(Written April 2024) **Hope For Life** DocuSign Envelope ID: 5A80EE1E-9DD4-47A8-AB81-F125376067A2 ## **Section C Objectives and activities** _To advance the Christian faith in such parts of Asia and the world for the benefit of the public in accordance with the statements of belief appearing in the schedule by:_ - 4.1. _The training, discipling and mentoring of young adult Christians in a variety of skills that will enable them to deliver the social out-workings of Christianity and to be agents of change in their home communities and for their people (in particular, but not necessarily exclusively, the Dyak tribes of Borneo);_ - 4.2. _Providing such young people with opportunities to receive ministry into their own lives so as to receive healing and release from childhood and young adult emotional and spiritual wounds, thus enabling them to live lives of freedom and confidence in their identity in Christ;_ - 4.3. _Working to see such young people fully integrated into the local church, actively living as part of the local Body of Christ, and so preparing them to have active supportive ministries in their home communities; which will enable them to fulfil their destiny and calling from God, so that they may be a light to the world, salt to the earth, thus being more effectively able to demonstrate the personal and social out-workings of Christianity._ ## **Additional details of objectives and activities** Hope For Life was started in August 2015 by Chris Tapp whose desire was to provide a means for young adults from the Dyak tribes of Borneo to have the opportunity to grow in a relationship with God, to be discipled and mentored in the Christian Life, and to have opportunities to receive training and education at an appropriate level to give them a firm foundation onto which they could build their lives and be able to provide for their future families and give into and enhance their community. From this Hope For Life was formally inaugurated as a UK Charity on July 27[th] 2019. Hope For Life continues to support 4 students at school and 10 students at university (partially or fully). Hope For Life has provided medical care for its beneficiaries, and also for some close family members. Hope For Life has provided training meetings in the Foundations of the Christian Faith, together with many ad-hoc teaching and mentoring sessions. This year HFL arranged for 5 of our students to attend a 3 day School of Healing seminar in Jakarta, organised by Yasan Duta Pembaharuan. This seminar will take place in July 2023 and will be reported on in the next annual report. Hope For Life works closely with several local Indonesian pastors to ensure its beneficiaries receive ongoing and appropriate pastoral support as part of their commitment to church life. Chris Tapp was able to visit Indonesia in December 2022 to attend Adi & Eska’s wedding and to meet our beneficiaries to encourage them and teach in some local churches. All of the above are designed to fulfil our charitable obligations to benefit the public. ## **Future Growth** The charity continues to operate at (beyond) full capacity and is not currently in a position to support further individuals. Any future individuals that HFL may support would undergo an Application process by invitation of the trustees; would need to have been known to at least one of the trustees for at least a number of months, and be recommended by their local pastor. The trustees would consider any such applications on their merit, and in the light of sponsorship and funding available. The decision of the trustees will be absolute and binding. HFL continues to seek further volunteers who could support us in our work, and in particular anyone with accounting or secretarial (minute taking) skills. We also continue to seek support in fund raising (including approaching grant-making charities) and developing appropriate sponsorship programmes. 2 Annual Report - year end 30[th] June 2023. July sees the end of most university semesters, though not all follow exactly the same pattern and dates. Some have a longer break than others between their academic years. ## **Our full time University student:** ## **Roni David** Roni continued his Accountancy degree during the last half of 2022 and finalised his major project which was designing an accounting system for his Mum’s shop in their village. Here he proudly shows his final dissertation just after his exam, which he passed. Unfortunately due to an administrative error Roni found he had to complete one final semester in 2023, but successfully completed his degree in June 2023. After his graduation he plans to return to Kalimantan. During my visit in December Roni acted as my escort and helped with the driving of our hired car. ## **Our students for whom HFL pays university fees** : **Eska** ## **Sarik** Sarik (pictured with his sister Mira) continues to progress well with his Agrotechnology degree. These are his formal university clothes. This year he has undertaken the practical project and is writing his final dissertation. He hopes to complete his degree by August. Eska completed her Diploma in nursing in Yogya, however she has now realised that she really needs the full S1 degree. HFL are paying her course fees. She is able to complete this course on-line. ## **Silwanus** ## **Takas** when he finishes. He is also supported by Ps Mustakim, and lives with is family. She was devastated in October by the news of the sudden death of her father in the village. HFL was able to pay for her to fly back for the funeral and spend a few days with her Mum. Mira is Sarik’s sister and is studying Administration. She works really hard and supports herself by working part time in a café. HFL has paid fees his schooling this and provided books and year. uniform for part of the year whilst his family were going through a particularly difficult time. Sah Roni’s nephew boards at school and achieves very high standards, he is a leader in his year and is fully involved in many school activities and has a real love for God. Again HFL was able to bring his parents to Yogya to join in the celebrations. This is such a fantastic experience for the parents who previously had hardly left their remote village. They were able to enjoy a few days together and experience “city” life. Both Handono’s and Sah Roni’s parents were also able to spend a day at the beach – again the first time they had seen the sea! ## **WEDDINGS** **Yefta & Rachel** were married