with increasing call outs can be alleviated, albeit there remains a lot of work to do.

## **Thank you to all our volunteers**

The Trustees are exceptionally grateful for the time, effort and commitment of all Team members on the hill, in training and in all behind-the-scenes work, including Carolyn Samuel for all the work she put into the team during her time as an External Trustee. All Team members should be exceptionally proud of their achievements this year - every single member and volunteer contributes to the work and achievements of the Team in saving people in distress on Yr Wyddfa and the surrounding hills in some way.