in January 2023 in Rachel’s home village **Adi & Eska** were married in December 2022 in Adi’s village **Marten & Darlin** (23[rd] June) Marten & Darlin were married in Darlin’s village. Her village is very remote. Darlin had been managing the HF café, but after the wedding she moved to Nanga Pinoh to be with Marten. They live partly in Nanga Pinoh and partly in Marten’s village where Marten is the village leader. ## **Personal Updates:** **Titus** continues to live in his grandfather’s village. He works for a Palm Oil company. He had planned to continue his studies in Bandung, but unfortunately that fell through. In May he had a motorbike accident and needed hospital treatment. HFL supported him through this, and thankfully he made a full recovery. In January he announced his engagement to Desi and they were married in June. 5 Annual Report - year end 30[th] June 2023. Bambang’s job is going well – he is manager of the JT Express parcel company branch in Anjungan. The company provided them with a place to live. Geona is growing up and is very sweet. I had a good time staying with them for 3 days in December. In January Bambang decided it was time to move on – they had been in Anjungan for 2 years and he had gained a lot of business experience. Luci’s parents used to run a café in their own village that was quite successful so Bambang & Luci decided to take it over, renovate it and live there. This enabled them to be much closer to Luci’s family – her dad was experiencing some health problems. They moved in March to set up the new café and HFL have invested in this. Bambang’s desire is that in the longer term he can support HFL from this to continue its work in Borneo. Outside their house in Anjungan as I depart. **Handono** has had a busy year. In July Nathan visited and Handono acted as his guide around Borneo. After that he returned to Yogya with his parents and Vera for the graduation ceremony. Handono’s mum has been ill during this year and HFL have been able to support with medical costs. She is now much better. He has applied for many jobs but without success, he is a strong candidate but corruption is so rife that it is almost impossible to get any decent job unless you have family or a close friend already in the company / government office who can get you in!! Graduation Ceremony Another problem has been land issues in the village. A corrupt senior leader had effectively given away all the village land to a palm oil company – Handono has been working hard, with some success, to retain their land and other land belonging to the villagers. He has also been able to buy a really good motorbike and HFL have supported with a loan to enable him to do this. He has been very faithful in making the agreed monthly repayments. In this way HFL can help provide longer term support, rather than short term fixes. Handono with his parents at the beach In January he went to Sintang to help with the café and gave some advice to Darlin and the others. Regretfully this was not fully acted upon and the cafe continued to struggle. In February we tried to get visas so he could attend the Ellel NETS course in the UK, but despite 2 attempts these were denied. After this he was able to engage in some out work with Nathan’s company and this has been a real blessing. For the last few months Handono has focussed on supporting his family and renovating the family home, and also developing his own palm tree plantation on his land. Although it has been disappointing that he has not been able to obtain full time work there is a real sense of God’s provision for him and a realistic expectation that on due course he could be elected as a senior leader within his village area. Supporting Tono on a trip to get official documents **Sah Roni** got a job in Pontianak in August. It was an admin job in a large bakery company. It was long hours, and the pay wasn’t very good. After a few months we began to encourage him to look for something better. During this time HFL continued to support hm and also arranged a loan to enable him to buy a decent motorbike. In December he met me from the airport and I was able to stay one night with him. He couldn’t travel with me because of his job but Roni David - escorted me and shared some of the driving. In April HFL began supporting his nephew for school, and also later offered support with medical costs for his cousin who had an ectopic pregnancy. He also was able to visit Titus in hospital and offer support and bring him food. Very sadly in May he was effectively forced to finish his relationship with Desi due to family cultural expectations. He would have had to travel to her home island and pay a huge bride price to be able to marry her. He was very heart broken over this, and it is a tragic reminder of how parental control is still very significant in many of the families. In June he finished his job in Pontianak and moved to Sanggau to share a koste with Handono, he also began to work for Nathan’s company. Church in Pontianak Supporting Titus in hospital **Yefta & Rachel** moved to Bali after their marriage. They had hoped to come to the UK to take part in then Ellel NETS course for 6 months from April 2023, but sadly they were denied visas. They have a - real heart for evangelism, Below you can read extracts from their April May update. **Adi & Eska** are doing well. Eska moved to live in the HFL cafe with Darlin and Keke in September 2022, but after their marriage Adi & Eska rented their own koste in Sintang. Adi works as a mechanic in a large truck garage. Eska continues to work as a nurse and also in the pharmacy as well as helping in the café whilst also continuing her S1 Nursing degree on line. She visited Pontianak 2 or 3 times for practical work. She is progressing well and should complete her S1 in December 2023. They are given to hospitality and support of their families. Eska’s niece Keke lives with them as does Takas, Adi’s nephew. This also involves supporting them for their food. Many Indonesians have a strong sense of family commitment to help each other, especially amongst the poor tribal village communities. Sarik has no family support – he supports his grandparents and sister! HFL have continued to support him to help with motorbike repairs, rent in Sintang and general living expenses throughout the year. In September he had a blood clot in his eye and HFL helped with advice and medical expenses to resolve this. **----- Start of picture text -----**

Sarik presented a plan to keep and raise chickens in his village later in the year. HFL would be interested in supporting this and asked him to put together a proper plan., at various times he was able to get temporary employment. HFL supported him to buy plant seed for this practical work for his final thesis. He finished his degree work in February and was then able to get a job harvesting palm fruits with a company near his village. He will join Sah-Roni, Roni David and the others in SOH in Jakarta in July. **----- Start of picture text -----**

The main focus of this visit was to attend Adi & Darlin’s wedding.
Transport to the village was interesting…! The road is very bad. I was
privileged to sit in the front of the truck with Eska’s father.

and we stayed in the
village for 3 days.
I was very privileged
by being offered cake
in the service – this is
an honour normally
reserved for parents.
Later I was able to meet Tono and an old
friend, Karib who I had known at LWV.
Karib now acts as a driver and support
for Tono in his Area Leader role.
We spent some time at the HFL café in
Sintang helping Darlin with the
spreadsheet accounting and giving
advice about the café.
Then we were able to visit Anjungan to spend time with Bambang and
Luci. Handono accompanied me for this part of the trip. It was great to
see Geona growing up.

This has again been a busy year for HFL with many challenges and
demands. In it all it is very encouraging to see the students grow in their
faith and life skills, as well as performing well at university. HFL is
committed to supporting them all until the end of their studies, and to help
them transition into secure jobs. We hope that they will then be in a
strong position to develop their lives, and to form strong Godly
relationships as the foundation to married and family life, whilst being
able to support and encourage their own local and wider communities.

## **Section E Financial review** At various times during the year loans have been made to the charity, which have then been partially repaid. However, at the end of June 2023 there was an outstanding debt of £11,599. HFL did not receive any grants or funding from any other charities or public bodies. HFL benefitted from Gift Aid payments of £2962, and the trustees wish to record their gratitude to those individuals who allowed us to claim the GA rebate on their gifts. HFL received (restricted) sponsorship specifically for 5 of our beneficiaries, together with additional directed sponsorship for school (as opposed to university) fees, this amounted to £7537 in total. Those that contributed in this way are welcome to contact the Treasurer to receive a full breakdown of how their sponsorship was used. ## **Section F Other information** Hope For Life continues to seek support from churches or other organisations sympathetic to its aims.
